Have recently bought an Aspire 4520 with amd Athlon X2 ,160 gb HD , i GB RAM , running on XP .

Have some basic ( & probably stupid ) questions.

    1. Hard disk is making a click click noise, when ever it is accessed. Started after 3 days of purchase . There is no effect on functionality as of now.Is it normal or do I have a lemon?

    2. The touch pad & areas around it become quite warm , under normal usage. Is it something to be worried about?

    3. AMDs cool & Quiet program is supposed to be part of XP. I can see that it is working if "minimal power management " is selected under power scheme. Is this responsible for the warm touch pad ?

Thanks in advance for all the help.

    1. loud clicking is NOT NORMAL.. and be a sign of problems to come

    2. NORMALLY .. the HDD is under one palm and RAM may be under the other. and heat rises!

    3. the warm touchpad is due to the heat generated by the HDD and RAM as well as other heat circulating around inside.

    Thanks Big O.

That means either the harddisk or the unit itself has to be exchanged.

    my bad luck continues :(

hope it is not a trailer of things to come

    Think positive . :)

The hard disk problems , could be happen even by bad transport or handling.

Even if you get a new one , you have to babysit the laptop all the time , as we all do. :D

try to test the replacement out if you are returning it to a retail store.

like Kiriakost (sorry mis-spelled your name) said, the damage could be due to rough or bad handling or shipping.. test the new one before leaving the store if possible,,

and treat it like a lady you love, or at least be gentle

Thanks. Acer is replacing the hard disk in their service centre.

will certainly handle with care..but me thinks the damage had happened before it reached me..as I am sure I did not abuse the machine

hopefully you will have great results from the service center,, i know that they have been good to me... but i have not needed to send a PC back to them... a HDD went bad in one that was brought to me for work, and they sent me an ADVANCED REPLACEMENT, but did put a hold on my credit card until i shipped the old drive back....

Thier first level techs are nothing more than call-center robots reading from scripts,,, but they did forward me higher up and we got everything fixed within 3 days.
