I just recieved my Acer Aspire 4820TG, and it is meant to have a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics card, but in diaxdiag it says this:

I tried using device manager to update the driver but it just says that the drivers are up to date for my Standard VGA Graphics Adaptor.

Can anyone help with this? I'm clueless with laptops. :/

By default, the ati video card is turned off when it's running on battery to save power. Either plug it back in, or right click on the desktop and select "switchable graphics" to select the faster video. It does make the battery drain much faster, though.

Thanks very much for the reply, I turned off the laptop, removed the battery, and started it up again, but it's still showing my graphics card as the VGA adapter. How do I access switchable graphics? Right clicking on the desktop doesn't seem to offer an option. :/

Right clicking on the desktop should provide an option of "configure switchable graphics" - if it isn't something is wrong. It should be there whether you're running plugged in or on battery. Did you install a fresh copy of windows 7, or install a new display driver? The fact that it's identified as a "standard vga graphics adapter doesn't sound correct for how acer ships the laptop, but how you got to that point will decide how you'll need to get back working.

I haven't installed either to my knowledge, this is just how the laptop arrived yesterday. When I right click on the desktop I get the options:
    View
    Sort By
    Refresh
    Paste
    Paste Shortcut
    Screen Resolution
    Gadgets
    Personalize

Try installing all the new drivers from Acer's homepage, seems like the graphics drivers haven't been installed.

I spent most of this morning on the line to tech support, it seems my Acer was shipped with the wrong drivers. I did some re-setup thing following their instructions and started being told I had intel drivers instead of ATI, and also it lacked programs it should've been shipped with, so they're replacing the laptop. I hope this isn't a batch issue, I'll have to think twice before going for Acer in future.

So you didnt tried to install VGA drivers for Ati, available on the website?
Whats the point to replace the whole laptop for a bunch of wrong drivers?

I did try to, it kept ignoring them and saying the one's currently installed (for the wrong card) were correct, then became convinced it was an Intel card. Very weird. No matter what I did it just kept saying it was a different card to what it should be, so I don't really have a choice but to replace it. I was told on the phone it was likely a hardware problem.

Thanks all for your help...I'll hopefully not need to come back with my replacement though! :p

Have you tried to restore it to factory settings from the recovery partition (F10)? How is your bios set?

Yeah, that's what I was told to do over the phone. I went from being told my card was a standard VGA to it saying it was Intel, at that point the technician said there was definitely something wrong and they'll replace it.
No idea what bios means, but I've packed the laptop away now ready for collection.
