I have an Acer Aspire 5002WLMi and I have an odd problem regarding its upper case.

Whenever I close the laptop and put it in my bag and travel with it, the case gets damaged during transit. I open it up and I see these long scratches on the sides and across the upper case. I was wondering if anyone has had this kind of problem with any of their Acer laptops. I think that this problem may be a design flaw.

I included a picture to show what I am talking about:

Red indicates the part causing damage.
    Blue indicates the damaged/scratched part.

Very interesting. I am going to try and explain and I hope it doesn't sound too confusing...

What I would do to check is close the laptop and hold it up to bright light. Then look "through" the lappie from the sides so that you see the areas where the display and laptop body meet. There should be a visible clearance except where the rubber/synthetic spacers are. If you can see what I am talking about and the clearance is there great. No design flaw.

Next, gently put pressure (or squeeze) the sides of the lappie even more closed whilst still checking the clearance "through" the sides of the lappie.

If you find that the clearance is gone and the display and laptop body plastic are meeting you have your answer...

You are subjecting the lappie to too much pressure when you pack it in your bag and forcing the display and body halves to meet and chaff against each other when travelling.

Thats all I can think of. Hope it helps..... :)

But even when I put it in a messenger bag I get this problem too. I've seen this in other Aspire models that use this chassis. I've always thought of it as a design flaw.

The only thing then is that the chassis is flexing too much when the laptop is closed and being transported. If so, then it is a design flaw.

It might be a design flaw but it is common in many laptops. Whenever you put it in your bag and take it with you the stress causes the lid and the chassis to strike each other as explained above. An easy fix is to use a soft cloth or sheet inbetween the lid and the chassis, this should take care of any cosmetic damage that might occur to your laptop during transit.

My friend has a TravelMate and he doesn't have such problems. In fact only the Aspire 5000 chassis (and similar ones) seem to have this problem.

I don't like having to use a small cloth, can't seem to find a thin enough one. So I used exam-paper sized paper, but not enough, it moved around during transit and now I have a scratch from the LCD bezel on my upper case. I'll just get Acer to replace the case...again!

I was wondering where can I get that protective cover that comes with the new upper case from the repair depot. Cause every time I had my upper case replaced, it always came with an adhesive protective cover, but it never stayed due to the amount of heat on the unit. Where can I get this protective film?
