Hi. I have an Acer Aspire 5000 which is acting up, if I boot the machine with the battery inserted it will load xp but the keyboard and touchpad do not respond and the machine cannot be turned off by the power button (so you have to pull the battery  ).

The only way the machine will function normally is running on the AC power adaptor with the battery removed.

Is this a known battery fault (therefore remedied by replacing the battery) or is it a fault on the power board ?

I have not encountered this fault before so any ideas would be most welcome.
    Many thanks.

If you insert the battery whilst the machine is already booted up the keyboard, touchpad and power button do not work anymore. Because of this I cannot be certain if it is just these things which are affected or if the machine is frozen up, however if you then remove the battery (machine still booted up and running under AC adaptor power) and wait some seconds for the green battery light on the front of the machine to go out, these devices will work again without rebooting.

Thanks for your replies. I just wish there was a way to test the battery before I spend £50 on a new one :(

Does anyone else have an opinion on this issue ?
Would there be any other symptoms I am missing regarding a fault on the power side of the mobo ?
