hi, i have bought a aspire 5100 for like 6 months already and when i bought this laptop, it says i can register for the "FREE UPGRADE TO WINDOW VISTA" program. I registered for the program, and they sent me a WINDOW VISTA HOME PREMIUM disc pretty fast, but i'm really upset with the Window Vista's performance. One of my friends, he has the same laptop as me, but he jux recently bought it with Window Vista pre-installed, he can play some games that my computer doesn't even allow me to play? I just want to ask you guys "the professionals of computers", is there any way my computer can go back into Window XP MEDIA CENTER EDITION, i tried to press ALT + F10, it would't work anymore..... can someone plaease help me???? :(

    thanks...

Did you create the restore DVDs when you first turned on your notebook with XP MCE? If so use those and forget about alt+f10...

Also on the game issue how much ram does your friend have when compared to you, remember all 5100 series are not alike some come with more memory than others. Vista is a memory hog and maybe all you need to make your games playable is more memory (don't expect it to work with 512mb of ram!). You will need at least 2Gb to be comfortable gaming in vista these days...

Whenever you bought the laptop, a XP serial key should be included either on the bottom of your computer, or on a manual [or the sort]. Call up Acer and tell them your problems, and they'll probably send you XP disks. You will have supply your XP key.

Whenever I lost my disks, I called up HP (I know, this is Acer, but I'm just saying), and I just gave a key, and they said "Ok, we'll send the disks out to you." A few business days pass by, and I have my disks arrive in the mail. :)

If you have the restore discs then put disc 1 into the notebook's dvd drive and then reset it. Once it reboots it will boot ( disc 1 is bootable) to Erecovery console and then just follow the instructions, it will ask you for disc 2 when it needs it.

Just a warning the DVDs will take about approx. 1hr and 10mins to recovery windows as they are not as fast as the hard drive image which only takes about 10mins.

    Hope this helps you...

Go into the Bios and make sure that the DVD drive is first on the boot list and the hard drive is below it, that will make sure that when you put in disc 1 it will boot to the recovery console and not go back into windows (make sure it is disc 1 and not 2 as disc 2 is not bootable) :)

What you described sounds like that disc maybe damaged in someway. Are you sure your ALT+F10 does not work as well, try pressing that at the POST screen (the first screen you see when you turn on the PC). If alt+f10 is still working, e-recovery will start and then select your language from the prompt, then it will start the recovery process. Outside of this you may not have any choice but to go back to the vista upgrade that acer sent you.
