Anyone try Win 7 on Aspire 5100? Would be nice to have Win 7 w/ 64bit on 4gb of ram. Get mine in the mail tomorrow.

Shockingly, Acer's website does not have 64-bit Vista/7 drivers for the Aspire 5100!
The 5100 is certainly capable of Windows Vista, and therefore Windows 7, but the total dearth of 64-bit drivers is stunning.

The notebook most likely over 3 years old, many units of this age do not have Win 7 drivers, but for the most part it's not all that crucial.. I'm sure with a little work you'd get it up and running fine.

That's what I thought since it's Vista capable. I'll try it when I get it and see what issue I'll encounter maybe none. Even thought it's old, it can handle up to 4gb of ram is what I like.

Keep in mind that Vista drivers do work in Windows 7 - this isn't like the XP-to-Vista transition when whole new drivers were needed.
The stupid thing is, on a 64-bit capable notebook, the website doesn't list ANY 64-bit drivers!

Just do some googling on the devices in the laptop.
While you may not find all the device driver on 1 page, I am certain there are spare 64bit drivers for the devices.
Other laptops supporting Windows 7 64bit could have reused device such as modems and audio chips + wireless driver.
Need more work but can be done.

Ok, got my 5100 up and running. Only thing missing was the PCI Flash Memory driver. Wierd how the other Memory were installed, like the SD. Download memory card reader from Acer Support site fixed it. Supprised how it ran with only 1gb, and that's with pc4200 instead of the pc5300. Drive is also 5400. I have order pc5300 and 7200 HD for my other Lappy.

I've worked/seen 4 Acer, it seems their speakers are sux. 5520,5517,5532 and now the 5100.

Trust me, their speakers got better with the 6920G and later.
