I have an Acer Aspire 5101 that keeps displaying the following error on POST:

    TOSHIBA`MK4p2vGAX` ` ` ` ` ` ` `

    ERROR
    0200: Failure Fixed Disk 02

Notice the corruption with HDD ID string?

If I replace the HDD with another drive I get the same 'corruption' (although obviously with a different HDD Make/Model ID)

The HDD's I've used test perfectly well on other systems

I've also replaced the memory that was installed for different ones and also ran the memory modules singular instead of in pairs and again the memory that was originally fitted works OK in other systems.

I've even upgraded the BIOS from 2.40 through to 3.10

    Any idea?

This is a common fault, the southbridge chip on the mainboard has failed and isn't detecting the hard drive correctly, i would also imagine that the dvd drive isn't being picked up at all either.
If the unit is still under warranty send it in to be repaired. If not you can always pay Acer to fit a new one however the price will be quite steep.

Yup, your right, the DVD drive isn't picked up as well.

Many thanks for your answer, I thought I would be looking at a new motherboard.

Thanks for confirming the problem Hairy_Lee

The same thing is happening to my Aspire 5101 too, only it says
    ERROR
    0200 failure fixed disk 0

My hard drive works fine on a different system
It is preceded by 2 beeps in quick succession on start up.

Can anyone tell me if this is the same problem as listed by RigsVille, above?

Unfortunately, mine isn't under warranty any more either!

    thanks!
