Hi, my acer aspire, 5102 freezes and can only be restartted by powering down by holding the power button, but it only freezes when it is running from the battery? when it is plugged into the mains it works fine with no problems at all. but when i remove the mains lead after a minute ot two it will freeze and have to be restarted? the laptop is only about 6 months old, but i have had it into a computer shop as it was stalling before but when it stalled before it was stalling on a stripy screen. now it just seems to be stalling, and occasionlly on a stripy screen. please can anyone help?

    Regards

Do you have the latest bios and video drivers from acer for the 5100 series? If you do and they don't solve the problem then to me it sounds like a hardware fault somewhere, you might have to contact acer support (e-mail) and describe the problem to them and see what they say.
You said your notebook is only 6months old which means it is still under warranty therefore any problems hardware wise should be fixed.

Got exactly the same problem with my 5100 series running Vista Premium.

Initially thought it was cos i'd disabled superfetch but reinstated that and problem still occurred.

Only happens on battery power on internet (use Firefox on mine). Found it happens if you use any power profile other than High Performance even if the battery settings on Power Saver are the same. So I set my Power Saver settings on the High Performance profile and dont think it happens now.

    Not yet running latest BIOS.

In any case you can rule out the power adaptor... after all the fault happens when it ISNT connected ffs !!!!!!!!!!!

If I find the cure first I'll post it

I'm sort of convinced its something to do with the ACER empowering technology package but havent removed it yet to confirm this, certainly there are funnies that happen when you let it loose on the system, It just seems like a bit of unnecessary branding and bloatware...... does it add ANY value, or is it just a liability?

As I said before, with the power settings set to Max performance it seems fine on battery, even with economy settings within the Max profile.

tried it and found the answer :)
the first thing i did was open task manager.the i started to use media player with the vis on and it showed CPU 100% and it froze.turned to max power after restart and all was ok.i then removed empowering tech. went back on bat,did the same as before and no freezing but battery time went down.
im running XP pro on an Aspire7110.

    hope that helped :)

Thanks Hoggie, nice to know the Acer app is flakey on XP Pro a well as Vista....
I expect you could get the batt life back up by tweaking the power management settings on the Max profile!!

    Are you using wired internet?

I remember the first time I plugged my laptop to my wired internet, it was running on batteries too and froze. After I rebooted I reinstalled the Network card drivers and that fixed the problem.

You can do that by entering in the Device Manager in My Computer.
