I have a problem where my Laptop once switch on doesn't boot at all the lights are on but just a black screen. Later on that black screen turns to a gray screen but nothing happens.

If I switch it off it'll run fine but will do a registry check and then the next time I'll have to do the same thing over again.

From the awkward description (no offense, I'm just not clear on what you're trying to say), it sounds like the laptop is failing to initialize the graphics card in certain cases when you try to boot. Have you tried updating your video drivers?

I have solved the problem and what an embarrassing one it was too.

Using Tune-Up 2007 I had removed a lot of Acer Crap they have starting up but also must have stopped the ATI Catalyst Control Centre.

    Scrap that!

I just put my Laptop back on without the main power plugged in and it's happend again.

I'll see if updating the Graphics card helps and it should if your correct about the laptop failing to initialize the graphics card.

Update the drivers but don't install Catalyst Control Center. I find that CCC breaks things more often than not. Good luck! :)

It's a nightmare trying to install the updated ATI Radeon X1300 driver.

I get this error "Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system. Setup will not exit."

You've downloaded the desktop version of the Catalyst. Go to the Gaming subsection and look in the thread called Updating Mobile Graphics Drivers. You need to use the download link there because ATI's website will make you download a verification utility that Acer won't pass as it's not a supported OEM.

The problem has been solved with the driver being updated.

The AMD/ATI driver page wasn't too clear that there were two versions. This is my first laptop and never new there were Desktop and Laptop versions.

I found the link in the gaming section

Thanks for your time and information Zoomastigophora it really has been appreciated.

Bad news I'm afraid after thinking it was solved.

I just switched it on without the main power being on and just running off the battery and the old problem is back. I haven't touched it since updating the graphics card driver :(

It's the same old switched on normal XP sounds playing but no response from the screen...
