    Greetings,

I would like to update my Acer Aspire 5315's BIOS to the latest version to solve a fan issue when running in Ubuntu (dual boot with Vista). Can someone run me through the correct procedure? Thanks in advance.

Bringin' it up. Really curious about doing this, the overheating problems suck.

Is there any other way to resolve your overheating problem? like cleaning the heatsink fan(blowing with compressed air),applying AS5 or something.
I'm suggesting these to avoid BIOS update as it has an outside chance of bricking your laptop.
If you are confident enough, prepare yourself with recovery methods used in this forums like this:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/284686-aspire-5315-bios-recovery-using-usb-thumbdrive.html
create a recovery USB stick or a CD.( This is only a pre-caution for the unpredictable disaster)

Now for the real task in hand.
I prefer to use windows utility provided by Acer but some prefer DOS method but both can fail so the choice is yours.
Download the correct BIOS from Acer site.
Unzip and copy the .exe file to your desktop.or you can download the BIOS to your desktop and extract in desktop.
    disconnect all USB devices(printer)
disable your AV program, disable all background services(mainly screensaver).
close all opened programs, disconnect the Internet(USB connection),disable wireless connection, leave the battery, mains connected(hope and pray you will not have any power cut during that short period of flashing)
Right click the extracted .exe file and run as admin and do not interrupt the flashing(even if the screen is blank and appears to be nothing happening)
I hope I've covered almost everything and Good luck, let us know how you got on.

ellalan, Thanks for posting the Bios flash instructions.
I want to flash my Aspire 5315 with the latest bios I found on the Acer site, v1.45 but I don't have an windows OS on the hard drive. Can I use a DOS boot CD with the BIOS_v1.45.exe file? Do I need any other files on the CD like a flash loader program?

ellalan, Thanks for the quick reply. I was able to make a boot cd with the BIOS_v1.45.exe file on it. I renamed the file BIOS_v45.exe before adding it to the cd. My Aspire 5315 booted into dos and I was able to operate all the normal dos functions but I was unable to run the BIOS_v45.exe file. Dos reported file not found. On my win7 box I was able to see the file on the cd.
Could it be the BIOS_v1.45.exe file will only run in a windows environment?

I'm sorry, you have to wait for someone experienced to chime in.

    Update:
I installed win7 pro 64 on my Aspire 5315 without any problems and ran the BIOS_v1.45.exe file with success!
The BIOS_v1.45.exe file will only run in a windows environment. This file contains a loader app as well as the actual BIOS update. Apparently all the BIOS files on the ACER site (USA) are combo loader and BIOS programs made only for the windows environment.

This is valid for your model. The Bios update package for my 1810TZ contains versions for DOS, Win32 and Win64.

Perhaps something like BartPE is useful for you instead of installing Windows only to update the Bios
