i have upgraded my CPU to the T5450 or any socketP UP TO the T7500 CPU should work fine... 2 users have reported back to me on the success of his T7500 upgrade... the CPU will work and the GM965chipset will support the 800Mhz FSB... SO GO BIG OR GO CHEAP is my advice,, each has it's pro's and con's
on the 5315, a cpu upgrade is very easy..
1. unplug power, remove battery,, and press power button to drain any residual power held by capasitors.
2. remove 4 screws (one at a time) from the bottom access pannel (large funny shaped pannel w/ circular fan hole).
3. w/ screws removed use small screwdriver to help prise the pannel up, (it takes some force to remove the pannel, just go slow and steady).
4. after pannel removal, locate the FAN.. remove the 3 screws from the fan, unplug fan power cable, then remove the fan.
5. now unscrew the 4 screws from above the CPU (they have springs between the screw heads and the cpu heatsink.
6. now w/ screws removed, lift the heatsink up off the CPU and remove the heat-sink assembly... it goes all the way to the fins that are in back of the fan...
7. with the heatsink assembly removed, you should see the CPU... socket color is not an issue and no modification is needed... sorry for any confusion
8. turn the screw at the top of the cpu socket. that should release the pressure on the CPU,, and now you should be able to lift the CPU out of the scoket.
9. place the new cpu in the socket, MAKE SURE IT IS FRIMLY SEATED w/ no gap between pins cpu and socket... then turn screw back to lock CPU in place..
10. re assemble the rest of the components in reverse order to re assemble.. (heatsink assembly, (screw it back in,, fan assembly- screw it back and hook up power,, replace back cover and replace screws.)
that should do it for you...
before doing all of this make sure you have updated your bios version to atleast version 1.31,, i'm using 1.43 w/ no problems,,
currently version 1.34 has caused sporadic COOL BOOT problems on certain machines,,,ver 1.42 had some issues with NETWORK not resuming after pc comes out of hibernate... Many BIOS versions can be forund at support.acer-euro.com READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND THEN run the flasher of your choice (windows flash,,, or DOS which requires you to make a bootable CD w/ flash files on it)

i personally have flashed my 5315 BIOS's (3 pcs) a total of over 50 times with no problems using WINFLASH
but on 7-25-08 i did get report of WINFLASH hanging durring verification step, when user killed all power it also killed his BIOS and maybe MORE... ( lesson::: DO NOT REMOVE AC & BATTERY while PC is powered up, even if it seems locked up)Attached Files:

Hi bigozone - I have searched threads and can't find any that describe the mods to make to CPU to fit a grey socket on an Acer Aspire 4315. I have a GM965 chipset and have upgraded the bios to the most recent version in readiness.
I have an upgrade CPU on the way and took my laptop apart to check and I might have known a grey socket!!!! You seem to be the person who knows about this - can you let me have the information please? I'm new here and hope this is the correct method of contact. I have set my account so I can receive emails from others so I hope this works. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. -

congrats on success and knowledge gained

-
ok am a bit lost for words now as i just did one that well i did think would need a *mod* but did not hmm just worked right away
no mod and it was a light grey/cream
very strange indeed

just find it strange that i did not have to mod it for pins to fit in this as it just fited ah well they mite be useing difrent stock now or i mite of been drunk when i did the first 5 lol and they did not need to be fixed befor i got them
sc00terx -
hi, thanx been building/modding pc's since 87 so not reaaly new to the scene lol.
could u post some pics of the socket that didnt need modifying and also describe how to modify the socket if it needs it and ill be happy to publish a full step by step guide. in the next few days (once iv upgraded this and a friends).
thanx -

thanx bigozone.

later,
bigO -
thanks
just because it was not the same as the pink/pur one i did think it would need a mod like the rest of them have had but saved me some work
sc00terx -
next challenge is iv heard poeple installing 4gb ram again cant see why this isnt doable, but can anyone tell me if its been done before i start hassling my local parts supplier. thanx
-
XP and VISTA 32 bit can only address about 3gigs of memory,,, you might get 4gigs to boot and work,,, just know up front that you will never be able to access all 4 gigs,,,, and some Acers have reported not booting w/ 2X 2gig
but work fine w/ 3 gigs
later,
bigO -
iv got vista premium 64bit installed. at least the os wont be a limiter in terms of using 4 gb's and ill need to check but im sure i'v seen a few other i965 based laptops come equiped with 4gb's standard however as u say this may be an acer problem only accepting 2x1gb dimms
-

----------------------------------------------------------------
So are you talking only 5315's or all acers ?
Pardon my ignorance, was thinking of using one 2 gig stick and one stock 512mb chip. Will it work that way in a 5315 ?
Thanks, James -
that config should work fine,,,
but some models of acers fail to boot w/ 4 gigs of ram.. even though they claim to support it -
I upgraded to a T5450 a few days ago. I was getting Idle temps under 20C now i cant get below 45C. I havent changed anything besides bios version. Any ideas on why this is? I flashed down to the 1.33 Bios because i was having the cold boot problem. Could this be related?
EDIT
I just flashed back to 1.34 and RMClock is now reporting temps of 26.6C on startup - 3 mins ago before i flashed it was reporting 50C on startup and idle. Any take? -
BIOS 1.34 has those 2 issues
COLD BOOT ISSUES
and
Thermal sensors are mis-read by the BIOS
the temps are the same... just being correctly reported now!!
good to see you are awake! -
Yes I am awake - barely
So 1.33 reports temps correctly or does 1.34 -
1.33 report correctly. With 1.34 sometimes I get 13ºC which is impossible
http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=18718&d=1211166108
Hi BigO can't sleep, so won't sleep -
who needs sleep
BTW 13c,, maybe you just installed an airconditioner too!!! -
so what is your average temp then BigO
-
T2370 before bios upgrade - 45-50ºC 0.950V
-
also at 0.950v using RMclock -
enjoy the PIC and i have more i can email....
yes... 500th post
later,
bigO -
Congrats BigO
Right behind you
-
I downgraded back to 1.33 ran orthos with .950v undervolt for an hour and my peak temp was 57C. I am averaging 46-50C with Google earth opened and 3 tabs in firefox
-
Yep, these are credible temps.
-
-
not at all...before i was hitting close to 60C in vista running firefox and that thing was burning my lap. the only physical part of the laptop that is actually warm to the touch is ... near the power plug/battery for obvious reasons, right under the CPU -- WARM not HOT and there is a spot under my left palm as i type that is pretty warm.
-
can't recall if you had a 5315,, if so these are the parts that you feel
EDIT: cant read sigs either LOL
under the left palm is the RAM...
next to the powerplug is the the FAN exhaust (piping the heat from CPU)
the CPU is actually almost centered around the F & G keys (bottom of laptop is warm there)
just take the fan and heatsink out regularly to keep the FINS infront of the fan clean and un obstructed -
HI
just did another one and its running real cool you can tell from befor so much
puting xp on this now and useing sp2 then will update when all the drivers are on and working
then put sp3 on
oh and congrats BIG 0 on ya post count mile stone500 and counting
sc00terx -
thanks scooterx,, and congrats on your continued upgrade successes
later,

mine used to stay at 11c while browsing.. an obvious BIOS problem,,, plus 1.33 doesn't have the COLD BOOT issue -
OK I just got my ebay T5450 installed in my 5315 and it works perfect.
Put in 2 GB of RAM and a 320GB HD too.
About $200 AUD all up and it goes great.
Just want to say thanks to Big O couldn't and wouldn't have done it without your PM advice and this guide.
Next step is overclocking, is it even possible?
Never had a laptop before, my desktop BIOS makes O'Clocking easy but there are no options in this one (1.33). -
i'm very happy all worked out for you so wonderfully...
as far as overclocking goes,, i think its over-rated as far as laptops go...
there are a few software options out there which attempt to overclock by changing the FBS speeds a wee bit at a time,,, but i honestly don't see you getting much benifit from the process,,,
you do much better by waiting till the T8100 or T8300 are a bit cheaper and then making another step UP...
now for a few???'s i'm trying to gather a bit of data about 5315's w/ grey sockets...
did you have the PINK CPU SOCKET??
which OS are you running??
later,
bigO -
Good point, I'll forget O'clocking this, I've just had such success with my desktop that I was curious. This runs amazing now anyway. It was unusable stock with Vista.
T81/8300 will be a goer if they drop below $100, if I find one on ebay one day. Have they been confirmed to work?
Conveniently, the socket was pink. I used some Arctic silver 5, CPU is currently at 40 degrees C under light load (surfing only) in a warm room (high 20's). In my experience with AS5 that will drop by 3-5 degrees within a month of daily cycling on/off.
I now use XPP, SP2. That soulpass guide you linked here somewhere was a lifesaver too, all worked perfect.
I bet this thread has/gets a lot of hits, from non-forum members.
Thanks again. -
we got lucky since our mainboard the ACADIA is the basis for the aspire 5710 5715 5720,, and the 7720s and maybe the 7710's
so our BIOS has SUPPRORT for MUCH higher CPUs built into it
