that's one heck of an upgrade for a 3680.... congrats..

but i will get to it soon
for now 5720 and 7720 asipres my be easy swaps since the MBs in those are also ACADIA2 based.. but they do have extra buttons and more ports!
just start looking for pics of those model latop exterior (sides and front edges especially) since those are the most likely to fit w/ little to no mods needed -
Just upgraded my 4315 successfully!!!! Replaced my Celeron 530 with a Core 2 Duo T5750! I videotaped it, but not very well. I'll use Sony Vegas to patch it up and upload it to my YouTube channel.

Could this be of interest?

GM965 Crestline 82965GM (GMCH) Core 2 Duo, Celeron M 533 / 800 MHz DDR2 533 / 667 4GB
the yellow might explain y it reads it as 965 after upgrade, does the red mean that my laptop that reads GM965 stock can handle 4gb of ram? -
If its the 5315, then its got the GL960. Open up, and read the code printed on the chipset.
-
if you are showing us data on the chipsets,, believe me that part is understood but still controversial -
http://powertoolbattery.org/acer-aspire-5315-motherboard-mbald02001-p-6800.html
if a 5720 can take a 5315 motherboard surely it could do the other way round?
and accoring to the 5720 motherboard listed on thier website it can -

maybe a bit of time spent with the mobo codes and the parts site may answer a lot of questions on mobo swaps

if you don't have VISTA x64 you will get BLUESCREEN errors as soon as you boot w/ 4gigs and there is no way around it....
until someone running VISTA X64 bit reports of success i'm holding off on saying it will or won't work with 4gigs
but 3gigs work just fine.... the 2gig stick goes on the outside!!! -
I am planning to get the 5315, with a CarPhone Warehouse Broadband Deal..
-
and all the other reasons to love these cheap little laptops! -
Yeah, I am really looking fwd to it. And when I get it, I'll help you solve the 4GB and Vista x64 issue..
(Anyone played GTA San Andreas on the 5315 ? Graphics on High ?) -
dream on.... it lags on HALO,, but not bad...
-
Oh well, it'll be cheap. I don't give a SH|T about the warranty. I'll try and fit in another mobo or something, or external GPU.
Anywayz, I haven't bought it as yet. -
if you can get a 5720G mb and install it
then you should be able to play what ever on low anyway -
i'm not sure about high graphic cause i played the game like 6 months ago.... -
-
im playing gta san andreas now on my laptop, it lags a fair bit in low settings when im in the citys, but that might be becuase my hard drives are almost full, lots of crap for school and from acer.
-
computer specs its "meant to be" acording to all the markings i can see without opening it up on say its an X3100 not specific chipset. -
-
i think i'm gonna reload windows when my card arrives,,, i just dread backing up all my stuff.... on second thought, i'm gonna re-install my 80G hitachi HDD... the Toshiba that acer sent as a replacement for a different system is definatley not up to the Hitachi's specs. -

I'm having troubles installing XP Professional SP2.
I have installed a brand new 320 gb HDD.
I have burned my boot CD-R following the instructions on the link to the Soulpass site.
After my laptop has booted up the files from the CD-R, I insert the Windows XP disc as the laptop requests, and I then get the message that "Set up can't read the CD".
The trouble shooting guide says to contact Microsoft for a replacement CD. I have done this, and Microsoft will replace it, but for a hefty fee (f*ck you, Bill Gates!!!).
I know that both my laptop and Desktop can read the XP instal disc for the purpose of creating the CD-R boot disc as per Soulpass instructions.
As an experiment, I loaded the XP instal disc into my desktop running Vista, and it went through the motions of being prepared to install XP, but warned me against it as I was using Vista, and would lose my files.
Because of the above, I suspect there is nothing wrong with the XP disc, and don't really want to pay the fee for a replacement disc from Microsoft only to have the same problem with the replacement.
Anyone agree or disagree with this?
Any ideas as to what else I can try?
Thanks. -
not really for this thread, but anyway, did you create a NEW xp install disk with the drivers on it? you need to basically make a clone xp disk, with the new drivers added to it. i have done it and it works no probs at all...you shouldn't have to put the genuine xp cd anywhere near the laptop, hide it away in a safe place, lol
-
Or, instead of customizing the XP disc, you can run the HDD in compatibility mode (IDE mode), and install XP using the non-customized disc. Later on, you can manually install the AHCI drivers in device manager, reboot, turn on AHCI in the BIOS, and XP will load fine. I normally prefer this method.

Thanks Andy, thanks bodes, I will try one of these two methods tonight and report back.
-
now it is a lot easier to switch from IDE to AHCI.... too bad this aspire 4530 isn't that easy.... it's driving me batty.... even in IDE mode i still get stop codes...
-
^ Why whats wrong with it ? Is it your's ??
-
no i have an ASPIRE 4530 that someone sent to me for an XP DOWNGRADE..
i forsaw no problems as ACER has all XP drivers on thier tech site,, but i have been fighting this thing for over 2 weeks...
i've even found a site on the web where they talk of loading XP on this model... but every time i try to install XP i get BSOD errors...
i'll send you a link to a thread i started... and have tried everything and would pull my hair out if i hadn't just got a very short hair cut!! -

I guess it probably is a faulty disc. I can't believe the attitude of Microsoft - this was a new item, still sealed and genuine. They are going to charge me for replacing a faulty item. Sadly, I bought this privately on ebay, so can't make much of an issue of it. -
I've successfully upgraded my 5135 from a Celeron 530 to a Core 2 Duo 5450. I also increased the RAM to 2GB, and the machine is noticeably faster now. It's nice having a second CPU to prevent the system from bogging down.
-
congrats Nighthaek Foo..... give it about 3 months and you'll be wanting a T8300
i know i did, and still do.... but i'm waiting for prices to drop some more. -
i have successfully upgraded a 5715 to xp . buttons for volume up/down dont work . i belieave an application named launch manager is needed . as far as i know only vista compatible software is available . can anyone enlightem me .
thanks -

It's a toss up now between buying a full version of XP (doesn't have to be pro - I have the upgrade!!), or giving up, and getting Norton Ghost and running Vista. -
1) first of all it seems your laptop CD-Drive is having a problem reading your burned Nlite install CD.... is that correct?
2) is the laptop having trouble reading the original XP source as well?? or is the reading trouble ONLY with the XP source (keeping you from making the nlite disk?
now for possible SOLUTIONS...
3) the nlite CD can be created on any PC that will run NLITE.... i've made an nlite disk on a VISTA system.... just follow the nlite prompts to insert the XP original DISK when asked for a source point it to the CD drive....
(it'll copy the disk to a TEMP directory)
4) if your laptop is having trouble reading CDs,,, you can try burning as SLOW as possible... or instead of doing a DIRECT BURN.... create an ISO IMAGE... and then use a different BURNING SOFTWARE to burn the ISO you just created to a CD....
5) if cds are causing you problems.... burn the ISO to a DVD... or do a DIRECT BURN to a DVD (if NLITE will burn to DVDs, i've not tried that one yet)
6) the upgrade will work JUST LIKE FULL INSTALL as far as NLITE is concerned.... just make sure you have a win98 CD at hand when doing the install,,, because the upgrade version will ask you to place it in the drive so it can validate the fact that you are eligable for an UPGARDE!!
sorry it's taken me so long to get you a detailed answer.... i've been fighting my own XP and NLITE devil//gremlin..... still fighting it..... but i finally got XP installed thru IDE MODE!!! (it's a start) -
try the VISTA version that is available for download at
support.acer-euro.com
click on downloads, choose notebooks, then choose your make and model,,
the launch manager should be under SOFTWARE -

Thanks for taking the effort to provide such a detailed reply.
1) yes
2) yes
3) I tried that, no luck.
4) I haven't tried that.
5) I tried burning to a dvd, no luck
6) I'm pretty sure this is the problem. I didn't realise I had bought only the upgrade, and I didn't have an earlier version of windows.
I've now ordered a full version of XP Pro, which will hopefully fix the issue.

Just upgraded my 5315-2153 from the Celeron M 530 to a Core 2 Duo T5470 and it's a real night and day difference. High-def content is no problem and opening iTunes is no longer an issue (it takes several minutes to load up). Not bad for $65 on eBay and 20 minutes of my time.
-
and i bet you are loving that CPU... it has an 800Mhz FSB doesn't it?
wish i had 800FSB.... but i will soon enough
ADD SOME RAM if you only have the 1 gig stock.... and if you want even move speed.... check out the SOULPASS link in the FIRST POST.... it tells you how to load XP on the 5315!!!
i'll not have VISTA back on my laptop -
Come check out the Acer Aspire 4315 lounge! Only for people who actually own an Aspire 4315.

First of all would like to thank BigO for the help he gave me and continues to give to the forum
Having put Windows XP into my 5315 (with some rare crashes) everything is much much smoother compared to the stock Vista Basic (and bloatware included), but i'm having a problem when it comes to the power saving, for some reason it inst working like it should for a quite a while already.
For instance if I put or setup a profile that goes into "suspend mode" after 35min, hibernation at 50min, etc nothing of that happens...
any idea what could be causing this? -
Sorry for Hijacking, But has anyone installed DDR2-800 PC2-6400 Memory in their Aspire 5315 or similar....????

Bigo,
You mentioned earlier about posting a zip-file w/ all the up to date drivers for the 5315????Please -
http://microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0291482
thats where i got mine from - $380 but mine is a 5315-2122 -
I tried it in my 5315 and found the 3Gb limit still applied plus the memory was downclocked to 667Mhz.
The fastest memory for the 5315 in my experience is the Kingston Hyperx 667 CL4 in a 1Gb plus 2Gb configuration (the 1Gb in the slot nearest the motherboard).
Intel's 'flex' memory controller logic enables the system to run in dual channel symmetric mode with this memory configuration and still give you the best possible performance. (according to the 965 chipset family documentation at intel.com)
The AMD Turionx2 processor in the HP laptop, with its on cpu memory controller, picked up and used all the speed and low latency from the faster memory. (That old AMD architecture is still pretty special!)
-
Do you remember when the frequency downclocked, did the ram timings downclock as well ?
Which memory config do you have in your notebook now ?
