Hi guys. First post here. Just want to pass on my appreciation to bigozone and others who brought my 5315 back from the brink. I have upgraded hard drive, 3gb of ram and a T5550. I noticed that after flashing the bios to 1.43, the fan was very aggressive and loud, and I was sure the fan was quite silent with the old bios. So I reflashed to the old bios 1.27, yes with the new cpu and ram, and voila! now nice and quiet once again. CPU core steady at 48 deg. So if fan noise is getting to you, give the 1.27 bios a try, at your own risk of course. It's working great in mine. I realize this may not be possible for those of you with the t9xxxx chips. cheers!

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me recover my bios by giving me the right recovery disk. I tried the FN thing and it detects my flash drive (I know because it blinks) but it doesn't do anything, the fan just keeps spinning and I let it sit there for an hour and still nothing, also Please don't give me the one that is on the other thread because I already tried it. [/B]HUGE THANKS to anyone who could help me, I really need this computer to work again.

    hello,
i've succeeded upgrading my bios to v1.33 as adviced.
i used the winflash utility and closed with the task manager the explorer and all the apps i could, it seemed bugging but succeeded. i'm running windows 7 beta.

For the record it's a REALLY BAD IDEA to run a BIOS flash - designed for another operating system - on a new operating system in BETA state.

after the bios upgrade success to v1.33, i've reput the t9500 cpu but the pc doesn't show the acer boot screen, black screen nothing displays.
i guess that to reinstall vista, i need to get the acer boot menu, isn't it ?

    ok, didn't know that.
but with the old cpu celeron m 530, the pc boots, and in the setup it says 1.33.

are you sure it won't work at all ?

windows 7 boots with the celeron.

If when the laptop boot it says 1.33 then you updated successfully.

What I meant is that you shouldn't have started the update in the first place because it's very dangerous. You don't know what may happen when you start to update your BIOS - made for Vista - on a new operating system in BETA state which means it's far from stable. You actually don't know if the updater will work as it should and you could've ended up with a dead laptop.
This time you got lucky and you've succeeded but I suggest you never do that again :)

ok but that would mean reinstalling vista before.

and i know that i'll have to reinstall vista for resolving the cooling issue with the t9500 cpu.
that means installing vista two times.

in fact, i'd like to know from which number of bios version, the t9500 is supported.
for now, the bios of my aspire is at version 1.33

Ok, first as far as I know all 5315 have the same motherboard. So this is not a problem.
Second, again as far as I know all 5315 have GL960/GM965 chipset which does support FSB up to 800Mhz.

So the problem is most likely the BIOS...

it's not a final version. it can have bugs or flaw errors.

IT FINALLY WORKED !! with bios 1.43
    I DIDN'T EVEN REINSTALLED WINDOWS !!
IS THAT WHAT THEY CALL A COLD BOOT ?

    i posted here the screenshot
    http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/6558/t9500.gif

the next step is to replace the 1 gig ram of the top slot to a 2 gig ram and it will do 3 gigs, and to install a 64 bits os.

    No overheat to report

Hi guys. One further update note. I have now upgraded to a T8300 at 2.4 ghz, 3mb ram, Vista basic and bios 1.27. The fan rarely comes on (ie. once every 15 minutes) and when it does, it's is BARELY audible. Both cores are steady right around 39 deg. C. under moderate load. For the cost of the machine and the upgrades, this is outstanding value. The T8300 runs about 8 degrees cooler than the T5550 in my machine, all else being the same.

1/ i'm happy to have been bold to have bought a t9500, i have 2.6 Ghz
1b/ i'm going to put a kit of 1+2G Kingston HyperX Performance (i still have to buy them)
    KHX6400S2LLK2/3G

    2/ same for me.

    3/ I didn't checked that. i guess cpu-z will help me.

4/ I do agree. This is the benefit of the multi core, the charge of calculs (and Joule effect i.e. T° created by electrons movements) is dispatched into different places of the cpu

Congrats Endriu! Having used the T5550 in my first upgrade, I know it's a huge improvement over the Celeron. This is now one smokin' hot little machine! (Don't forget that the 2gb dimm goes in the top slot). Cheers! chip.

    Nice one Endriu!!

    I just won a T7500 for $117.50 (~US$80)
Not too bad a price, have seen lesser CPU's go for more.
Now I have to wait for delivery :/

Honestly didn't think I would win, so had placed a bid on a T5450 too!
I bid $30, it's sitting on $2.25 now, but there's still 5 days to go on that one so hopefully someone will outbid me.
I hope so anyway! .... there's another T5450 with a BIN price of $49.95, no one has bought that.

Was looking at some X7900 and X9000's too, they were all ES chips..... even though they have final-release steppings I didn't trust 'em.
Besides, the seller's likely got them very cheap (or even free)... there's no way I'm giving them US$300+ for an ES!

    Hi Guys,

I'm owning an Aspire 5315. I however have some performance issues with the laptop.

I'm using it rather a lot in combination with Flash Media Encoder which results in a rather high CPU (average 80%) which makes it crash after a while. (Screen is'nt black but it's frozen and the red processor LED is burning constantly)

I downloaded a program which measures the temperature of my laptop. At one time it crashed when the temperature was 64c but it also crashed when it was 54c.

I cleaned the fan on the rear bottom side but now I've heard that there's another fan beside the CPU? Where can I find a guide how to clean this one? It seems the keyboard needs to be dismantled for this.

Furthermore how can I upgrade my laptop so that the CPU assuage will decrease? Does memory upgrade help a bit or is everything rather prospectless due to the single core processor?

    Hi, welcome to NBR.

    1. Your temperatures are fine, 55-65ºC is nothing, especially considering the fact that your 5315 probably have a Celeron.
    2. There isn't a second fan in Aspire 5315. Actually most of the laptops come with one fan only, only high-end laptops for like 2000 bucks or more have more fans.
    3. You should be able to upgrade to any Core 2 Duo Socket P with max FSB 800Mhz . Since you're doing intensive CPU tasks, the CPU upgrade is highly recommended. T7500 or even better - T8300 will make a huge difference performance-wise.
    4. Memory upgrade might help too. How much RAM do you have now? Aspire 5315 can take up to 3GB in certain "slot configuration". If you have 2GB though I wouldn't bother upgrading the RAM.

Thanks for the quick reply. Much quicker than this is'nt possible I guess :)

First of all I'm using a Celeron processor and have 2 GB.

I opened the laptop and there's quit some dust in there. I don't know if this could explain the crash problems. As you're saying the temperature is fine, what else could explain the crash down?

Maybe I should try installing the latest firmware as I read somewhere about fan control issues with old firmware's.

How difficult is a CPU upgrade? I've got some IT skills but not extensive. And how much does a 2core processor cost? (A quick search saw about € 250,-)

The crash...could be cause by any software or hardware, I really can't say more without any error codes or something - more details.

Yes, overheating can cause crashes, slowdowns etc but your temps seem fine...

Yes, Aspire 5315 has known problems caused of some BIOS versions so flashing to the latest BIOS might solve your current problem. You might need to flash to the latest BIOS anyway if you decide to upgrade the CPU.

CPU upgrade in laptops nowadays, especially in Aspire 5315, is very easy, you don't need to be an expert at all. Check the first page of this thread for a CPU upgrade guide.
Prices...it depends. Where are you buying it. Used or new? I'd recommend you look at ebay some used CPUs, you can probably find T8300 for 100-150 euros..

By the way, buying ES(engineering sample) CPUs is NOT recommended.

5315 with 3GB ram and T7500 all for $500(~US$350), nice.
    Might start playing with undervolting.
    Anyone need a Celery M540? :D

Thank you for the excellent leg work on all of your behalfs, I just upgraded my Acer 5315 to a T5750. Could not find a T7300 or better at the time for a good price. This forum ROCKS!!! Keep up the good work. Now I have to upgrade the wifes 5315 as she is envious of mine. LOL.

    Thanks again to all...

Edit: Anyone swapped their DVD drive to a Blu-ray yet?
hmmmmm, not having much luck finding one for laptops.

Hello i was reading this post and other related but i have a lot of doubts.
I have an Acer 5315. Intel Celeron 530, Chipset Mobile Intel GL960 Express, 1Gb DDR2 667MHz. Windows Vista Home Basic. Bios version is 1.19v.
    I’ll buy 1Gb Kingston DDR2 667 so as to have 2Gb.
Searching information I have found this forum and now I have some doubts:
    1) Differences between GL960 and GM965. I read more about 965 and I don’t know if GL960 can support same processors .
    2) Everest said that my RAM’s laptop is running to 533 MHz, if I upgrade to the latest version of Bios can run to 667 MHz or 800 MHz?
    3) I don’t understand the information of this forum about which processor can I buy to upgrade my laptop. My knowledge about this processors is 0.
    4) My socket put mPGA 478MN and is purple, I don’t understand if this one is N or P, I don’t know how can I identify a valid processor in Processor Compatibility Guide
    Thanks for all.

    1. The difference apply mainly to the IGP(integrated graphic card) and supported RAM limit, not the CPUs.
    2. 667Mhz RAM is what Santa Rosa chipset supports max(GL960/GM965/PM965)
    3. You can upgrade to any Merom/Penryn socket P FSB 800Mhz. You can't upgrade to the new Montevina CPUs.
    4. All 5315 should have socket P..as far as I know..

The CPU will work at FSB 800MHz(if the CPU is actually FSB 800Mhz) but the RAM will work at 667Mhz(if the RAM actually support it). Santa Rosa chipset has 800Mhz FSB limit and 667Mhz RAM limit.

Hi guys. Final upgrade was to update to a 7200 rpm hard drive to put the icing on the cake. I was surprised at how much more snap the 7200rpm hard drive gives vs. the 5400.

Final setup on the Acer 5315 is:

Intel Core 2 Duo t8300 at 2.4 ghz.
    3 gb ram
7200 rpm 250 gb. hard drive
Replaced french/english keyboard with regular english keyboard.
    Vista Basic.

This is a very sweet little machine now. Works flawlessly.

You're right ATG. For anyone looking for a smokin' little 15 inch notebook, I'd say get your hands on one of these from ebay, make these upgrades, and you've got a machine that will do everything you'll need for the next 5 years.

    cheers. :D

Hello, I have a few questions as to be sure I am doing things right.

I have an acer aspire 5315-2326. I have downloaded windows xp and will burn it to cd as i want to delete vista.

These are the steps i think i am supposed to do after perusing the threads and please correct me if i am wrong as i've never attempted to upgrade a laptop except for memory. i have purchased a t8300 oem cpu, 2gigs of memory and an internal sata harddrive.

    1. create vista os discs from harddrive in case of later use.
    2. save and burn any files from my harddrive that i want to use on xp.
    3. update bios to 1.43
    4. install cpu
    5. install harddrive
    6. install memory (in that order?)

this may be too simplistic and i'm missing some steps. i did read you should burn the windows xp software with compatible modem or harddrive drivers, otherwise the bios cannot read it???

please nitpick my steps freely and add anything i may be missing as i said this is my first attempt at upgrading and this is the only computer i have at this time.

i want to be sure i am not unaware of any important details and am not missing any crucial information or steps. i am not very computer literate so the more detailed or simple the explanation the easier it will be for me to understand or locate what i need.

    thanks a lot!

    a

The steps you've described are fine though the order of installing a CPU/HDD/RAM is not important, for example you can install the RAM first then the CPU etc, it doesn't matter which goes first. The first 3 steps are fine.

About XP installation you'll need to slipstream a SATA driver into your XP installation CD otherwise XP won't see your hard disk and will not install. If you don't know how to do that an excellent guide can be found here. If you think slipstreaming a driver is too complicated for you or for some reason you don't want to or have the time to do it then just go into the BIOS(F2 on boot) and switch the HDD option from AHCI to IDE. This way XP will install normally, no need to modify the installation media.
By the way Acer do NOT provide XP drivers for Aspire 5315 but I think you can get all the drivers from that slipstreaming link I gave you. Basically all the info you need is in the first post of this thread.

just thought i'd stick my head back in. had my t8100 in for about 8 months now. all is going great, the only other thing i have done since is put in a 250gb hdd. very glad i found this thread, and thanks for everyone's help. currently on the lookout for a cpu to suit a gl40 chipset in a compaq, those dual core celerons are ok, but don't have speedstep, which chews the battery up pretty quick.

    anyway, thanks again...

i want to replace the optical drive. does it matter what brand or specs it is or will just any laptop drive work??

it will be used and doesn't have a face plate.

now i'm assuming it must have an sata connector. the ones i look at on ebay don't specify.

doesn't front bezel have to match?

what do i need to look for?

    thanks

this step by step guide sucks. it's all over the place and not step by step at all.

where is the directions for installing harddrive or do you have to sift through one hundred posts for that info?

or the optical drives and related info?

    pfft

This is a step-by-step CPU guide which, of course, has nothing to do with the hard drive or the optifcal drive. If you need help with HDD or ODD please create another thread, don't hijack this one.
Though with that attitude I doubt that anyone of the Acer crowd will help you out.

Hey, I don't know if I shouldn't be asking this question under this thread, but can anyone help me update my bios. Every time I try to update it stops and the computer freezes. I closed every program I know and it still does it. Can anyone tell me how to do it using the dos way because I think that is the only way I'm going to get this to work. If someone can please help me I would greatly appreciate it thanks.
