I read the instructions on upgrading a 5315 and they are very good. I would like to know how to make a bootable cd with 1.33 bios file. The bios file is 1480831 bytes and this is larger than a regular floppy which is 1457664 bytes. I tried making a bootable cd, was successful but after it booted it asked for 1. floppy. I prefer to use DOS than Windows. Kindly list the steps. I use Roxio Creator 2009 software.
    Thanks

Hi there, I just joined up to this forum just to get help on getting the most out of upgrade my 5315. I'm actually surprised as to how upgrade-friendly this notebook is.

I have maxed out the recommended RAM capacity to 2GBs, and I need to ask if it is possible to max it out further. I cannot tell by what certain people are saying on the forum, so I would rather know first-hand.

I also currently have an Intel C2D T8100 on its way. Very stupid questions (considering I've already paid for it), but is it absolutely certain that I am able to replace the CPU with the new one without problems. If there are general problems that arise with CPU change on this brand of laptop (i.e. overheating or BSoD) is it still possible to deal with these problems?

    1. 5315 can take 3GB of RAM max in certain slot/stick combo. I don't remember the combination so you'll have to move the sticks around for a bit.

    2. Yeah T8100 should work without problem with BIOS v1.29 and above. You shouldn't experience overheating and/or BSODs. Keep in mind that no one here will tell you that he's absolutely certain about anything. If you want to be a 100% sure it's better to call a certified technician :)

Thanks for that. Is there anything else worth upgrading on the laptop? And what does anyone recommend about installing Windows 7 beta on the 5315?

No need to format, your laptop should recognize the new CPU and continue to work as before but you know, a little faster :D
Yeah I'd suggest a HDD upgrade - 320GB 7200rpm if possible. W7 should work fine.

    Hi all.
Just to let you know Ive installed Windows 7 (Build 7127 x86)

Running sweet. Ive added the gadget (CPR & RAM Usage) - CPU running at 2%, RAM running at 50-55% constantly. I havent touched any upgrades on the laptop yet, so its still manufacturers hardware.

    :)

    Edit:
    Just ordered :
    Kingston ValueRAM 2Gb DDR2 667MHz SODIMM Memory
    Kingston ValueRAM 1Gb DDR2 667MHz SODIMM Memory

Should drop that 50-55% down a touch. Will let you know.

    Edit:
    RAM Delivered :

RAM usage has dropped to approx 15-20% now... Everything running smooth.
Dont forget, I'm still only running at 1.6 standard CPU. Will upgrade soon as be back to let u know.

    God. Windows 7 r0x!

    Processor (T7500) Ordered - £46.00 from eBay - Bargin!
    Awaiting delivery!
Ooooh this is so 'effing exciting!! hahaha!

    Wassup.
    T7500 delivered and installed.

Installation was easy (BigO - Legend). Even better when I didnt have to buy my own arctic paste, the geezer down the local computer shop gimmie a squirt of his (hrmmm that sounded dodgey lol)

The idle temp is running at 33% (Average). Does this seem right?

Also, should I format the laptop and reinstall Windows?

Windows 7 booted up fine, found the T7500, asked me to reboot and that was it.

    Cheers.
    Ryan

p.s. my CPU socket was Pink.

Besides Ram, Cpu, and HDD upgrades that should about cover it. I am dual booting Vista and Windows 7 RC 32 bit right now on my 5315. Seems to work pretty good. Some of the Acer software for system back up and stuff will not work but that is to be expected. Overall runs really well with Windows 7. When Windows 7 final release is done hopefully should see software updates for Acer specific programs.

done a bit of research for you...the best (safe) cpu upgade would be a T3400 socket P. as this would be a straight swap and bios will support it as is.

as for the T8100 will get back to you :D

Hello, everyone. I am very sorry if I am being too noobish or if I haven't read up enough on this subject. I just need some advice on what to do.

I bought this Acer Aspire 5315-2639 on Black Friday 2008 and I had no idea it was so upgradable, so finding this thread was really fortunate! Up until now I had no problems with the laptop the way it is, and I still have no real problems with it, I just can't play video games I want.

I am an incoming freshman to college and I just need this laptop for word processing and excel and such but I would also like to be able to play games like The Sims 3 (hey, any other cool things I could do with this laptop are welcome!).

I've already downloaded The Sims 3 on my computer to see if it would run as is, but unfortunately the game is waaay too slow to actually play.

Sorry for the long story, but here's my situation: this would be my first time changing a CPU on a computer and upgrading RAM on a laptop. I have about 400 bucks to spend on this upgrade and I want to make my Aspire 5315 as good as it can be with US$400. Which processor should I buy that would play The Sims 3 perfectly?

Another quick question: I'm pretty sure I can't upgrade my graphics card (can I?), but would upgrading my CPU and my RAM make the graphics of a game better, like could I set the graphics settings to a higher setting than they are right now, which are the lowest possible settings?

Any and all help are appreciated, you can e-mail me at [email protected] if you would rather PM me.

    Thank you!

    Lwinding,

Upgrading your CPU will not help much, if at all, with intensive 3D graphics Windows games, as the bottleneck would be your graphics card, and not the chip. I've just upgraded my CPU to a T9300 (very nice, and no cooling problems with the 1.45 bios) and it made no difference for Direct-X games with Vista.

Having said that, downgrading to XP made a noticeable difference in speed for myself - your experience may differ. It wasn't miraculously faster, but I was able to play 3D games at the lowest settings. Remember, this isn't a gaming laptop. [However, dual booting using Linux (Linux Mint 7), you will find that 3D open source Linux games run fairly quickly, but it won't make a difference for Windows games.]

For other uses besides gaming, with $400 (USD?) I would upgrade your CPU, RAM, and HDD to whatever you can afford. Just make sure you buy a socket P chip and not a variant. Don't forget your thermal compound for your CPU heatsink. And if you are venturous, downgrade to XP Pro SP2 (other better still, use Linux).

    Cheers!

Thanks a lot for the advice! My dad said he would help me buy a desktop computer and although it hasn't arrived yet, the specs are much better (4gb of RAM, E7400 intel processor, 500gb HDD, and although it comes with an integrated GMA graphics card, at least I can upgrade it).

This thread is amazing and people here are really friendly! I appreciate the thoughtful response but I think I will just stick to upgrading my RAM (as I already bought 1gig) on this laptop and use it for school work, while the desktop will be used for things like gaming.

    Thank you, once again!

"but on 7-25-08 i did get report of WINFLASH hanging durring verification step, when user killed all power it also killed his BIOS and maybe MORE... (lesson::: DO NOT REMOVE AC & BATTERY while PC is powered up, even if it seems locked up"

PLEASE HELP!!!! I read this little warning after my 5315 froze up and wouldnt shut down during a winflash error. Now I have nothing at all no leds, power, nothing!!!! Is it dead?

    What I have tried:
    Different power outlet
taking battery out and holding power button for a minute
just leaving it alone for a day
finally just gave it a light smack

    Thank you for any help.

    Hi hotrippr,
The first post of this thread has the answer you need, but here it is anyway:

ASPIRE 5315 BIOS RECOVERY using a USB THUMBDRIVE

Try to avoid this as much as possible, or you will slam the HDD's head(s) into its platter(s), then you will be smacking yourself!

No your computer is probably not ruined I did the same thing, follow the directions from previous comment, If that does not work try to the cd strategy which is about the same. I've done this a couple of times the first time the computer turned on but showed a blinking cursor on a black screen (I used the usb method and it worked fine) the second time the computer did nothing when i hit the power button thats when I had to use the cd method because the usb method didn't work. Good luck if you need help post me and I will help.

You should only upgrade BIOS to whatever your operating system is...

If you run WinXP - download the XP one
If you run WinVISTA - download the VISTA one

Just to add, I'm running Windows7 & I successfully updated to v.1.45 using the VISTA update.

How did you use a cd if your laptop didn't do anything? I mean I haven't any power at all, can't even open the cd tray. Tried so many times today, still no luck.

When you do the whole FN, Esc thing does the fan spin if not then your in trouble? Otherwise if the fan is spinning you should be able to open the cd drive and insert a cd.

It's made for Vista(at least that is what Acer say but putting it under the "Vista" section) but it does work under XP aswell. I've updated under both Vista & XP....
I guess if Acer claim it's a Vista update it will be better to upgrade under Vista. Make sure your OS is stable(if you experience random crashes for no reason then DON'T attempt a BIOS update as your computer might crash in the middle of the updating process), fresh restart your computer then close all open programs like IMs, browsers, antivirus, firewalls etc......

I guess you could but personally, I wouldn't update my BIOS under a beta OS which might crash unexpectedly for whatever reason. As for the version - choose the latest one, 1.43 or 1.45, can't remember which one was it.

Now that Windows 7 final is actually out (build 7600.16385 is the RTM - avoid 7600.16384), does the 4GB issue still persist with Windows 7 x64?

Hello guys , first sorry for my English, well in a few days i will try to upgrade my processor.

My system is ACER ASPIRE 5315-2844 with Bios (1.44) (rare because is not in ACER website)

My system is motherboard ACADIA with now 3 GB of ram , when i put 4GB the system hangs after one or two minutes :( .

Well my Acer has a Intel Celeron Dual Core T1400 , a friend of mine has a LG notebook with similar characteristics and Core 2 duo 7100 , my friend is a programmer , He says that my notebook has good Speed
here in Argentina could buy an Intel T5900, 2.10 GHz x2 cores.

My doubts are that the seller assures that T5900 works perfect on my Acer notebook.

Another question is that I can not enable or to make an underclocking for battery life, Now i ran my system for 1 hour 30 minutes with T1400 (1,73 ghz x2) .

    Now the real thing :
1-It is desirable to change the T1400 for a t5900?

2-I will not play video games on this machine that the video card is bad.

3-How much difference when changing the processor to enable SpeedStep in the life of the battery? now lasts 1:30 hours,
and with a new processor with speed step? how long?

4-The t5900 will it cost USS 100 in Argentina, one 1 dollar now worth 3.86 Argentine pesos, and costs 150 USS t8100, is a lot of money for me, so I want to see that change is warranted.

Thanks to everyone for the help those who have made the switch processor.

We are not deaf. Have some patience.

    - The socket color doesn't matter.
    - Aspire 5315 does NOT support 4GB of RAM.

    1. It depends. Do you find your laptop to be slow? If you need some more speed(CPU intensive tasks) yeah, get that T5900, it should work.
    2. The videocard is not upgradeble.
    3. Well...it depends. That T1400 is actually a Celeron right? In that case if you install T5900 it should give you better battery life.. By how much? No one could tell you exactly.
Bottom line no matter what C2D CPU you'll choose you should achieve better battery life, especially if you do some undervolting... Check the undervolting guide for more info.

By the way please do not post in language other than English or if you do please provide a proper translation.

Hello , i sucessfully upgrade my Acer 5315 -2844 with CELERON DUAL CORE T1400 1,73 ghz x2 , the motherboard socket is CREAM COLOR OR BEIGE... well..

The new processor is a Intel CORE 2 Duo T5900 2.20 ghz x2 with speedstep and others instructions.

Now the battery life is 2 hours, and with the Celeron T1400 without Speedstep 1 hour 30 minutes.

Is not a good gain if battery life :(

In power... i cant see much changes, the T1400 is a good option .

The T5900 is powerful but in common uses i cant see any changes.

    Greetings

    I gain this things :

A 33% gain in battery run time is not good?

This depends of the Scale or unit of measurement (Sorry for my English) In percent yes.. in Time maybe,
I thought gain more time on battery, like 2 hours 30 minutes, i read on some forums a guy who obtain 4 hurs... but maybe a joke...

If you do maths, the celeron is running at 100% constant, and lasts 1 ½ hours (FULL POWER )

And the T5900 works at 700 mhz each core vs 1700 mhz on T1400, its a big difference but, 30 minutes.....

Well i should try only work without Internet wifi and ethernet no games , no movies , maybe the battery gain much more time.

I have a an Acer Aspire 5315 laptop which has both the ram and CPU upgraded. I upgraded the ram to 2gb and upgraded the cpu form an Intel celeron processor 540 1.86GHz to an Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7250 2.00GHz. At the moment it reaches a clock rate of 2.0GHz maximum, I need to know why my CPU can't get any higher than that since it has 2 processors 0_0.

    I have a friend who has a core 2 duo processor @ 1.5ghz and it reaches 2.79GHz :(.

well I suggest you read from the beginning of this thread to know what options you have. I think the processors people would consider are in the T5XXX series and T7XXX series. or maybe the T2500

I'd just like to say many thanks for all the useful information in this post.

Just popped a T7300 (£36 from ebay) in my 5315, took 10 mins and no problems at all.

Flys along now (used to be a 2ghz celeron 550) like a new laptop at a fraction of the price.

Thanks again, and to anyone with doubts......... do it!

    Horobi

I was wondering if i could put a T8300 in my Aspire 4315. I'm running windows vista 32 bit and I've put 3 gigs or ram in already. I just want to know for sure.
