First and foremost... I would like to thank all that have contributed to this thread. Your information has helped a lot.

My mom passed away just over a year ago. We have her laptop (Acer Aspire 5315-2326) and was not sure what to do with it.
I can build a PC from parts but never tinkered on a laptop. Until now that is.

First thing was upgrade the firmware to 1.45.

I ordered two 2 gig crucial ram chips off of ebay for under ten dollars shipped. Tried to get 4 gig to work but no luck. It had two 1 gig chips so I took one out and put one of the 2 gig chips in. Success!!! 3 gigs of ram.

Upgraded to a Core 2 Duo T7700 processor for just under five dollars shipped from an ebay seller.

Had a crucial m4 128 gig SSD drive laying around so in it went. This gave the best overall performance increase.

Upgraded the internal wi-fi card to Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000. Hindsight says that this was a poor upgrade. Purchased it for a few cents so no big loss.
Ordered the USB 3.0 wi-fi adapter 1200Mbps dual band 802.11 ac from Amazon. A LOT BETTER!!!

2 Port USB 3.0 54mm Express Card NEC Chipset Adapter Converter Card installed. Now it has USB 3.0!

Lastly, the operating system is now Windows 10 pro.

It is now a great laptop that I can use for odd things. Example: our upcoming vacation. I can use the USB 3.0 ports to backup photos from our DSLR camera to external hard drives.

    Thanks again for everyone's help.

Hi folk. Thanks everyone for help.
Just found this laptop (Acer 5315-2803) in garbage room and it is fully working. Just slowly becuase of Celeron 540.
Found in drawer 2x2GB ram modules. 4GB - is not working. 3GB is working but you have to play with memory slots (as it was mentioned somewhere here).
Ordered Core 2 Duo T7500 on ebay for 5 canadian dollars I guess.
Bought for 20 cad msata 120GB for cheap with mSATA to SATA adaptor.
It will be still capable for office things etc.
    Cheers!

It sounds like you are making great headway with your 5315, with the CPU upgrade you should see a huge difference........keep us informed on progress. Wouldn't the 4GB work on a 64bit system?

Look fwd to hearing about your progress

    BIOS shows 4GB of RAM.
But when I try load OS - BSOD.
When I try to install new OS - BSOD.
Which is weird. Normally if BIOS shows that it means everything is fine.
I don't know, may be it will be fixed if I program the latest BIOS firmware but not sure. Somewhere in this thread I saw that 4GB doesn't work...
3GB is already good enough anyway.

Oops, sorry things aren't working out but you seem very close to success. I guess the first thing to check is your version of Windows, if 32bit or 64bit........also if your 5315 is capable of 64bit.
You could try running with only 2GB ram......see if that works and also make sure fan is plugged in and working.
    .....and what bios is running?

I don't use Windows on my 5315 so I can't tell you how to check.....but not all 5315s are capable of using 64bit......google a howto to check if your machine is 32bit only......can't run 64bit on a 32bit only machine.

Grabbed a used 5315 for USD 30 and upgraded to a T8300, 3GB RAM, 120GB SSD, USB3.0 ExpressCard and WLAN ac USB-Stick running Windows 10.

Also have another 160GB HDD running with Triple-Boot: Windows 7 Starter (x86), Windows XP Professional SP3 and Ubuntu 16.04. (x64). USB 3.0 & WLAN ac will only run in Win7 and 10, no support for both in Linux.

BIOS is 1.45, did not experiment with a modded one.
Amazing DIY-project to keep an old device alive, upgradability is nice.

Is that the latest BIOS from Acer Europe? They never put the newest for this model on the USA site.

    Posted by: who can check?

My GL960 and 5 GB of memory:
    ZY
I tried to encroach on 6. I did not overcome. 4 + 2 - black screen. 2 + 4 - the laptop starts up, you can go into the BIOS, but the installed Win7_64 hangs up and does not boot. The Win7 installer freezes on the "Starting Windows" screen. What is interesting, but if you install Vin7_32 with less memory, and then add up to 6 GB, then the system boots and works normally. AIDA64 shows all 6 gig, but Windows uses, of course, only 3. Matter of course, left 5 and set Vin7_64

In the first slot 1, in the second - 4. On the contrary, does not want a black screen.

I had an Acer Aspire 5320 ,and i upgraded its Celeron m530 to a C2D T8300 but i couldn't Enable VT with stock the BIOS.
So i had to use a mod BIOS to enable it with the following steps:
1.-Download last version of the official BIOS (V1.45 ) from https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support
2.-After that unzip the file BIOS_V1.45.ZIP and then run BIOS_V1.45.exe, it will uncompress the files of the .exe
3.-Replace the file "CL50145A.fd" ,with the file "icl50_1.45_black_edition_40.fd" from this link https://mega.nz/#F!iJ5FwAoR!PqYOcbC_r9dciJ5sut6AfA
4.-Then, execute InsydeFlash.exe as Administrator and flash the BIOS.

The original post said the bios may be compatible with the Aspire 5315, Aspire 5320, Aspire 5715Z, Aspire 5720, Aspire 7320, eMachines E510 but I'm not sure if works with all those laptops, i just flashed it on my aspire 5320.

Do it by your own risk ,Im not responsible if you damage your Laptop, but at least that worked for my Aspire 5320..

I hope this can help you guys

Didn't Acer's Europe site have version 1.49 for the BIOS? I know when I had my 5315 and upgraded it to a Core 2 Duo I found a newer BIOS on the EU site.

Upgrade ACER 5315. Bios flashed v1.45 (mod). The processor put the Intel Core 2 Duo T9300, initially there was a NANYA 1Gb DDR2 667 memory bar, added a 2Gb DDR2 667 HYNIX HYMP125S64CP8-Y5-C memory bar, it became 3Gb. I changed the hard drive to SSD and rolled up windows 10 LTSB 32x bit. The laptop came to life, just do not know. Only began to strain the low speed of Wi-Fi. I ordered the AzureWave AW-CB161H board and a metal adapter to increase the size, the drivers picked up with an automatic machine. At 2.4 GHz, the real speed is 80-90 megabits on the local network. I see 5 GHz networks, but I’m neighboring, I can't check the speed, 2.4 GHz router. Plus, Bluetooth appeared, I connected wireless headphones and a speaker. He took everything on Ali, who can come in handy.

Hey guys. I've been following the steps and advice on here after I was given an old Aspire 5351, I've already updated the BIOS to 1.45 and the motherboard is Revision 3.0. I've got an Atheros AR5B22 Dual-Band WiFi card with Bluetooth, 128gb ssd crucial M4, T8300 CPU, 2 sticks of Crucial RAM 1GB, 2GB 5300 667mhz, a replacement 5200mah Green Cell battery with the correct voltage as the current failing battery and a 2 USB 3.0 ports express card on order.

I have a couple of questions.
    1. With this new CPU can I install and run Windows 10 x64?
    2. Someone on here mentioned that they'd upgraded their LCD from 800P to 1200P. How can I do the same and where do I get the part from?
    3. I've also got a list of replacements and upgrade to order at a later date. Front bezel with webcam slot, webcam, speakers, microphone and LCD cable with the attachment for the webcam. Will these all go in to the Aspire 5315 as they're all compatible, same with the parts I've already ordered?
    4. With Windows 10 and the motherboard being Revision 3.0 can I install 4GB RAM or is it still just 3GB RAM?
