This will give you an idea:
    Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 1.66GHz compare Intel Celeron M 530 1.73GHz CPU
but getting a SSD will result in big improvement in response.

Why would you want too stay at about the same speed! I use windows 7 64bit use 3gb ram 4 gb just didn't work! But went too the speed of 2.4ghz! T7700. I only put a 320gb drive though, at 7200rpm! Also clean the fan! And output side! Also clean off all the heat sink compound and put New!

The Broadcom BCM943224HMS 802.11b/g/n Dual band WiFi card works well..( $12 on ebay ) you get 2.4 and 5 ghz.. 5 ghz n narrow band 20mhz. Also its the lower channels it doesnt see the 100+ ones. you will need a pci-e half height adapter with screws that suit ( about $4 ) the original card is full height and this broadcom is half height.
i have windows 8.1 and the drivers are automatically installed.. I dont know about other versions.. 2.4 performance is better than the original card. It detects weaker networks..Ping to router is vastly better on 5 ghz. Data transfer rate using speedtest website is doubled !!!. Using Inssider 3.0 the link scores are 2.4 ghz 22 and 5 ghz 68 . Higher is better.. Also be warned a intel 7260HMW failed to boot, could not even enter bios settings. I hope this helps others.
Here is image of inssider 3.0 with some comments [IMG]

PS the wifi on off button also works and for some reason the task bar wif icon only shows a few bars but the connection works perfectly :)

    Hi Guys,
In my Aspire 5315 i have motherboard with GL960 chipset and mPGA478MN socket + Celeron 530. I want to change CPU and i found info about Core 2 Duo T8100, T8300, T9300 or T9600 which will be work on this motherboard. Is this true? Do You have some experiences with one of those CPUs in Aspire 5315 with GL960? Price for T9600 is now around 40$ and tomorrow i can buy this CPU. It will be works?

I made BIOS update and now i have V1.45.

    Thx for Your help

I am upgrade cpu Celeron 530 to Core2 Duo T9300.
Now I has 2.5GHz with FSB800. I am very glade.
Bus now cooler works every time :( with firmware v1.45

    В общем стоял селерон 530 1.7GHz. Поставил Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz.

    Hi folks,
I recently got hold of an Aspire 5315 and now want to update the BIOS and upgrade the hardware. After some searching I found this thread. I saw some recent edits so I believe it is still fresh.

The original posting contains a lot of links to other threads in this forum regarding updating, upgrading and other interesting stuff. However, the forum software has changed so most of the links don't work any more - at least not for me. I figured that I only have to change the link slightly to make it working again and open the original thread. I assume that you've also found out that only the number (using t=<number>) is needed to assemble a working URL.

    Example Original Link (broken):
BIOS RECOVERY and DOS FLASH instructions
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=251906
    New Link (working):
BIOS RECOVERY and DOS FLASH instructions
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/251906/

If, however, the original link points to a posting (using p=<number>) the following approach repairs the link:

    Example Original Link (broken):
UPDATING BIOS using the windows flasher
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3379018#post3379018
    New Link (working):
UPDATING BIOS using the windows flasher
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/posts/3379018/

    Hope that helps.

After I successfully upgraded the BIOS to 1.45, I looked for faster replacement to the built-in Celeron 550 processor (Penryn based, single core, 2.0 GHz, 1 MByte L2 cache, 533MT/s FSB).

Intel's documents on the 965 Express Chipset (used at least in my Aspire 5315) indicate that the chipset supports both 533 MT/s (166 MHz) and 800 MT/s (200 MHz) FSB. The matching processor pinout is called " Socket P".

I assumed that all mobile Core 2 Duo processors matching the electrical specifications above should run on the Aspire (minus unexpected BIOS quirks or bugs). So I checked Wikipedia's list of Core 2 Duo processors. I figured that I'd want one of the T8100/T8300 (3 MByte L2 cache) or T9300/T9500 (6 MByte L2 cache) dual core processors. As the T8100 (2,1 GHz, 800 MT/s FSB) was available on ebay for only 5€, I ordered one.

I followed the installation instructions on posting #2 and the new T8100 processor was installed in next to no time.

I strongly recommend that you apply a small blob of thermal paste on the heatsink after step #9 (place the new cpu in the socket) and before step #10 (remount). At first, I tried without. Checking the processor temperature on Linux with lm-sensors while hogging the processor running stress --cpu 2 --timeout 1, however, the core temperature soared critically. So I disassembled the heatsink, cleaned it, applied thermal paste and replaced it. Now the temperature stays at +60°C even running 'stress' for minutes (without option --timeout).

With the T8100, Windows 7 installed smoothly (without any drivers manually provided, sound, wifi, networking and graphics are working fine) and the Aspire is now more than twice as fast.

Based on my experience, I believe your upgrade configuration should work without problems. Use thermal compound otherwise the cooling system might not work as expected. While you are at it, clean any dust of the fan and the fins of the heat spreader.

I'd choose the T8300 as it has the better cost-benefit ratio in my opinion. Then I only have the T8100.

I'd say get the T8300. IMO T9300 should work but you might get heat troubles, T9xxx are known to run significantly hotter than T8xxx

Hey...Here's what I want to know. Can One bolt a motherboard OTHER than an ICL50 (with the Intel GM960/965 Chipset) onto the bottom of the palmrest of the 5315/5520...I mean an UPGRADE (for a possible chipset upgrade) not swap Intel for AMD....like put a NEW MODEL Motherboard into the 5315/5520 case? ICL 50 boards are over 10 years old. What can we put up there NOW?

    Hello.

I have been keeping an eye on this thread for years and years. Our Acer 5315 refuses to die. I upgraded it firstly to a T8100 + 3GB + SSD + 802.11N card.

Today I have upgraded it for the last time to the T9300. The CPU is working well on Windows 10. The clock multiplier is working correctly. Temperature is idling at around 45-50 degrees Celsius. Max temperature at full load seems to be around 67 degrees. I used some pretty cheap thermal paste so there is probably some wriggle room for improvement.

It is incredible the longevity of this machine. Its an 8 year old computer that was pretty ordinary when it was new. It has run Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and now Windows 10!

I will keep an eye on things and let you know about the stability in a few weeks.

    Scotty!

Just did an upgrade using a T9300 on my 5315-2698. It is running much cooler than the T7300 I had originally upgraded to. I did a repair for someone recently on a modern HP laptop and this 5315 was still faster than the cheap Celeron in it in everything but graphics.

    Hello World.

My 5315 refuses to die and I am extremerly proud of it, since I am a declared enemy of obsolescence. Every piece of hardware should be like this laptop.

However, although I upgraded it several times through it's lifetime, it is getting laggy.
    Nowadays, it's running a T7250 and 3GB of RAM.
I will put an SSD on it, but I am very intrigued on the posibillity of upgrading the motherboard, so the 3GB and Core2Duo barrier can be overcome.

    Anyone knows anything about this?
Can't seem to find anything clear.

    Thank you.

I change to T9300 and it's very good processor. In other order, aspire 5315/5715Z case it's similar to http://tim.id.au/laptops/acer/aspire 5710 5710g 5310 5310g.pdf but i don't think what exist "better" motherboard for this case...( relation cost/motherboard)

    Hello CosmoHack.

The Acer 5315 is my better halfs daily computer. Just like yours it refuses to die. I agree with tonormal I would go with a super cheap T9300 CPU upgrade and a cheap but reliable SSD. Your SATA 2 bus will be the bottleneck so no point going crazy with the SSD you are better off saving your money.

As for the MB upgrade I too toyed with the idea of doing it but I think in all honesty it would not be economical to do so - at that point you have the ask the question whether it's worth the money noting that modern Skylake/Kaby Lake i3 laptops with a basic setup are quite cheap.. same same if you want to upgrade to a T9500 - people want stupid money for them on eBay..

Still agree with your point about obsolescence - it's pretty criminal how companies like Apple basically engineer their products to become slow and obsolete through 'free' software upgrades..

Anyway I digress - go with the 9300 and the SSD and squeeze that 3GB of RAM into it and it will be just enough to run Windows 10 fairly nicely.

I have to admit that as of 2017 the machines performance with modern multimedia heavy webpages (Facebook etc) is starting to show its age, but for all other basic productivity apps it's still good to go..

    Happy New Year!!

    Scotty

Hi everyone, I just put a T4400 into an aspire 5315 (bios 1.45, 2gb ram) which had a celeron 540 but it freezes while windows loads. I put a second T4400 in and it does the same. If I boot into safe mode then everything seems okay. I tried reinstalling windows but it freezes during setup. I thought the T4400 was compatible? When I put the celeron back in everything works fine.

    Hello Fadsarmy,

I have searched the forums, I cannot see any evidence of anyone else successfully installing (or even trying to install) a Pentium T4400 which is odd because it looks like a Penryn derivative to me.

Page 115 of this thread has a compatibility page and tellingly it does not appear to have the T4400 in it as a compatible CPU.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...ep-upgrade-guide.251959/page-115#post-5362351

Can I suggest that you look at the T8XXX core 2 series? The T8100 (which I used to use on Windows 8 very nicely ) is unbelievably cheap on eBay at the moment - one vendor has them for 5 bucks(!) including free shipping!!! I can definitely vouch the SLAYP chip will work. Otherwise if you can afford it the T9300 which I use is also slightly less bang for buck but still cheap at 20 dollars!

Thanks Darklord. I got the cpu before finding this thread based on a youtube video. It freezes on the windows 7 logo whilst booting which I read happened to someone on here before. Also, it does not allow me to install windows also freezing early during install. The funny thing is the laptop works fine in safe mode. I've just ordered the T8100.

Hi, i just encountered this topic, i know is very old but i have an aspire 5315 which i need to revive, it already works but my sister some time ago "burned" the celeron 530 M and the processor´s temperature is about 65 degrees (celsius) always, so i bought an intel core 2 duo T7500 for the pc, the question is the next, i saw in your message that some people upgraded the RAM to 3gb, You can say how? It would be very interesting because 2gb are ok for this old PC, but 3 would be awesome!

    Thanks in advance!

If I remember correctly the ram trick was to find the correct combothat would take it. So when you have a 2gb stick and the 1gb stuick available you put them on and try to boot, if it doesn work/recognize 3gb ram then swap the sticks and try again and it should work.

I'm trying to find prove of my memories but unsuccessfully so far so I can't confirm 100% that trick would work and you can have 3gb ram in this laptop.
As for the brand - I don't believe it matter but I think 667Mhz is the max you can go, originally the 5315 comes with a 533Mhz RAM I believe.

A lot of guesses in my post, sorry, try to run a search for aspire 5315 threads, you might find something more concrete.

Hi again, last week i asked you for upgrading RAM on the acer aspire 5315, today, my t7500 processor has arrived, the problem is that when i put the microprocessor in the socket and i turn on the pc, this shows the acer screen with F12 and F2 option and later it simply turns off, no matters if i choose entering the BIOS, boot menu or simply let it go with the OS, it turns off, what´s happening here?

BIOS is on version 1.45, the last released by acer.

    Thank you in advance!

EDIT: Problem solved, it seems that the micro processor won´t work if you don´t connect the fan and i had unplugged before assembling all. With the celeron never happened that, but now is all running ok! :D

I've now got 11 of these beauties (13 if you count the busted ones). All running W10 - & 5 with 3.5GB ram & Cameras plus T9300 cpu's - brilliant.
I encouraged my brother in UK to get one several years ago & he's 80 now but still I talked him thru upgrading the memory & cpu & updated to W10.
I have a problem with his machine trying to get an external mike to work in the silver socket on the front. It's not recognised in Device Manager - anyone got any ideas.
I've got plenty of machines to play with here.
    Thanks in advance

Yours must be a bit different from the WalMart specials. They didn't have cameras or microphone jacks. I don't know if anyone ever got a pair of 2 gig RAM sticks to work in that variant. I never could get mine to work with a 1 and a 2 gig so it was stuck with a pair of 1 gig.

Strange - Google acer 5315 Camera or Acer 5315 Audio ports & view hundreds of images showing the two (mike & headphone) sockets & how to update the bezel, cable & camera (there were variants here in OZ without the cameras.
This Thread has loads of comments about running more than 3GB memory also - admittedly you can't use all 4GB unless you're running 64bit - (i DO have 1 running 64 W10 myself) but hardly use it.
Strange how over in the States they never had these variants. - Their loss I expect as they fly with w10 & 3.5GB.
Actually - I've got a 2GB stick I haven't installed yet - I'll double check when I install it if there are any tricks.
May have been the stick itself - Mine is labelled as 2GB PC2-5300 667MHz.

5315-2153 was the WalMart "Doorbuster Special" version that came with a Core Solo Celeron M530, 80 gig HD, DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo, 1 gig RAM and 1280x800 LCD. No camera, card reader, Infrared (was that still a thing at the time?), Bluetooth, microphone. IIRC it probably did have a mic jack, most likely didn't have a line-in. One of the bumps for audio ports was closed.

I put a Core2 Duo T2500 , larger hard drive, 2 gig and a DVD burner in the one I had.

Over here in OZ they had variants of cpu from 1.7 to 2.1 & minimum of 500MB - you could install a bluetooth pci micro card and it had a pci express 54 slot externally accessed (which was useful).
Actually I noticed - ours had the dvd burner combo drive as standard.
I've tried putting an external mike into the jack and get some activity from the green bars but barely audible on replay.
Ah well - my brother will have to record himself on his Iphone instead. - All the best.

The WalMart version had the solder pads for it but didn't have the internal slot installed for anything but WiFi. :( Probably could've installed a WiFi+Bluetooth combo but then would've had to found somewhere for the BT antenna.
It did have the ExpressCard slot, into which i plugged a flush fitting USB 3.0 and eSATA card.

I bought 3 of the USB 3.0 Express cards but ended up not using them - they were the usual push in push out type & whenever you plugged IN a usb cable/device then the card would UN plug itself - really annoying (to me anyway).

I have a 5315-2698 and have an Intel AC-Bluetooth card installed for wifi. The Bluetooth works, just only after you pop the pc out of sleep mode.

Hi, i have read a lot of this thread (thx) for a aspire 5315
    (Celeron CPU 550 @ 2GHz, 2GB RAM and 965 express chipset)

I have successfully flash the BIOS to v1.45 (acer website) for a T8300 "SLAPA" upgrade
All is ok and when the computer restart, he smile to me...

With a black screen (no BIOS screen) just the fan, led and hdd work.
When i roll back with the old CPU, the PC boot fine.

So i don't understand if this CPU are dead, not compatible or what i'm doing wrong ?

    Thanks for your help/support

Since your laptop came with a Merom core CPU, Penryn CPU won't work or it could be a faulty CPU, I would suggest you to get a faster Merom CPU from the link below.

A Penryn will definitely work. I am running a T9300 SLAYY CPU... this forum has lots of people who are also running Penryns in their 5315s!

Don’t think it’s possible unless you want to try and mod your BIOS. That would be pretty dangerous and would have a high chance of failure. Have a look on Google a few people have written about modding the Acer BIOS to enable VT.

It looks like motherboard used in Aspire 5320 is basically that's same like in 5315, 5715 and 5720, at least is that what schematics suggest, so it's just the matter of finding modded bios for 5315 or 5720 cos those are much more popular models/versions of your laptop.
Here You have one (download this file: icl50_1.45_black_edition_40.fd) It's bios from this thread on this forum: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...-and-discussion-was-x920g-vs-9600m-gt.575866/
