Is the Intel Pentium D (Dual Core) suported in the 5315? Or only the Celeron M and the C2D?
-
First, get your lingo straight.
The Pentium D is a desktop processor that's basically two Pentium 4s joined at the hip.
The Pentium Dual-Core is a mobile processor that's basically a slightly weaker Core 2 Duo - your Intel GL960 chipset is compatible with the models starting with T23.
I did a quick eBay check, and found this deal in Ireland: T2390 on the cheap. -
But is it safe buying from there?
Also, is it worth it? I'm not thinking of running games like COD4, or Crysis, etc but older games like Elders Scrolls 3 Morrowing, Phantasy Star Online, etc.
Is the performance gain good enough to buy it? -
Not sure about how safe it is, but the guy's got good feedback, and at that price, why not?
As for the performance boost, it depends on how the games are programmed.
If they're designed to be run on multicore systems, then yes you will definitely benefit. And your operating system would run far smoother, too.
Just checking the system requirements for Morrowind...a 500 MHz Pentium III?! Your Celeron is way more than enough for that.
Ditto for PSO - the recommended is a Pentium 4 1.4 GHz, and since the Celeron is based on the Core 2 Duo, which is clock-for-clock faster than the P4...also not a problem.
I would say not to worry about it if your current Celeron is fast enough. -
That's what i don't understand in my laptopn. It's specs are better than most system reqs of games i used to play in my desktop, yet they don't run well.
I tried both Vista and XP for this matter. -
Well, I can think of two things off the top of my head. One is that the games weren't designed for Vista, and should be run in Windows XP compatibility mode. Right-click on the game's shortcut, then choose the Compatibility tab.
The other is your integrated graphics processor, which may very well be the problem. The X3100 is not exactly known for its gaming prowess.
That being said, Intel does have guides for game compatibility on the GMA X3100 for Vista and XP. -
Still, those games should run okay :|
The Intel GMA X3100 is comparable to what...a Geforce 6600? -
To a GMA 950
Nah j/k....You can probably compare it to a X1200 or a Geforce 6100, I guess. Not sure. I believe the Geforce 6600 is much better.... -
. . .
. . .
. . .
You're kidding, right?
The GeForce Go 6600 may be old, but it's still a dedicated graphics card. And ANY dedicated card is better than an Intel integrated one, bar none.
For example, the 6600 gets a score of 1150 in 3DMark06, and 2800 in 3DMark05 (these are industry-standard benchmarking tools for gaming).
The X3100 only gets a 524 in 3DMark06, and an 808 in 3DMark05. And when running a single core processor like yours, the scores drop even lower.
Of course, there are still ways to boost the performance of the X3100. Make sure you've got a good amount of RAM in your system - the more there is, the more the X3100 can use. Ensure that you've got the latest drivers.
And if all else fails, use software acceleration in whole or part. -
So upgrading my CPU will make a difference? And i mean A difference? lol
-
To a T2390 - minute difference. It will be literally like two celeron cores merged into one (actually not, the architecture is different), but the performance will be almos similar to two celerons working together. I would advise you to get at least a T5250/T5270/T5450....

What Andy said - there's a whole topic here on the Acer forums dedicated to upgrading the 5315 to some semblance of a powerful machine.
-
Okay. Can you link that topic? Thanks!
BTW: My Aspire already has 2GB ram -
Its a STICKY !! Check the 1st 4 threads of the Acer Forum....
-
Ah, THOSE topics lol!
Sorry wasn't getting it.
Thanks -
