BigO, I am going to upgrade my processor to a T7500 here i a couple of weeks, can I update my BIOS now, or should I wait. I have already upgraded my RAM to 2GB. I will eventually add a DVD burner and larger HDD soon. If i can update the BIOS now which version should I use? Thanks for the information by the way, I was going to ditch this and by a new laptop. Not any more.

you can download it at support.acer-euro.com -
Hello all. This is my first post as I joined today. I have read with keen interest all the advice given here so a big "Thank you so much" to all who have contributed and shared through hard effort and sheer perseverance. Through your dedication, I have now gained the confidence to try to upgrade my acer to a t7100 cpu. Sadly I do not have the pink cpu socket alas the gray, so could someone please be so kind as to take the time to advise me on the modification required. I saw that this information isn't generally posted in the forums therefore my email address is available in my profile.
Thanks in advance and best wishes
PS I did update my bios to the new one V1.40 (previously had v1.14 by default) and after flashing correctly my acer would not boot into windows. The acer kept giving the blue screen of death 3/4 the way through boot up. I did successfully restart into safe mode and windows gave the "recovered from serious error" message and upon restart, booting normally it worked fine and has did for the last few days. I had no problems previously with my acer. I just thought I'd share my (lucky?) experience with you all. -
Thanks again, your experience and knowledge is greatly appreciated, I will let you know how it turns out. -
welcome Wobin
Wobin copy and paste all BigO's instructions into your notepad and print them off. he's your man on this one and will help you all the way.
best of luck,

the bios flash properly.. meaning it wompleted w/ no error??
when first powering up press f2 and see if it shows up as 1.40 -
Big O thanks for the upgrade info. Very much appreciated, Sir.
And to the others cheers for making this newbie feel so welcome.
The bios was flashed on my acer from v1.14 to v.1.40 using the windows utility from inside windows. It completed with no errors and shut down the machine instead of restarting it (according to the txt file with the bios download this is normal)
I left it off for a minute then restarted the acer which then it wouldn't boot crashing 3/4 into the boot up with a blue screen of death giving the message "windows has shut down to protect your pc". I tried to boot again to no avail - same thing.
So going into safe mode it booted up ok and gave the message "windows has recovered from serious error". I didn't do anything in safe mode except wait a few minutes then restarted windows normally and it booted up fine and has did since.
On checking the bios it does show v1.40 in there so I know it flashed correctly.
I suspect it was a driver issue perhaps. Rather odd though I think. Fortunately it worked out OK for me. I'm on vacation for a few days more after which I'll post my upgrade efforts in Hoggies fine thread.
Later, Wobin -
you welcome mate.
have a nice couple of days off, see you when you get back -
glad your BIOS flash worked,, it does sound like a driver issue.... maybe try writing down the STOP CODE spit out at the blue screen and then search it in google... you might get an answer to what is causing the prob..
i look forward to hearing about your success -
i just got a 5315, ordered some more ram for it.
my 1.40 bios seems to be working fine, only did it a fiew minutes ago.
from what i've read any of the socket p's work for a cpu upgrade.
(as long as its a pink socket)
mines pink i think :/ more of a purple colour i would call it
would this be suitable ?
http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/74660/CPU_MOBILE/Intel/BX80537T7500.asp
i opened it up yesturday was like woohoo dont have to worry about the thumbtack stuff ... lol
edit: big thanx too the big o too - google directed me here some very good info on the 5315
has anyone tried anything higher than a t7500?
- Heath -
congrats on the pink/purple socket
i think we have have a T8100 confirmed... but i'll have to check
i know the BIOS supports T7700 for sure!!!
EDIT:: FIRST POST CHANGED.... added link to internal WIFI mod to accept external antenna -
i just checked my temp with CPUID hardware monitor. its saying my cpu temp is 21*C.
err what the hell. this must be a error of somekind it cant be that low can it. most people in here have been talking of havin 50* as good.
any other programs i can use to check in windows vista 64 ?
edit - you guys are talking in farenheight.. arent you. just relised ....
damit
- heath -
it doesn't have that problem
but bios ver 1.34 and 1.40 do have issues with temp sensor calibration and a problem w/ COLD BOOT when first starting after being shut off for so much time (7 hrs or more)
*these problems are intermittent and only show up on certain PCs so we are all still confused by the problems*
or you can try RMCLOCK download at
http://cpu.rightmark.org/download/rmclock_235_bin.exe
it reports my temps correctly with BIOS 1.40 -
that CPU would be fine... but you might wanna go W/ either the T7300 to save a bit of cash... or the T8100 or T8300 for more performance
i suggest EBAY,,, buy from a seller that has an EXCELLLENT feedback,, and who has a long history of selling!!!
BUY IT NOW IS ALSO A GOOD OPTION,,, IMO -
-
i feel you should have NO problems with the T8100,, and i know T8300s have been but in other acers with the same CHIPSET the i965
but i don't blame you for being a bit skiddish... somone i saw in another thread bought a T8100 for $130 off of EBAY.... just look for a GOOD BUY IT NOW price -
the t8100 are 244 AUD$ over here so yeh very nice for the price
i might try and find somewhere that have a return policy if it doesnt work but that would push the price up.
but if big o says it'll work good enough for me . haha.
if it doesnt i could always flog it and id only be 50-60 $ out of pocket.
(trys to find the search thread search function on NBR) -
but you do a good search at google and NBR resualts are at top of page -
says on the intel website the only supported processors, are the t7000 series for the gm965 chipset :/ dunno im not a laptop person
oh well im going to get the t8100..
hope it works :-s if anyone has a simmilar lappy or same chipset, with a t8000 series would love to hear from you.
- heath -
that is all that could prevent you at this point,,,, and if we can find an ASPIRE 7720 or 5720 that has a T8100 or T8300 then we will know forsure that the BIOS supports it!
i know the CHIPSET supports it... intel has not updated that i965 data sheet
later,
bigO -
-
that proves that the BIOS and the CHIPSET and the MAINBOARD all support the T8100
please report back w/ results of your upgrade -
Hello folks hope all is well
After browsing around, I ordered my upgrades yesterday which are:
T7100 off ebay $77 including shipping
2gb (2 x 1gb) crucial 5300 off newegg for $50 free shipping (has $16 mail in rebate)
Sony NEC AD-7530B 8x DVD+RW/-RW DL off meritline for $46 free shipping and $6 rebate)
so cost of upgrades after rebates is $151.
I couldn't find a review on the dvd drive on the net so i'm kind of going on a limb on that I do so like the DL option though if it works ok. Does anyone have this drive and can comment?
Never having opened a laptop before is there anything I need to watch out for after getting the cover off (aside from static like in desktops)?
Is the dvd drive easy to swap?
If I get this working ok I would like a bigger hard drive and would like to know is the acer 5315-2153 a standard 2.5" disk and are they easy to install and is there a limit on capacity?
Thanks as always for your time and effort.
Cheers, Wobin -
the DVD drive is ONE screw to take out... and 2 screws to move the mounting bracket on back of the old one to the new one... as far as a optiarc drive,, you should be fine.... i have an older one and love it
the only limit on HDD is the size being manufactured currently.... i would suggest a 320gig 5400RPM == good performance great price... yes the drive is a standard 2.5" SATA drive
see the PIC at the bottom of the FIRST POST in this thread
that should give you an idea how easy this laptop is to upgrade
VERY EASY... even my mom can do it!!!
this link has a good step by step walk thru

good luck mate,
Phil -
definately report back... i wanna know how you like the upgrades!!!
especailly the DVD -
will do probably be this weekend. lol @ thumb tack bandit...I'd make that into a film!
Reminds me a bit of the old 70's 80's cop shows like tj hooker where they'd have class names for the villians such as "surfside strangler" and "marina rapist"..i'm sure BigO's escapades would make for a much better viewing than the mindless schlock that Hollywood churns out every other day...
till next time. Pip Pip!

shameless bump for good info
-
Get my t8100 at the end of the week hopefully
still waiting ... -
bigo can i join the acer unofficial support crew ?
-
-
-
i do know people using 3 gigs... so that makes me believe that 4 gigs is likely.
bigO -
Thanks for the info bigozone, but my question is about if 5315 supports more than 2 GB RAM, that means 2.5, 3 or 4 GB...
Of course, XP x86 don't support more than 3.2 GB RAM, but x64 version of XP and Vista does... and even the Celeron Merom that comes with this machine supports x64...
I know the bad support for x64 versions until today, but with that limitation of 3 GB for 32 bits OS versions means the final migration from x86 to x86-64 software... -
Yep the i965GM chipset can easily support 4GB PC2-5300....!!
After that, it depends upon the OS you have, 32-bit - anywhere between 2.5-3.5gig - depending upon the motherboard, BIOS, GPU, etc. or you can play with the PAE to get the full 4GB functional (which is a very bad idea to start with..) or install Vista SP1 to get the satisfaction of seeing 4GB appear in the System Information Window..
although it doesnt use the full 4GB ram..
64-bit - 4GB or a bit more probably 4.5-5GB, thats the max the i965GM on notebooks can handle..
Still Unsure..?? Run a system scan on www.crucial.com....!! They are correct most of the time.. -
I recently pickup up a new Acer 5315 with the GM965 chipset as a result of reading this thread when a friend asked for help with a 5315 that was taking 15 minutes to boot into Vista!
I've been a compulsive desktop upgrader for many years but have ignored laptops because everything important was soldered in - until recently that is!
I've been trying some upgrades and I wanted to share my experiences. I flashed the BIOS to 1.40 before changing anything.
1) CPUs
I started with a 1.73/533 Celeron. The first change to a T5550 1.8C2D/667 couldn't have been easier. It ran beautifully with no problems of any kind at the higher bus speed.
I have just installed a B0 revision ES version of the T9500/800 and that runs really well, though the fan seems to step up and down very quickly in response to changing loads on the cpu. Whether this is a function of the immature revision or the more intelligent Penryn power management I don't know.
The system is as quiet as before when unloaded or lightly loaded and the extra speed when doing almost anything is well worth it. I'm still running the pre installed Vista Premium SP1 by the way.
2) Memory
The system started with 2 512M 533 modules. I swapped these for 2x667 modules I had lying around and although the system recognised these there didn't seem to much performance benefit.
I next tried some Kingston CL4 modules, 2x2Gb. Although these were recognised by the bios at boot time, Vista would not load with bsod errors of several kinds.
As the system is running so well with its T9500 processor and one of the 2Gb chips I can't be bothered to try installing a scratch XP in the interests of science - yet!
If anyone has worked out how to patch the BIOS for 4Gb do let me know, I'm guessing that the problem lies in the bios memory address data picked up by the OS when loading as the switch from 1 to 2Gb is handled ok, up or down.
3) WiFi next
I don't find I need more than 54M connections, but when there is a possibility of getting a card with b/g/n and a third antenna for the benefits of MIMO resilience in connectivity - that is worth it as it diminishes the likelihood of irritating signal dropouts.
I've got two on the way, an Intel and an Atheros, the latter being more likely to drop in and go as its a similar chipset to the original of course. I'll be keeping fingers crossed.
Happy upgrading -
So you've successfully installed T9500? That's the most impressive upgrade part...
-
congrats on the T9500
the Ram issue will likely need a new bios version to fix..
you should have no problem with either bgn wifif card... i have heard the atheros 5008 has better reception... and when combined with a DLINK n router that is based on the Atheros chipset it will blow the intel away...
but my lack of extra cash has prevented testing that just yet -
Thanks for kind words, but please note that my T9500 is an engineering sample B0 revision from that well known IT supplier ending in 'bay'. I think the shipping T9500s were C0 revision and I don't know what changed between B0 and C0.
I think you are almost certainly right bigozone on the ram addressing, let's hope a new BIOS appears soon.
If anyone from Acer is reading this and thinking how to lock down the 5315 BIOS to prevent cpu or memory upgrades, please remember that you have already sold me a 5315 that you otherwise wouldn't have and my brother is looking for a new laptop and guess what I'm currently planning to recommend! Plus I need to use my orphaned T5550 for something, lol.
Enthusiasts have their uses.

ii have a NEW file you might want -
Thanks BigO, that's very intriguing!

Thanks for the file BigO which I've just tried this morning, having demonstrated yet again that doing these things at 2am leads to silly mistakes
.
Still no joy with loading the pre installed Vista (patched to SP1) with 4Gb of RAM installed, Consistent bsods with a 7E error in pci.sys.
The machine is running happily again on a single 2Gb DIMM.
Curiously the cpu stepping is now being shown by PC Wizard as B1, rather than the B0 of yesterday. I'll load CpuZ later today to see what it says.
