I've attached a CpuZ validated run from a session earlier today to show that the T9500 does indeed work in the 5315.

The bad news for me is that this particular chip is missing the firmware upgrades needed to work properly with Vista's power management so the corresponding services close down and fan management doesn't work as it should.

This means that under heavy load the system dies without warning due to overheating.

Rather amusingly, Prime95 seems unable to max out the cpu - I assume due to memory single channel bandwidth restrictions, running at around 80% load. Still enough to kill the system though.

The chip is now on its way back for a refund and I'll need to keep for looking for a suitably priced alternative :) .

just for S&G try to download I8KFANGUI,,

i know it's for dell's but it was the only thing that would activate the FAN CONTROLS back BEFORE bios ver 1.29 or 1.33 can't recall which

but in XP prior to V1.33 you had to run that prog to prevent over heating

are you able to up the multiplier....?? If so, by how much..??

Buying ESs in the first place is a very bad idea, unless you are ready to play a gamble whether the CPU would ever work properly or not, and even if it works, for how long..!? :)
Best you go for the retail T9500....!!

Thanks for the suggestion, a very neat looking piece of software.

Sadly it is unable to access the fan speed adjustment or cpu temperature sensors in BIOS 1.42/Vista Home Premium.

the software doesn't actually work as intended...
but it does POLL the CPU temp sensors and report it to APCI or what ever controls the fan

just run it for a bit to see if the fan kicks on

I've not tried to tweak the multiplier at all, just dropped the cpu in. The multiplier seemed to automatically vary between 6 and 13x the bus speed of 200MHz for a clock of 1.2-2.6GHz.

I agree with you 100% about ES chips. Had the vendor been honest, he would have told me it was ES and I wouldn't have bought it!

To look on the bright side, I'm now pretty sure the Penryns will work properly in the 5135 and if a certain reputable retailer makes good on a price promise I hope to prove that with a BNIB T9300. :)

There are about 350 reasons why I don't want a retail T9500 at the moment, in pounds that is :D .

Thanks for the tip, it seems to be working!

I have OCCT and Prime95 running together with the cpu at 100% and the memory at 98%.

It lasted less than 2 minutes before crashing before :) .

I'll soak test it for a bit longer although the laptop is not intended to be a processing workhorse!

T8300 should physically fit right no problems. You have to upgrade your BIOS first though. The difference is definitely noticeable :D

If your sound problem is caused by slow performance - yes. If it cause by...let see very fragmented driver or very slow HDD - then no.
It could be a BIOS problem too. If this is the case updating to the newest one will solve it.

    thanx atthegates!

ok - my discs are ok - basically new so dont think defragmenting will make any difference?

am gonna get external 250gb hard drive - will this be faster or same? or perhaps replace 2nd internal 40gb hard drive with larger one?

    many thanx

Yeah so far 1.43 is the latest. If you are going to upgrade your BIOS now don't forget to turn off all the programs which might be running in the background especially antivirus scanners and such.

I have a 1.86 GHZ intel celeron 540 479 pin psocket . i've been looking around this site allot and the t8100 is a 478 pin psocket will that work ? or will i have to do the old heat up the end of a g string from a guitar and attack my processor socket?. Anyone? thnx

WOW i never expected this much information i have been searching all over the internet for the information Bangert pointed me at THANKS A TON to him for doing that helped me SO very much!

    now for question part 2

= i have been doing a bit more research and now discoverd the t8100 has almost a 300$ price tag ive been searching for a more cost effective processor and again refrencing back the the thread bangert sent me i found a t5450 1.66 core 2 duo , i know this is gonna make me sound like a complete jackass

    but

if i were to switch from my stock 1.86 GHz celeron single core to the 1.66 GHz duo i wouldent lose performance due to the fact that it has (technically) 2 cores both running at 1.66? or do i have my head up my on this one? any help is greatly appreciated

You should be able to find a retail T8100 for around $220 if you look around. I bought a used T8300 off ebay about a month or so ago for $180. It's just my opinion but I don't think you should settle for a slower processor even if it is dual core. The T8100 is also more desirable because it is a 45nm chip, so it will also run cooler. It also has more cache for better performance.

FYI: I just did a quick search on ebay and there is at least one used T8100 available on ebay with a buy it now price of $100.

I got a T8100 a month or two ago for just over $200 (might have been $220) at Tiger Direct.

Aspire 5315 has the Intel x3100 which is a huge NO for Fallout 3, it simply refuse to start. I tested the game myself and yeah, at hitting "new game" the game crash. Even if you manage to make it work it will be unplayable for sure.
It's normal the Device Manager to show 2 devices under "Display Adapters" I even had 3 listed once. No SLI, no 2 video cards just your poor x3100 is displayed twice that is all.

there is no way i can upgrade the GPU in a laptop is there? ive heard i can get graphics cards that go in the media expantion bay that could add to my video memory but im unsure on weather this is speculation or not

And refrenceing back to my orginall processor problems most processors ive found have 479 pin p sockets as do the t8100's the pin setup on my core goes to the left the 8100's seem to have a pin missing on the top as oppose to left one mossing in the 1.86 celeron that i have now my girlfriend has a 2.1 GHz dual 479 pin identical pintype to the t8100 and it wont fit either i really dug myself into a hole when i bought this overheated box didden't i lol

i was wrong about that ATG sorry your are right the pin types are the same

ive been worrying this whole time for nothing lol now i just have to crack mine apart again

and as a reply to jared.b

ok here's how i got mine apart Acer 5315 2.13GHz celeron m single core right now

when your flip your laptop over you'll see 4 screw hole's in the panel covering the guts' unscrew all those with a fiarly small phillip's screwdriver and set them aside (make a note where you put them so you dont lose 3 of them like me) now , once that panel is off you should see a heatsynch with 4 screws in it , dont not take those out yet , you have to remove the fan first by of course. unscrewing the 3 little tiny er's holding it in , then take that out gently unplug it and set that aside , now you should see 3 or 4 little tab's comeing off the heatsynch going all allong it, gently pull on those and the heatsynch should pop off the processor and side bus, now slide it, dont tilt, slide it to the right and remove it , perfectly level as to avoid scrapeing the connections or capasiters of your motherboard now you should see your processor all nicely gel'd up and your side bus with a little heat transfer squishy pad thing on it . look on your processor socket for the lock and turn the lock with a tiny flathead screwdriver and badaboom your processor is out and in your hand

hopefully my jumbled rant makes a little bit of sence and can help at all

    hope this helps

    Hi,

    I m just reporting a sucessfull upgrade on a 5315, cpu C2D T8300 bios 1.29...
    my laptops rocks now!!

Michacerboy!! Since i cut your request with post, i will try to answer your question. If i m not wrong pink processors or not isn t really a problem. You can upgrade with cpu such as C2D T7500 (i sell one by the way!!), T8100, T8300, T9300 and T9500 (but those 2 last may required vista).
Do not take everything for granted and wait for confirmation of some expert of this forum....

    salute

    Hey!

I have Acer Aspire 5315. 1Gb DDR2 memory and Celeron 530. What are the upgrade options? Socket 479 processor is this Celeron. I hope, that this laptop support Core/Core 2 Duo.

What laptop processors can be installed?

Thanks and sorry my bad english..

Hiya i am wondering the same thing, i have the same laptop, an acer aspire 5315 with 1GB RAM and an intel celeron 530 @1.73GHz (533FSB & 1MB L2 cache). And I am currently upgrading it as best i can.

So far i have fitted a 320GB hard drive. i am going to fit another 1GB stick of ram, using crucial.com i found that "Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot."

I am also wanting to fit another CPU, i have searched around and found that these processors should work:

    Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T5450 (2M Cache, 1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB)

    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=30787&code=T5450

    And:

    Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T8300 (3M Cache, 2.40 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)

    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=33099

I am thinking the later of the two listed above is the best that would work, as it has a FSB speed of 800MHz, which i have read somewhere is the maximum supported.

I am thinking these upgrades would drastically increase the laptop performance, any help on if whether of these would fit and work would be a great help.

P.S this is my first post on any forum, so sorry if i have made some sort of mistake, (spelling grammar ect.)

you can fit 3GB DDR2 memory on Aspire 5315, one 2GB and one 1GB - just rotate them in slots if the laptop doesn't boot
I already upgraded CPU twice... my first was T5800, and now I have T7300.
Personally, I would choose T8300 if you can afford it...

    also, check out this thread

Ah ok thanks, i have found a 2GB stick of RAM on ebay for £25, just to be sure have you actually tried running the aspire 5315 with 3GB? I am would just like to make sure i am not going to waste my money for something that wont work.

And i have also found this C.P.U.

    Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9100 (12M Cache, 2.26 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)

    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37033&code=Intel%C2%AE+Core%E2%84%A22+Quad+Processor+Q9100+(12M+Cache,+2.26+GHz,+1066+MHz+FSB)

I think this C.P.U. fits the right socket and is the right physical size, the only problem i can find is that the FSB is 1066 MHz, and i know that the 5315 only supports up to 800 MHz, would this mean that it would not work? or would the speed be limited by the laptops FSB? making it pointless to buy such a high spesd processor.

Thanks again for the help, as you can probably guess i am wanting to upgrade it as much as i can, so any more suggestions would be much appreciated. Cheers :D

My home AS5315 has a Core2Duo Merom (65 nm) T7300 processor installed for over a year.
My work AS5315 has a Core2Duo Penryn (45 nm) T8100 installed about the same time.

I don't believe the 960/965 Santa Rosa chipset will support that processor at all, but another problem would be thermal efficiency. The original single-core Celeron 530 or 540 processors had a TDP rating of 30 watts, and that quad-core processor has a TDP rating of 45 watts, 50% higher. Even if the chipset didn't present an issue, the heat output might overrun the original cooling design.

Switching to the T9xxx series of 45 nm C2D Penryn is your best bet. Their TDP is 35 watts, only slightly higher than the original design. The T8xxx chips are significantly less expensive and perform very well in this laptop.
