Last weekend I visited the person who had a 5315 that took 15 minutes to boot into Vista Home Basic.
At the time I cleaned out some of the bloatware, defragged the HD and left them with a 4Gb readyboost usb stick - which speeded things up dramatically (only 5 minutes to boot).
Having found this site and done a bit of experimenting I took along a 5450 and 2Gb of 667 memory to speed things up a bit more at very little cost.
Things couldn't have been easier (see the how to sticky from BigO), and the total time to upgrade the cpu and memory was 15 minutes, including a boot after the memory was installed to make sure it was working ok before installing the new cpu.
Thanks again to everyone for contributing to such an easy to use and informative site.
If you're thinking of upgrading your laptop - now is the time, go for it!!

If they have less than 1GB of RAM, I would have gotten them more ram instead of the 4GB readyboost USB stick. 1GB of SO-DIMM around here is the same price as 4GB USB stick.
Glad to hear that it worked out, though 5min is still ridiculously long. -
i bet it doesn't take over 1.5 mins to boot with the CPU and RAM upgrades
glad to hear you found the info useful
bigO
edit:
i upgraded my mom's laptop in 5 minutes (including the BOOT into VISTA to detect the new CPU) -
I guess it depend on how many times you've done it
I go below 5min
Hey BigO long time no see
-
but if i'm awake... i spend 5 to 10 minutes just poking around "under the hood", i like to look at the shiney solder... and clean the dust out every time i just look at my Kronus screwdriver set..
yeah.. i've been laying low lately.... and have a few things going on around me.... sick relative ect... -
we need to get in touch with Guinness World Records.
just to see if we have set one LoL hahahahahaha -
i think i'm gonna have to start practicing up....
i could use one of those shiney framed certificates on my wall..... might keep me from staring at the SOLDER inside my notebook -
i was booting vista in about 45 seconds with a T5450 and 2gb ram. Of course it wasnt with the factory install of Vista. I found a source and downloaded a Vista ISO and used my cd key and everything was great...but I still find XP to be speedier. Also BigO....new bios works flawlessly so far

This maybe a stupid question but,if you upgrade the cpu do you need to replace the oem memory stick?I'm assuming that the oem is a slower fsb and would not match w/ the new cpu??Just getting ready for upgrade.and any reccomended cpus would be alot of help..
Aspire 5315-2122 -
