Hoping to upgrade my daughters 5315 from a celeron 530 to a core 2 duo. So many pages about doing this but my main question is which processors will it accept. CPUID says its a mPGA478 socket but not sure about the chipset whether 960 or 965. Already upgraded to latest bios 1.45.
    Any advice appreciated.

    Welcome to NBR.

All socket P Meroms and Penryn up to 800Mhz should do. Socket P dualcore (like T2370 for example) should work too.

Read my previous post more carefully please! Any CPU from that list with FSB 1066 will NOT work.

    Some of the CPUs that should work - T7300, T7500, T8100, T8300, T9300 etc....

The following thread contains a lot of information about the CPU upgradeability of Aspire 5315:

As BigOzone's thread shows, your daughter's 5315 will work more effectively by upgrading the ram and the cpu. the stock C550 is very limited in it's functionality. the stock (or at least on mine) 1GB of ram isn't nearly enough and by just replacing that alone you will notice a big difference. the Good thing is that the 5315 is very accessible as for upgrading those go. i had another Acer before and the only thing upgradable was the ram. the processor was buried under everything and you had to tear the computer from the keyboard down to get to it. So that's the good news. the bad news is, she probably only has a 32bit operating system. the operating system (vista 32, xp 32, ect) are limited to only reading and accepting 3 GB ram. the 64 bit versions of the same system can handle 4 GB of ram (as the 5315 only has 2 Ram ports) 4GB ram is the max unless they make a higher DDR2 Ram stick bigger than 2GB that i just don't know about.

If it helps any, I just upgraded my Celeron to a T7300 yesterday and I couldnt be happier.

I also just upgraded my HD to a Hitachi 7k200 7200rpm model, which helps a TON as well.

    Good luck!
