I just got an Acer Aspire 5515-5879 and would like to put a fresh copy of the OS on it without all the bloatware. Anyone know how to get the drivers for this? Acer's site isn't offering any help.
-
-
That's weird, Acer US site has no entry for Aspire 5515. The European site DOES have but it's empty, there is only a BIOS available. And on top of that, this is the first thread about Aspire 5515 in this forum..
Anyways I'd try the Aspire 5510 drivers. -
.
On a side note I just picked this up today at Walmart for my parents to use.
Acer Aspire 5515-5879
Athlon 2650e
15.4 WXGA
3GB DDR2
160GB HDD
DVD-Burner
10/100 Lan
B/G Wireless
Vista Home Basic
for $348 -
Athlon 2650e...hmm eMachines has those CPUs, never heard of Aspire with one of these. This is really strange model
-
-
Did some digging, look like I found where they are stored.
C:\ACER\Preload\Autorun\DRV\
-
Anyone with some Acer experience want to confirm that this is the correct find?
-
Yes, ACER normally put a copy of all the drivers in it's laptops. I forgot it's a brand new and that's why I didn't suggested to look for em somewhere on it.
Normally they are located on D: though, so I guess this is another odd thing for this laptop -
ok, so i pulled a noob and installed a copy of ultimate 64 bit as soon as i got it (and threw in 4gb.) Long story short i already reformatted and there is no drivers anywhere, can anyone make copies and post them or email them?
-
Anyone know how long Acer's driver/download section has been borked? This is my first experience with them and although I am very happy with the quality and speed of the laptop the fact that their site is messed up and has been for a couple days now is a bit disappointing. -
But it ran great with the 4gb of ram when I still had home basic on there for the forst 30 minutes. Overall it is very similar to the Acer Aspire 5570Z i am still using. -
-
.
Any luck on using those drivers? -
How did you get windows on this? I am on my 6th attempt to install vista, I even took the drive out and ran WD tools on the drive to make sure it is ok. Every install attempt I get to "completing installation" and it just sits there for about 30mins until it just freezes.
-
I just bought one of these Aspires at Walmart. I find it strange that there isn't much info on this laptop. Some one previously mentioned that the 2650e cpu was found in Gateway computers. I think it Acer's attempt to piece together spare parts from the company they bought (Gateway) and make some computers. I see they've partitioned the hard drive for Acer programs as an E drive and also a C drive which split up the 160 GB. There is a lot of bogus stuff on it as far as worthless programs. I've been deleting stuff I don't need like Macafee ( I have Webroot ), and the trial version of Office 2007 ( I installed Office pro 2000 ). The games are all demo too and I've been deleting a lot of those. I don't use the computer for games anyway. I question the durability of the DVD/CD drive, which I use alot for burning CD and DVD's. It seems rather cheap. The power adapter gets a little too warm for my liking. Probably because it's so small. But I guess for $348.00, you get what you pay for.
-
Quite pleased with the Aspire 5515-5879 from Walmart
No PCMCIA or Card reader and only 2 USB but the rest is nice
Loaded XP ok after reseting IDE to normal mode in bios
Puppy Linux 3 seems to load and run ok, didnt seem to have a
problem with 64 bit XP boot disk I tried either but that remains
to be tested.
if you want XP drivers
this thread www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2379
has some very good links to find all the drivers needed for the aspire 5515
it appears the right ATI video driver solvers the SM Bus controller problem.
Good Luck -
i have a 5515 and am trying to get the vga to work
-
i am also looking for 100% working xp drivers for aspire 5515 purchased from walmart, various links already mentioned result in nothing for 5515, if someone could provide me some xp drivers, thank you & god bless!
ps. acer website provides no xp device drivers, let alone original vista drivers, very poor support -
I just purchased this laptop as well, installed XP Home and had some difficulty finding drivers. Here are the ones I finally found that worked.
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp
This seemed to be the most difficult driver to find. The ATI website kept claiming I didn't have any compatible hardware for the driver. I found this link and it worked. Select option 2 on this page, display driver only, and it should work.
http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/fo....com&siteid=7117&areaid=2&formid=3394#results
Use this page for the audio drivers, touchpad drivers, and the wireless drivers.
http://www.driversdown.com/drivers/...rk-driver-5.708-Win2000-XP(32-64)_87109.shtml
This is the driver for the ethernet card. Installing these drivers covered everything except something called an SM Bus Controller in device manager.
Hope this helps! -
Also remember to turn off AHCI in the BIOS for XP otherwise BSOD. W.T.# is that for anyway?
-
What do I have to select on that screen for the wireless driver. Your link just brings me to a page that prompts for a model number.
-
don't waste your time on acer site for the 5515!
i've gotten several emails regarding the transaction from vista to xp:
-if you want windows to install properly, you must change the IDE to native in the bios, save the changes, restart with xp disc in, wait for partitions screen, delete all current partitions, & create a new one.
*hopefully you created vista recover discs before you started if you choose to go back to crappy vista, lol!
-you can't just install xp over vista
here is a list of all devices installed in the 5515 with xp drivers (not all needed):

This has to be the most frustrating thing in the world.
Why the hell is ACer so adamant about forcing Vista down our throats? Why is Microsoft so adamant about forcing this always-prompting, non-performing garbage down our throats? I have been all over acers ftp site (tried diffnt models including 5020, 3020, etc) to find either broken zip files, password protected zip files in the case of the 5020, etc. Why is acer even password protecting this file? Are they that adamant about not helping the folks that bought their $350 walmart laptop, or is that the justification for all this decepternet crap? Going through google is no help either. By the time you find a link and go through all the advertisemtents and captchas to download file, I still end up with the yellow splat on my device.
Anyone, please. I think I need the foxconn atheros driver for my acer 5515 with xp on it. How can I make this happen?
Oh and thank, freeheart4sale, I just saw your post after I typed most of mine. I am really grateful in advance for the wireless and audio . -
i am working on links now, patience! lol!
-
I actually just now found one to get the wireless going:
Filename (FYI in case the link goes away after a while):
Acer-Aspire-5735-Foxconn-Atheros-AR5B91-v7.6.0.200-Driver-For-XP_-_www.getpcmemory.com.zip
Link:
http://uploading.com/files/4CRT1KJC....200-Driver-For-XP_-_www.getpcmemo...zip.html
Again, thanks, gotta go to work now. Looking forward to your post and will pick this up tomorrow.
(This is actually a friends laptop. After all this work, I am tempted to get one for myself now) -
I actually had to fix my dell verizon card a while back. Had to make it work with Vista at the time. Card was an older model and dell didn't want to provide a vista driver. However the odm had a vista driver, so I download their driver and had to actually change the pci device ids inside the inf file for it to work.
I am amazed at how much effort these manufactures go through to screw people out of getting the hardware they paid for to stop work in forcing them to "upgrade". -
-
for any of those that own the aspire 5515 & did not create recovery discs to restore laptop back to store bought status, i will help you out if needed per request
-
its kinda security so people don't screw up format, harddrive is formatted into 3 partitions for vista -
Addendum: It is obvious that this offer of $348 may not be as cheap as we thought. After all it was a combo of marketing 101 for Acer & Walmart Photo center..riff with bloat, trial programs, and yet to be discovered anomalies. We paid for this computer, but Microsoft and Acer still own it and you. Oh Yeah, TURN OFF THE Windows UPDATES before you get caught in the 'configuration loop of hell'. And, IF you just happen to register, you will be offered a bonus of a $100 worth of..you guessed it, more junk and trials. Thank you Acer and wallyworld. Duh! we shoulda known.
-
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/949358 HERE is the famous article for those of us who got caught in the UPDATE trap whereby the ONLY recovery was a reboot to factory defaults..losing...everything in the process. Thank you microsoft.
-

i don't think an unsuspecting first time vista user, having been comfortable with XP for many years would even suspect there is such an evil OS such as Vista could Exist, that is, until they start to use it. It should be boycotted, banned as commercial crapola and dragged and quartered through the halls of microsoft. IMO, Windows 95 was probably the last and best of their efforts anyway. Freeheart is right and perhaps that initial restore discs, since not provided @.20 /copy from the vendor, should be done in 'safe mode'...lmao. P.S. I'm perusing the web assembling a consensus for replacement now. Its odd, that acer won't support the installation of another OS, since their own aspire one incorporates it.. Duh! I'm sure laptop sales have plummeted now that the word is fully out. Those who say "vista sux" are far too kind.
-
I picked one of these up last week. They really aren't that bad. A little more expensive then a netbook, but in my opinion you do get more bang for the buck.
Anyway, first thing is to create the recovery DVDs. Which I did and even retored them to ensure they were good.
Boot to the BIOS (press F2 when the system is starting)
Under the Main option, Select SATA Mode, press enter, select IDE native
** Booting with the other option causes a BSOD when installing XP **
Since I'm kinda lazy, I downloaded DriverBase ( www.driverpacks.net) and slipstreamed the drivers into a hugh WinXP SP3 DVD. (Didn't want to due the research and downloading from different manufacturers, like I said, I'm lazy)
It makes installing XP take a bit longer due to decompressing the additional driver sets, but XP installed flawlessly, every driver was picked up and MY system runs perfectly.
Hope this helps -
Hey jasherk.... I just bought this thing also, and am going to try your method.... hope it works, and thanks for the test.
-
Do you have to do the recover thing?
The only reason I can think of is in case you want to return it and I don't think the Walmart employees really check this. Would it be easier to just take out the harddrive, stick it on a shelf and get another one at newegg? Plus, if someone really gets it to where it can't boot, it might send a better message when they get enough of these things returned with XP attempts... ""Hey Microsoft, get a clue, noone wants Vista""
Microsoft didn't fix anything that I and probably most people want. After the novelty of seeing your apps in an exploded 3d view wears off, answering the annoying security popup (yes I know how to disable, not the point), or all this other layered graphical nonsense just to get to your TCP settings wears off, what did they really fix?
Now if they took xp, trimmed out the stupid search dog. Made it default to detail view for files and folders after install, removed hide inactive tray icons, removed desktop cleanup wizard, added no-to-all as well as yes-to-all on the file-copy replace dialog, removed the stupid prompting in the middle of 10G files copied across your network "Are you sure you want to move the read-only thumbs.db", made it default to "best performance" on performance settings, made internet exploiter default to about:blank and do not search from the address bar
then they would have earned my money for "improvement" -
I just bought the 5515 last week and tried to upgrade to Vista Ultimate w/o thinking to make a back-up disk first (brilliant, i know). I was wondering if anyone had the driver links for vista?
-
Is there any other way to use a MOUSE with this dumb laptop....???
It's only got "one" USB port, so the mouse will be using that port.
Dang.... I guess we will have to buy a Multi-USB adapter to use any extra stuff on this laptop, like a flash drive etc.
Oh, and ASUTKEBX, as soon as I can I'll create images of the backup DVD's and the Drivers/Apps DVD and upload them for you.
Unless someone else beats me too it. -
Wow! Such agony over a computer! I haven't switched my wifes computer over to XP, because it's my wifes and she'd freak if I changed anything. This is our first use of vista. I have a problem taking files off her old hard drive that has XP (documents, pictures) and transfering them to the new computer. It gives me some security prompt asking for administrator authorization, and i'm logged on as administrator already. After 3 hoops of jumping, still can't get them transfered. I deleted all the trial games, trial office 2007, and stuff i will never use and loaded office 2000 pro (which works just fine). I don't think I've made a recovery disc. Is it too late to do that since I've been deleteing stuff? Won't shutting off the updates harm the computers performance?
-
Well, first off, hello everybody! I am the proud owner of one of these fine laptops, I thought it looked like a great deal.........haha. Vista is just as I heard, a cluster---- ! My question is is it worth all the work to change the OS to XP, and how much would it cost me to do all the changes, or should I just pack it back up, and run back to WM and return it? I liked the 15.4 screen for $350.00, and I did burn the DVD recovery and appdrv discs off the bat, so I'm ok there, I also subscribed to ATT wireless service for broadband, but I can't connect at all, living in the middle of nowhere, I can't even connect to pull a web page. The ATT is going back, it's crap, but should I keep the laptop, and do the conversion? Help !!!
-
I could use them recovery files please
Thx -
I did the same thing you did , I got all ahead of myself and reformated before making a backup . Anyway you can send me the Vista drivers ??
-
-
I see I might be able to help all of you, let me explain a little further.........
I am doomed to a life of dial-up right now, and a very poor Isp. The recovery discs are 2 DVDs at about 4 gigs each, too large for me to e-mail, as are the appdrv's as well(2 cd's) I would have to send any discs via snail mail. I wouldn't mind doing this, but I am out of blanks right now, and would have to make copies for you all. If you are interested, shoot me an e-mail with your info, and I will send them out to you tomorrow.
I returned the acer today, I just couldn't deal with it any more since I had no way to connect to broadband -
-
I just picked one up. Installing XP. Was shocked when i got blue screen while installing xp. Change to IDE native in bios and now its installing.
Hope I can find all the xp drivers I needed.
Really nice for only $350.
Feels better than the $350 toshiba at bestbuy(tried to get it but all sold out)
I needed something to play warcraft3(dota) and this is perfect for cheap person like me.
Is x1200 faster than intel 4500 ?
I had 3xxx intel vid on my other laptop and it was horrible! -
my email is [email protected] send me the cd's, i'll send you some cash for them and i'll help share the files on a private server when i get them. Thanks
-
hi again everyone, so much love for vista here! lol not!!!
just a little heads up if interested,
i just wanted to let you guys know when your exchanging the recover discs, they will not match up with another laptop as far as warranty(this would not get checked till it reaches the tech if sent out for warranty work) the serial numbers are embedded into the backups! you can change this by extracting all the files from a backup & editing a few files & saving changes, then reburning thru nero like software -
I posted a new thread with the Acer empower software for XP if anyone is interested, for expedience I'll pop em here:
Acer empowering platform v2.3.2026

thanks NoCashBob for the files
one more thing on top of switching to xp for this laptop is the cpu can be upgraded too! not bad huh! go wal-mart, move over best buy! lol!
