    Hi there!

I have an Aspire 5520G and its manual says that it has an infrared port. I see it on the lapptop front panel (on my right) but when I try to send it something (picture, movie, text file) it doesn't work at all. I tried with different devices but the result is one and the same - not workink. My questin here is that: Is that a standart infrared port for communication with external devices or is it only an infrared receiver for the remote controller provided with the laptop? (I don't have the remote controller to test it)

I'm with Windows Vista Home Premium and the device manager says there is an CIR device...

    Help!

    Thanks in advance!

I have the 5920 and I can't get my infrared to work either.
I installed the driver and the device manager says it works.
But I can't find any icon that shows that it's really working and when I tried connecting my palm or cell phone, it doesn't work.

It's probably same version as in my 5920 -- it's called CIR for ConsumerIR.
Thats not ordinary IR receiver. As you alredy noticed it doesn't work with Palm or mobile phone.

Try some "media remote controller" and it will work :)

    Some info about CIR: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumer_IR

Is this "media remote controller" a driver or software? I'm a bit clueless about the topic.

EDIT: I just realised that the controller is a hardware thing. Is there anyway to make the ConsumerIR work with Palm?

I didn't test myself, but afaik all third party remotes that are certified to work with Windows Media Center should work.

About your question -- I'm still trying to figure out how to make IR work with my phone (I have SE w710i and atm I connect via bluetooth; it can work as basic remote controller, too :) )

I was hoping to use the infrared to sync my Palm wireless. I have no use for a controller :p
