I just purchased this model from my local Best Buy, and after having valiantly turned down their $150 set-up fee, I decided to try my hand at making the recover disks myself. Obviously, I failed miserably.

Here's my problem: using the eRecovery program on the laptop, I've tried burning a default factory disk using several types of CD's and DVD's but each time, the program rejects my disks and asks for a blank one. The error code that comes up is Error 0x205. I've looked at the Acer Europe website, but I have not come to any conclusion as to how to fix this problem. My software seems to be up to date but could it be a faulty optical drive?

First confirm if the recovery partition is present.
Control Panel >> Admin Tools >> Computer Management >> Disk Manger
    Make sure it exist.
Next you can try finding the firmware for the DVD RW and flash it.
Google the model of the DVD drive.

DO NOT try anything stupid as that ..

ACER parts has special Bios coding , and only problems can come by messing around , with firmware .

    Are you a noob?
The DVD RW Firmware is brand specific not coded by Acer.
    Firmware != BIOS
The BIOS track the model of the DVD RW but firmware doesn't modify that it modify DVD RW behaviour.
    So the firmware will work.
I have done this on my Acer Aspire 4530.

Hi, firmware or not it shouldn't need it on a new laptop, suggest you contact bestbuy and try to reject it for a replacement..

You are the one , that looks ULTRA noob ..

The ACER Bios it does detection about ACER signed parts ( DVD-RW) ,
    by reading their firmware .

If their are not ( "signed for ACER" in their firmware ) there is boot delay about 30 seconds .

Only ACER can supply "signed for ACER" firmware.

I have flashed the firmware of my laptop's DVD-RW there is no difference in boot time.
Sure the BIOS do check the serial of the parts but Firmware do not modify serial it only modify the hardware code of the DVD Drive.
As long as you match the DVD RW Model it will be ok.
Unless you personally have done it(Like flashing the firmware of the DVD Drive) nothing you say is believable.
There is no "Acer" signed DVD ROM they use OEM DVD Drive like any other Vendor with the part Serial detected by the BIOS.
Firmware updates are to correct hardware initial firmware bugs nothing harmful will be done.
It will not touch the BIOS Boot Block.
Vendor also can't tell if you had done a firmware update.
If this method fails to resolve the issue you can still RMA, they wouldn't know.
