This machine quit after warranty. Took to local shop and, "Sure we can fix it" as most have heard. What a ripoff I got. Anyway, they wiped out the Restore Off the disc and put a plain Vista back.

Like the screwy old man I am, didn't make a copy for future need.

I search for this but only found one entry that didn't answer my need.

Need address and approx cost to go about buying this from Acer. I have nothing on the PC regarding Acer as all was wiped out.

    Thanks in advance,

    Walt

You can get around this problem without paying Acer.
You do have a sticker with your Windows product key at the bottom of the notebook. You can use retail Windows DVD & this product code.
All the drivers that originally came with the notebook are available for download at Acer support site (although it would be better to use more recent versions)

I don't want to sound dumb but I am! Nearly 77 years my next and this PC thing is crowding my gray matter. Don't understand your quote "Retail Windows DVD & this product Code." Product Code found.

Just a little more detail on what you mean by the other. Sorry, I just don't get it. Probably the purchase would be better for me as I'm sure I would screw up. I understand burning disc, installing new OS, etc., but this is a new road for me.

By retail DVD I meant that you don't really need Acer-provided DVD.
You need any Windows Vista DVD that will allow you to install Vista- it may be borrowed or something.
You do have a product key so you will be able to activate the system afterwards (being this is an OEM key it may require activation by phone).

I understand now. Should have before. Big problem is I live in a very rural area and the nearest town is about 8-9 miles, which is full of people that are very greedy. I don't know of anybody that has a generic version, all are Dell, or HP, or Gateway PCs.

I have "nothing" in the way of disc for this Laptop. I know I should have but didn't make a copy like they suggested in literature.

Do you have the address I might request a copy of the original install? It's just about gone again, very cranky about starting, then dropping dead right in the middle of something.

Can't remember when I bought it. Been a good one except for the first problem, (caused by a Grandson). That's when they erased all on the HD and put a generic Version of Vista. I will throw it in the trash before I go back there. And, by the way, they are the only PC repair people within 40 miles of me.

Thanks for your time and guiding me about this. Really appreciate it.
