Can someone put up an iso of the 5670 system cd. Ive talked to acer and twice they've sent me sets of recovery disks. The first time the system cd woudlnt boot (it looked just like a the rest of the recovery cds - no boot info, just image files) and the second set had no recovery disk.

Maybe, I'm missing something here, but what system disk? I received no such disk. I did make a recovery disk, but that's not exactly what I'd call a system disk. However, I am in the process of trying to successfully boot from a USB flash drive using a Pre-installed Environment. MS has one called WinPE. But you can get others online for free, like BartPE. This loads a 32-bit UI along with other goodies for retrieving files from a corrupt OS. Problem is, I can't get my 5672 to recognize my UFD even though it is bootable and has all the proper isos and bin files including a RAM drive setup.

make the CD a an Bootable ISO if it isnt. and not a .bin or .cue iamge file.
I suggest using a trial of nero. -
Talon_Sr and all
My system came with:
1 System CD containing the drivers and driving recovery
2 Recovery CDs (containing a ghosted image of the C-partition)
all with official Acer Part numbers
This combination would allow me to recovery to factory condition (apart from the hidden partition).
Apparently this isn't standard if I understand Talan_SR reaction right.
Actually you don't miss much since the backup DVD will contain about the same (actuall the DVD has a bit more since it alos has the Acer MBR which is missing from the System CD)

Well if the recovery disk I have has the MBR, wouldn't it be specific only to my setup/hardware? Meaning, you couldn't use it anyway. Or would you like to try?

In principle it is linked to your machine, but since the checks during recovery are performed from within a batch file calling a little test executable, there would be ways around this.
After that it would probably still be linked to Acer machines only since it checks for an Acer BIOS signature.
I build a Windows XP pro install CD from the stuff Acer gave me. It allows me to do a fresh windows install with the key at the bottom of the notebook, just like any other windows CD would allow a fresh install.
After installation, when clicking the activation link it nicely states that my windows is already activated. That would most probably be different using it on another machine, in which case the activation site would tell me that the copy isn't valid (but only because I actually registered my copy, and thus I am not the first one to go to the MS site for validation with this particular key).
Please note that all this may be different for other series (than TM810x). According to som recovery (both from backup DVD as well as System CD) checks for the existence of Acer MBR, implyting that both are useless when the MBR is gone (but you can restore the MBR from the backup DVD but not from the System CD); and according to others it still works after putting in a new HD (whichby defintion doesn't have the Acer MBR).
all a bit messy isn't it?

The Aspire I purchased from NewEgg, back in April, {Acer Aspire AS5672WLMi- XP Home Intel Core Duo T2300(1.66GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 1GB 100GB DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 NoteBook - Retail}, started BSOD'ing from various sources. The common factor I found was the noise coming from front left, (high pitched whine, cursor would hour glass, a tap on the bezel would free up the drive and stop the noise of preeminent doom, yet the system would eventually BSOD) Moving forward, I contacted Acer support {having made a DVD set backup} and was walked through trying to boot to the hidden partition using a key sequence {Fn+Alt+tap repeatedly F10 during IPL} This would not work even thought the BIOS had, is configured to Look. So...I saved profiles important to me, formatted, dumped the Acer partition, reinstalled OS, applications, drivers, profiles and waited for ACER. Waited for ACER, Waited for system to fail: to determine if this was hardware issue, or software issue. With all the work I put into restoring the Acer it still BSOD with the precursor HDD whine, here comes the cheeze. Waited for HDD from ACER, all while waiting for Acer to supply the System CD, Restore CD sets, and send me a new HDD. All this has been received albeit, not all at one time, nor did any email originate from Acer support to post status.
The Restore CD set disks 1/4 do not have a booting img. The System CD has contents listed in the text file attached. View attachment 2731
Bottom line.
1. Acer sent Restore CD set first. No documentation showing other items on order or Backorder.
2. My system redo.
3. HDD came second. Dido above.
4. Tried to clone disk to disk (failed,, I’m sure it was my bad)
5. Posted to this forum...
6. Found Acronis True Image Home 9.0 15 day trial. Performed an "entire disk backup" within windows GUI. Saved to a networked computer. Tried several of the most intuitive methods to restore yet ended up succeeding with this:
7. Cracked open the networked Computer I saved the backup to in step 6. And did a Window GUI restore to the new HDD.
8. Double checked my work, pulled over the saved profiles just to be sure my data was intact.
9. Acer System CD arrived. Sorry Acer, not needed now!
10. Shipped back the old HDD.
11. Checked this post for esenex's status.
Comments:
BartPE is an awesome tool. Acronis worked for me and includes a generic PE developed by the master Bart. Laptop has been running for 5 days, had to uninstall and reload only Adobe Pro 7. other than that, nothing unexpected has occurred.
Thanks to the forum and its members for the enthusiasm they contribute
