    Hey all,

For the past few days, I notice the fan screeching. It comes and goes but when it does, it is definitely noticeable.

This fan directly underneath the upper right quadrant of the keyboard. I've opened up the back and confirmed that the sound was coming from that fan.

Any idea how to go about this? The fan is encased in this huge black plastic shell (I believe this is the dust shield [based on what I read in the thread about cooling the 5672]). Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

It seems as thought the bearings in the fan have become defective. You will probably need a new fan if it becomes worse, because it will mean that the component(s) it is cooling, may become too hot, and cause instability. If your notebook is still under warranty, then Acer should be able to repair the problem. If not, you will need to find a new fan and repair it yourself, or ask a shop to do it, if you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself.

My 5672 is making the same fan noise. What did you do to fix it?

The noise comes and goes for me. I just took some compressed air and blew out some dust. Works from time to time.

I'm thinking of taking out the fan and adding some lube (WD40?) to it.

I would like to know how I can detach the fan? After removing the shield and the connection to the motherboard, does the fan just slide off?

It looks like the fan housing is rivited to the cpu & gpu heat sinks. Looking at the pictures in this thread... http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=74516&page=11 (scroll half-way down) you can see some screws in the fan housing. After removing the heat sink, I believe you can access the fan by removing the screws and opening the fan housing. I would advice against WD40, and replace the fan. Make sure to reinstall the heat sink with AS5 as shown in the same thread.

DON'T use WD40. WD40 is a petroleum based lubricant and solvent. It can dissolve some plastics. Use a silicone based spray lubricant available at most auto parts stores.

As a rule of thumb, use WD40 on metal, silicone lubes on plastics and rubber (could also use on metal) and graphite on wood.

You can try the silicone base lube on the fan, it may or may not work depending on whats grinding. It may only work temporarily. It won't hurt to try it, just use a small amount, a little goes a long way.

Any lube would be a temp fix that would ultimately kill the fan. Lubes gather dust and other particles and those particles would lead to more bearing problems. Better to keep those types of bearings dry.

    Thanks for the great info!

I'll definitely try and fix it when I have the time. But for time, the noise is so irritating, I am going to pull the plug on the fan. I'm going to keep the cover open to draw more air in. But I'm curious whether there are any programs that will monitor the temp in the CPU/motherboard?

Programs like Everest and Speedfan will monitor the temperature for you. Be careful with Everest, as on some notebooks it reports the temperature incorrectly. Everest Ultimate Edition reports them fine, but it is a trial version, so some temperatures will be blanked out, except the processor. Also, since its a trial version, it brings up a pop-up near the time, asking you to buy the product. But the programs fine for temporary use.

I unplugged the fan. It ran without a hitch. To compensate, I tilted the laptop to get more airflow and removed the cover.

But, that was a long time ago, now I have a HP Pavilion. Waayyyy better than the Acer.

According to a previous post, the fan is a Sunon Maglev, with the following model and product numbers:
    Sunon Maglev GC056015VH-A, B1913.13.V1.F.GN

    See: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=199196

It goes on to say that finding the fan itself can be difficult, but the entire heatsink assembly can be purchased. The assembly part # 60AA7V7006

Google it and you should be able to find some.

Credit to Krista & Andr3w in the linked post, they did all the leg work to get these part #s

When you get the new fan/heatsink combo, pick up some arctic silver too. Once you take off the old one you'll see why... I suppose the tinfoil is supposed to be some advanced thermal.. thingy... but my sister's laptop ran a lot cooler once I cleaned off the junk and the tinfoil and put on proper thermal goop, though at the time I only had antec silver. She never hears the fan going into the high speed mode the old one did.

the problem is not the fan, it is the fan scraping against the cover, take off the cover and you will see the paint has worn away where the fan has rubbed against it. I recommend a shim made out of something non-conductive inbetween the top fan cover and the base
