I am considering upgrading my original HD in my Aspire 5672.
Any suggestions on what drive I should consider?
I would like at least 200GB to make it worthwhile to do.
Great if I could increase performance as well.

In my 5672 I upgrade from 100GB to 320GB (5400rpm/SATA) samsung without problems. For improve performance I recommend you to think about 7200rpm/SATA I or II disk drive.

If you want good performance the WD Scorpio Black is very fast and quiet and available is sizes up to 320Gb.
I am using a 320Gb at the moment in my 6920G and it gives a WEI score of 5.7, up from the 5.2 of the standard 250Gb disc in the 6920G.
I had previously upgraded the HD in a 5315 (running a T9500ES) to a Hitachi 200Gb 7200rpm and this had delivered a WEI score of 5.5. For comparison purposes I tried the same Hitachi drive in the 6920G (T9300) and it gave the same 5.5 WEI score.
I found one UK store (overclockers.co.uk) with a weekly special on the drive at the time I was looking so I didn't pay a premium for it. -
I upgraded my 5672 to a 250GB WD Scorpio. Works great. The 400 and 500GB versions should be out soon if you can wait.

I am preparing to upgrade for performance first (5400rpm -> 7200rpm) and capacity second (120GB -> 250 or 320GB). It looks like performance increase will be significant with minimal change in power consumption.
After researching manufacturer specs and TomsHardware I've settled on either the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 ST9320421AS 320GB or ST9250421AS 250GB. The Western Digital Scorpio Black was a close second, I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. I think Tom's favored the Scorpio even though the specs I pulled out for comparison place it slightly behind the Momentus.
My acer shipped with the Seagate 5400.2 120GB, I was originally researching the 7200.2 until I realized the 7200.3 existed. Specs are from manufacturer docs unless otherwise noted:
Power consumption:
- 5400.2 - (Tom's: Idle 0.8W, Max 3.30W) Seek 2.2W, Read/Write 1.9W/2.3W, Idle/Standby 0.8W/0.28W

I am going to upgrade my HD and am thinking about the Western Digital WD3200BJKT which is SATA-300. Sounds like it will work OK in my 5672.
Do you have any HD upgrade suggestions. -
WD3200BJKT is good w/FFS.
WD5000BEVT is a good option as well. More space, relatively quieter, similar performance and ~$100.
Hitachi 5K500.B is also going to be released, which will have an insanely low power consumption, so it should be very cool and quiet, with similar performance as well. -
ok its a upgrade so do exactly that upgrade get a hitachi, wd or seagate with 7200rpm 16mbs of cache and sata300 i got mine for $70 at tigerdirect but if you happy with the stock performance but need space get a Samsung HM400LI 400GB SATA its only $93 and it has the same spec`s as the factory one but with 400gb let me make it ease for you(hxxp://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320320658691&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching)

I am a huge Seagate fan. I have had various issues with other HDD's but never a Seagate.
They run quite and seem to have extraordinary reliability (for me).
Plus Seagate have been building HDD's for ever. They know all the reliability and performance engineering "tricks". They wrote the book afterall. -
If I use the restore CD that I created when I originally got my ACER, will it deal with the fact that I have a larger (320GB vs the original 120GB) hard drive? Will it use the entire storage capacity when it creates the sectors?

Great question KSpector, I'm wondering the same thing as well before I order the new drive. The price for the Seagate Momentus 320GB has dropped to $89.99 (free s/h) so I hope to go for the upgrade soon. I hope you get a response or try it yourself before I do...

I actually did the upgrade to my Hard Drive with the Western Digital Black Scorpio 320GB. It is fantastic and was simple to do.
What I did was use the software package called Acronis Migrate Easy. I used the "free trial" version which is free for 15 days so it did not cost me anything. Migrate Easy did expand each "drive" - C and D to accomodate the increased size of the hard drive. It basically recreates your original drive so you do not have to reinstall ANYTHING!
I still have not found out about the ACER recovery disks and if they will do the same thing should I decide to reformat and reinstall the ACER package.
The new disk is 7200RPM and has noticeably increased the speed of my system. PM me if you want more info. -
You have inspired me! Great tip on the software you used, I can read reviews on the net but it's always better to have a first-hand account. I will try the Acer recovery CD I burned before I added anything to my machine to see if it can handle the size difference. If that doesn't work I'll follow your winning formula.

Great. Let me know how it works out going to the larger HD with the recovery approach. Not only was I unsure of how the recovery software would handle the large disk, but reinstalling EVERYTHING is an intimidating thought !! But I know that it is better to reformat and clean off all of the crap that Windows programs puts on the disk everytime you load something.
Keep me posted. I can help you through the "migration" approach if you need. What I did was buy an enclosure for a 2.5" HD and put my new HD in that. After I put the large HD back in my Acer, I put the original ACER HD into the enclosure, so now I have a 120GB HD with a USB 2.0 interface to my laptop....

Samsung 500gb 5400rpm sata 3.0 rocks. I upgraded my Acer 5315-2713 120gb hd with this and it runs better.
I paied $99 two weeks ago. It is a good drive. popped it in reinstalled Vista and I was good to go. -
5400rpm hdd's are TERRIBLE and should be avoided like the plague.

I haven't run any drive benchmarking s/w so I don't know if it would be possible to tell 300 vs 150 from that anyway.
The drive I'm ordering is SATA 300 and will be a significant performance improvement over the OEM drive even if it is only running at 150, just curious. -
Could the SEAGATE MOMENTUS 500GB 7200.4 2,5" 7200RPM 16M G-FORCE be used on this Acer 5672?

The 7200.4 line can absolutely be used in this laptop.
If I didn't already have my new drive I would consider upgrading to this one, it would be worth the extra $$$ to have the lower power consumption this drive offers vs. the 7200.3 line.
Only price I could find was $165 for the non G-Force model, if you can wait 3-6 months the price should drop dramatically. I just purchased a 7200.3 320GB for $89.99 delivered. -

There is no 1TB HDD available at the moment. The chipset can support upto 144 petabytes, but its unknown if the BIOS will support and let you use 1TB of HDD space.
