Well I couldn't help myself with the awesome deal Compusa was having last week on the 5672 for $1299. I figured with the extra money I saved I would really make this an awesome laptop. So I added a core duo T2600 2.16MHz and now this machine is perfect. All in all it took 10 minutes to upgrade the CPU and was actually quite fun. The proc doesn't seem to get any hotter than the 1.66 which is nice, even though the voltage on it is 1.4 instead of 1.3. If you don't need the better screen resolution or any of the other features that the 8204 has this seems to be the way to go. And it only cost me about $1750 when all was said and done.

any pictures? step by steps?
how'd u get the CPU?
oh how i wish i could spend more money... -
This is EXACTLY my way of thinking when I purchased this laptop last week too. Where did you get the 2.16 core duo from, and what was the price? It sounds like $450 by the two dollar amounts you mentioned?
Also, while you were "under the covers", did you spread some good Artic Silver or equiv. compound on the heatsink/heatpipe? And if so, did you do before/after temp comparisons?
Thanks!

No I forgot to take pictures. I was just to excited that I was actually doing it. The process is quite easy though. Bascially remove the screws on the bottom side with the fan. Pop that part off you have to use some force as its kind of locked in there. Once inside you will see the fan, a heat pipe to the graphics chip just to the right of the fan and another heat pipe below the fan where is the proc and that goes over to the right over the chipset. You then remove the screws. One for the chipset then 4 for the proc, one around the fan and 2 over the x1400. Then you have to pull out the power to the fan. You then slide the whole assembly away from the edge of the case where the fan blows out and gently pop it up. Then you just turn the screw on the zif socket which you have to do kind of hard then replace the chip and turn the zif socket screw back to where it was. Put everything back and you are good to go. No I didn't put any paste on the proc in case I had an issue I didn't want to mess it all up. The temps are about 50C under high load which I think is quite cool for a chip running so fast. The proc was bought at zipzoomfly for $446.

Man, $446 is a pretty good deal... some idiot on eBay is selling the T2500 (dual 2.0) dor $495, and the T2600 you just bought for $745!!
I had no idea ZZF had them already... may have to get one in another month or two.
Thanks,
Brian -
Zipzoomfly now has the T2600 at $669. The T2500 at $416. If I buy the 5672 I think the T2500 is the way I will go.

um, can i ask how u removed the bottom cover? i took out all the screws once, but i didnt' know how to pop the cover off.

Do you have any benchmarks on it (before and after the upgrade)?
-
How would you guys rate ZZF? They've got the 5670 marked for 1379.99$ That's pretty impressive pricing...
are they reliable in terms of sales and order fulfillment?
PS: I'm new to online shopping! :-s
Thanks in advance... -

Ooh now I realised that the processor would be socket based, but what about the x1400 is that an mxm card?
I am itching to play ,but feel I must wait for the warranty to expire -
Yeah, I'm interested in finding out about the graphics card too... the specs say it is pci express, but is it in a slot or socket or is it soldered onto the MB?

I think that the card is soldered on in the 5672, since in the description Betaman says that the card is off to the right of the fan, most mxm cards sit under the fan, so they can line up with a slot on the mainboard, so in the first instance it sounds like we're stuck with the x1400, never mind I am sure driver improvements and o/c will give us a little more oomph there, plus this laptop is so thin and stylish, that I might have been expecting a little too much with upgradeable graphics, although the new www.rockdirect.co.uk SLI laptop from these guys doesnt look that thick!!!
here's hoping there is an upgrade tho eh? -
Here's a photo of the inside of a 5672 that I used for another thread. Maybe someone can mark what's what.

Ok bottom just under the fan, is the processor you can tell that its in an mPGA Socket, the little screw replaces what would be the lever in normal sockets.
The chip immediately to the right of it, must be the Northbridge chip as they often require cooling
Now normally from other laptops I have seen MXM cards mounted underneath the fan in pictures on the web but to the Right of the fan it appears that the gpu could be occupying that space as just above that (just under the plugin wireless card) there is what looks like a memory chip which would be part of the native ram for the gfx card.
From that prognosis I would speculate that we cannot upgrade our graphics.
however we will be able to install better drivers in the future and possibly overclock the gfx card maybe with more expensive looking heatpipes?
I would love for someone to take the cooling system off ! -
Check out Buy.com and pagecomputers.com.. they have it cheaper

Bought mine from newegg for 1199.00...a pretty good deal.

Got mine from Newegg as well.
