The Acer Aspire 5672 seems to have the one of the slowest Mobility X1400 cards compared to its comepetitors (eg: Toshiba Satellite A100). Whereas the X1400 is known to achieve ~2000 with 3DMark 2005, the Acer only barely achieves 16xx at 1615.

Acer 5672 owners, if you've by any chance ran 3DMark 2005, care to prove me wrong? Something tells me it's a driver issue. ;)

    Thanks!

I also got 1624ish on standard drivers, upped to 1715 using Omega drivers, but there is surely a slowdown somewhere. Frustrating for a pretty decent card.
So I want to know too ;)

In case it helps, I've just bought an Aspire 5672. With everything as set on arrival I downloaded 3dmark05 and got a score of 1658.

If anyone does find a way to get more - or upgrade the GPU with a faster one then I'd be very interested!

Just installed the latest build of Powerstrip, which recognised the X1400 card and gave full functionality, accelerated both the clock speed and memory speed to 574MHZ, and 441MHZ respectively, and got 2116 :D . System seems totally stable, so far...The power is in there. :)

So now off to give entechtaiwan.com some $29.95, I guess.

That sounds very impressive! I've not seen Powerstrip before - was it difficult to set up? Were those the only settings you had to change?

Powerstrip is easy to set-up, just move a couple of sliders to your desired clock/memory speeds. Then, ideally, save the profiles for quick changes from the tool tray.
I pushed it til it crashed the GPU, so the figures that I put are the max that can be achieved by stable over-clocking IMHO.
But of course, just because I managed to keep the system working for a few hours when over-clocked doesn't mean that it is good for the GPU and GPU ram. I set some intermediate speeds which still gave 1900 in 3DMark05, and are probably safer in the long run. Experiment with it and you will see how much extra there is and how much you need.
Ironically, I don't play games, I just wanted to see how much it could be "pushed". That's just me. ;)
Edit: I used the trial version from their website, gives full 14 day functionality, so no loss to try it out. I have used it before on a previous laptop, and it is a program with a great history of stability and good development, so I didn't hesitate to give it a try. Beware: If you are a bittorrent user, there are cracked versions around - *they do not give full functionality*. :p If I decide that I need it, I think that the price is fair.

if its just overclocking the GPU then there is also that free prog called ATI Tool. altho, last time i checked it didn't support the x1400, only x1300 and x1600, which i thought was really weird.

i'm definitely going to get a clocking program, so i can over/underclock the gpu.

    hi...

PowerStrip has been around for AGES! I remember I used to use it for my S3 Virge graphics chipset (which used to come with 2MB RAM) lol...

So you can imagine how far back this utility has been available... IMHO, I think I had used it in 1995-6 or something.

It was VERY stable then, and I'm currently using it to overclock my ATI Radeion Xpress 200m graphics chip... It's definitely reliable!

    Hope this was helpful!

nice tip. i just uped my 3dmark score from 1634 to 2099. i put my settings the same as intensecure's and it gave me a nice boost in performance in quake 4. im waitng for the dual core pacth tho, too. i think if you set it above intensecures settings it will not work, wasnt working for me ne ways. one question, if you over clock your system wont it damage the internal components after a while? wats the consiquences of over clocking basically?

Sure enough, just ran 3DMark05 on my new 5672 and got a even 1630. Man, I want to see some numbers at least in the 1800-1900 range!

Possible consequences? Cooking your GPU, frying your RAM, over-heating and damaging any circuitry nearby in the case.
Maybe Acer left it running "slow" deliberately - this is not a "cool" laptop! ;)
I just pushed it for fun - won't leave it like that. But a mild over-clock shouldn't be too dangerous.

Same here, when the X1400 is supported I will use that. Frankly I was surprised (pleasantly) to find that Powerstrip already has support since the last, December, build.
But as you note, one is free, one is not! :D

    oc'd using pstrip beta

3dmark06 won't run with higher overclock, screen goes black...note the resolution is 1280*800

edit....anyone know how to configure hyper memory so i can set vid card to use another 128?

they really need a better bios.

    very fast machine though

Are people suggesting that Acer underclocked the x1400?

x1400 is usually same core clock but can be paired with different memory modules, so other laptops may have faster ram, hence faster scores. also resolution makes a difference.

i reran 3dmark06 using an external crt monitor and got 810 .thats the number to compare to all the desktop parts, since resolution changes to the "default" of 1280*1024. thats was oc to 500/400 which seems to be stable run after run

i could not achieve as high of an oc with external monitor.
it would be interesting to tweak with the hypermemory settings but overclocked or not the numbers are about right
this card is 1 "quad", 2 vertex shaders. x1600 is 3 quads with 5 vertex shaders with higher clock and faster ram.
