Hello I am new to the forum and I apologise if this problem has already been posted by someone else but there doesn't seem to be a search function available for me to check. Anyway, I have the above laptop and have noticed within the past few months that my wireless internet browsing has slowed significantly. I know there could be any number of reasons for this but I have ruled out some of those hopefully. I have checked with my ISP, Virgin Media and they say that my cable modem is working fine. I have also checked with my router manufacturer Netgear and gone through various setup options, none of which seem to work. Finally I have even tried disabling the firewall on my laptop to see if that improved things and it doesn't seem to make much difference.

So I am assuming it may be something to do with the wireless part of my laptop although I am not a 100% convinced of this and thought maybe someone on the forum has had a similar issue and may be able to help. I am using the Firefox browser mainly, although the same slow browsing speed also effects Internet Explorer. The slow speed seems to become worse when I am using the tabbed browsing feature of Firefox and when I try to open say 2 or 3 tabbed links then it can take ages before they actually load and more often than not, they don't and I have to refresh the page. Searching using Google can also be incredibly slow and result in the page not loading and requiring me to refresh the page.

I have no idea why I am experiencing this problem all of a sudden but I can use the internet perfectly fine on my Nintendo Wii although that does use the Opera browser. Sorry for the long post but I thought it best to try to explain the problem with as much detail as possible. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Thanks for your reply hoggie, I think I have solved the problem now. I uninstalled the Virgin Media PC Guard firewall/anti-virus software and have replaced it with ESET NOD 32 Smart Security Suite and it has instantly solved the slow page loading times. After reading other forums about the PC Guard software, it became clear that nearly everyone who had used it had advised against it and had similar problems to me.

I'm glad that I have finally got this resolved and it turned out that it was nothing to do with my laptop's wi-fi which was good news.

Thanks again for the links, that cable forum has now been added to my favourites.

i used the pc guard for about two weeks.
and its worse than nortans, its a memory hog.
if you have a router with a hard wired firewall you don't need a software firewall switched on use the wep/wap and mac filter as well and thats all you need.
I haven't had the firewall switched on for ages on my laptops and had no trouble what so ever.
just run a netstat in cmd and you can see what is going on with your connection.

Cable forum is a great place to find out what is going on with Virgin media.
    All the Best,
    Phil :D

PS. make sure you only have one firewall running, as two running is worse than none
