I removed the hard drive cover on my new Aspire 5740-6478 and there is an unused, open bay in there, next to the hard drive, for some component. Anyone know what it is?

I think it's probably for another hard drive. Not sure though.

if you are talking about the halfbay closer to the front thats a mini-pci-e slot and not sata if im not mistaken(i'll take mine apart later to check). I'm theorizing here but you could probably install a wwan card or more likely the bluetooth module here

sorry been playing with a new laptop :p

it is a mini-pci-e(in my machine in anycase) looks like it'll take another fullsize wifi, bluetooth module, or wwan module. my best guess is that its for bluetooth since the acer driver page for this laptop has bluetooth drivers.

It's possible that it is for BT but then again BT usually has different connector- not the mPCI-Ex while 3G card would require mPCI-Ex and drivers for it are on Acer Support website.
It's a good news-bad news situation. Good news is you can upgrade with basically whatever you want- there are i.e. mPCI-Ex SSD drives (OCZ) so you could possibly keep two HDDs. Bad news is this connector is probably not meant for BT which would mean- BT button wouldn't work if a card was in that slot and in order to install BT- where it should be- you would have to partially disassemble the laptop.

yea i thought about it and i've decided its for wwan. I took apart random laptops since then and each one has this same extra bay(connector) which says wwan inside the bay itself(on other laptops)

Still I'd like to know where BT connector is. Service Manual would be useful. Broadcom BT modules are very cheap (some $15-$20) and easy to get online so I'm considering an upgrade however I don't really want to take apart a new laptop.

I don't know if this is still interesting but I bought a bluetooth modul (something like this) early this year a month after I got my 5740G-434G32Mn.
The Bluetooh Connector is near to the front. Used a tweezer to connect to module to the notebook because I doesn't want to take the whole case apart. the activate-bluetooth button on the front next to the activate-wlan button works like a charm.
