I've been getting power issues and faults with my laptop.
- I have to have the power cord plugged in to have a chance of switching the laptop on.
- I can not turn it on unless I repeatedly try the power button for a minute or so, sometimes removing the power cord and placing it back in the socket helps. Sometimes not!

- When I shut down the laptop (from the Windows Vista OS) once the screen goes black, the fan and power LED remain on. (I have to hold down the power button for several seconds to fully power it down.)
- The laptop fails to keep the correct time, coming out of sync within an hour sometimes. After power on, from a shutdown, the time is always defaulted to 01:00 26 April 2007.
- My network connection (tried both wired and wireless) periodically drops out.
- My USB2.0 ports drivers can not be loaded, so all USB sockets on the laptop are slow.
I thought the main battery was the problem but I bought a replacement 8-cell battery and am still getting the same problems. Is there a small backup battery that the laptop should have. I could not find anything in the manuals, and internet searches just return replacement main batteries for sale.Any help much appreciated.
-
There should be a CMOS battery somewhere which controls that. I can't tell you where it's located though, I've no idea.
It's a very small battery, like one for a hand watch or similar. -
Can't seem to find anything about it online, and I'm a bit nervous of poking around inside the machine when it is behaving so strange. Does anybody know of such a thing? I've found CMOS batteries for sale for other Acer machines, but not this particular laptop.

OMG! I just realised that the a problem I have been having with the system clock (once set from its default 2007 date after a boot up) is actually worse than first thought! Initially I thought the clock was just being slow. After about an hour I could lose 20 mins or more behind the real time.
Now I realise it is actually going backwards at times! ???
My laptop is really screwed up and I haven't had it that long (just over a year!) What's this all about?
The Battery is not at fault (I replaced it with a new one which works fine - charges OK and discharges fine over a few hours of normal use.
Is there a CMOS battery? Still haven't found it!
Bad electronics? I have a suspicion about the power board, but I know nothing about it. It looks easy enough to replace but can not confirm it is faulty.
I can not keep a network connection for very long at all now. I'll investigate further and let you know if I find anything... -
Well Acer Support prove no help at all - unless I pay an upfront fee £51.99* (GBP) just to look at the laptop before assessing the costs for parts and repair. OK this is probably standard for any company offering repair services, but if this is a common problem (maybe it isn't but it certainly sounds like the CMOS chip is not being powered by the CMOS battery which can not be that uncommon) then why can't they just tell me that? Then I can open the laptop and repair it myself and save a fortune!
There's no way I'm going to spend the money they will ask on this laptop - if I spend anything I'll just go and buy a new laptop instead, almost certainly not an Acer now!

"£51.99 will cover the engineer and couriers fees"
"We can not give estimates of repair costs, under any circumstances, without the machine being diagnosed by an Acer technician" -
Hi there,
I also have the Aspire 5920, and was having problems with the clock resetting to 26 April 2007.
I found the service manual for the 5920 online, and you seriously have to take the whole laptop apart to reach it >_<
Replaced the battery with an almost identical battery (ML1220 with a CR1220)
But still the clock will reset....
Maybe I did something wrong with attaching the cmos battery, will look into that later... -
I noticed that the battery is connected by a wire, you sure that is connected properly? -
-
) of the subwoofer. To reach it you have to fully disassemble the laptop>
(The motherboard litterally has to be detached from the plastic casing) -
Please do not hyjack open threads even if they are related. Please make a new thread and link to it, it saves in the confusion.
I hate the "Hi I also have XXXXXXXX, can you please help me" threads.
Sorry... Wednesday morning rant. -
i have the same problems since a while
i can't remember when it started but i have the notebook also a year,
i have the aspire 5920G - 5a3g25mi
and i can't find anything about the problem on google except this forum (glad that i have found someone whit the same problem maybe we can solve the problem)
i opened the aspire 2 and i have searched for a little time but still cant find that cmos battery.
i have now windows 7 but the problems started on vista, i have tryd to flash the bios but it still doesn't flash it cuz errors or something, and i have actually already the new bios...
i have upgraded my hdd to a samsung 500gb.
so now we know that but we still haven't solved the problem.
do you have actually the same version of the aspire 5920g?
maybe only that version has the problems. -
I do have a 'solution' for the powering on function.
(Laptop has to be connected with the power chord, works slighty better)
Press and hold the power button
While holding the power button, press on the left side of the right mousebutton-pad (till you hear a second click, which actually is the rightbutton off that middle thingy)
Hold these and the laptop will turn on in a second or 2
I've been using this 'technique' for some time now, works great
@Henkspank:
Like I said in a previous post, you have to disassemble the laptop completely (Motherboard will have to be detached from the plastic casing to reach the CMOS battery) -
the technique doesn't work with my lap xD
i have to first insert the power cord an close and open the laptop a few times and pres the powerbutton but i hope it wouldn't be a problem anymore if i have my lap back
thanks for reply -
wow, I am sure that it's not just me that is having this problem.
my way of workaround for this problem is closing the lid and opening rapidly until the laptop turns on.
for what I know so far, the problem doesn't seem to be the CMOS battery. (because in fact, the time will move even though there's no battery but for my problem the time just literally 'hangs' there). there might be a defect in one of the components due to heat which I don't know what. -
I told them the problems and if I had to replace the cmos battery but they said "no". the clock must be on 00.00.00 if it was the cmos battery at least that was what they said.
the method close/opening the lid works also for fine me
still no idea which of the components can be defect I haven't warranty so it's not going to be fun for me at all I think -

Below is a service manual for the 5920G it might be of use.
look at page 85 for location of the bios battery.

but according to the disassemble diagram, to reach the CMOS battery would be hell. the need of removing so many parts to reach the battery is ridiculous.
and well, the worse thing is my 5920g died yesterday, it couldn't power on. -
Just a quick question for all the Aspire 5920 users:
Do you guys also have problems with USB 2.0?
When I boot up my laptop and I connect an USB 2.0 device it always show the message "This device can work faster on a 2.0 connection, blah blah blah"
In Windows 7 I can start troubleshoot and it'll reinstall my USB drivers, after which the problem is fixed. (Device works at 2.0 speed again)
Problem is, every time after the laptop has been shut down, this problem occurs again.
I just love my Acer >_< -

*sorry for bad english
a time a go i brought my 5920G to the shop where i bought it,
i told them that i had trouble whit it, i told them about everything: the usb, power on/of problem, wifi problem everything.
my warranty was already expired but thank god they helped me.
a week a go they called me and they said my laptop was repaired.
i went to the shop and i asked them what they have done to get it alive:
they send my 5920G to acer and acer fixed it.
they replaced something in the touch pad cable and the hdd or something
not what i expected but the laptop is repaired i have it now here @ home and it's still working no trouble whit it anymore
also unbelievable that they repaired everything for free i didn't pay anything.
it was repaired in 6 weeks.
so,
what they did to solve this problem i think you guys have to do that 2
try put in a different hdd and check your touchpad cable also if it seems that you have no problems with your touchpad or hdd (cuz i didn't had trouble with it 2)
good luck
