I have had an aspire 5920 notebook for about 2 months now and for some reason the media keys on the right of the keyboard have stopped working. I was wondering if anyone knows how to re enable them without having to recover the system to restore it to its factory settings and wipe everything, which I really dont want to do :( .

    can anyone please help? :)

You should have gotten a drivers and utilities disc that came with the laptop. The Synaptic Touchpad driver should be on that. Also, the Acer Launch Manager should also be on there and should also probably be reinstalled to get those buttons working again. I'd remove the Synaptic drivers from the Mouse section of Control Panel and remove the Launch Manager from Add/Remove programs, then reinstall both those from the drivers disc or from Acer's website. I agree with the above. Launch manager is usually responsible for the media/ shortcut keys working on Acer notebooks. Not quite sure what the touchpad has to do with it though.
As for driver disk, or utilities, I had none with mine unlike my previous Acer notebook.

Thank you for your help, I did not get any disks with my notebook either. I managed to download launch manager from the acer website and this has solved my problem. I have to say the acer customer support people were not very helpful, I got more help from this forum than I did from them, as their solution was to 'recover the system so that it is restored to its factory settings'!
