Allow me to introduce myself as a newbie - I do fix laptops for folks so not totally ignorant - although may shoot myself in the foot!

    A client has acquired the aspire 5920 with Vispa Home Premium - a reasonable spec with T57750/3gb ram/ 160gb hdd/intel bg3945abg wireless.

Problem: item has problem connecting to Linksys wag160n (latest firmware 1.00.9) - if I take it 2mtrs closer to router it connects okay, and stays okay when I move back - reports signal strength as excellent at all times. I have tried changing the channel which has improved matters but is still touch and go.

I have been to the Acer website for the 3920 and the wireless adapter isn't even listed!!

Having learnt the hard way from Packard Bells, I am loathe to use the Intel website/drivers in case Acer are using special options.

Anyone else updated the BG3945abg from Intel successfully - the laptop came with version 11.5.0.34 (31/10/07),

Advice appreciated as I am dealing with a difficult user who expects me to know it all!

The drivers from the intel site work just fine. There is nothing special with hte wireless cards acer uses in the 5920.

You might wanna remove the acer software and use vista's wireless software to manage the wireless stuff. Acers wireless manager kinda sucks.

If that doesn't work out, try it with a different router. If that also doesn't work, the wirelss card in the acer might be defective. Either replace it yourself (it's a mini pci card which is fairly easy to replace) or if there is still warranty, send the notebook back to acer.

    Regards,

    M.

Thanks for the info - good to know that taking the drivers from Intel works for the Aspire 5920. Will also try your suggestions should upping the intel drivers not improve things.
