hey guys !! im getting very frustrated with this problem cuz i cant achieve a write speed of even 20mb !! from an external usb2 HD !??
does this seem right to u ?
it even dropped to 4mb !
do u guys think that i have some kind of problem with my harddisk or its just write caching screwing things up plus my disk status LED never seems to take a rest ...

Try going to the intel manager and enable the write back cache...

It's the same for intel raid - you have to open the matrix storage manager, go to advanced mode and rclick your array (probably hdd in this case).

    >i can enable mine, but when i go back its off again

Yep, just noticed that... Same here. After i selected it, i went back into it and it was off again. Oh well... So much for that one. Maybe HP will have a firmware fix for it like they one they have for the HD-DVD!!

I saw in microsoft support site that windows 2000 and XP had some performance issue regarding write cache and later they had released an update. So this also may be from the OS part.

Does enabling write cache increases perfomance a lot in a laptop?

i can enable mine but i do clean install vista home premium. after you install vista enable it before you install any driver. and don't install intel matrix manager. hope this will help.

So it mean you're in SATA IDE Mode instead of NATIVE SATA AHCI Mode.

Well he must be in SATA IDE Mode, that's why he did't install intel matrix manage. It's the only way to enable write cache. Yo can also change this option in BIOS but Intel Turbo memory will stop working.

    >Yo can also change this option in BIOS but Intel Turbo memory will stop working.

hi.. my Best Buy 5920G doesn't have the Intel Turbo memory, and i can't add it because the connector is not on the board. So... I'd be in a good position to use the write cache.. Exactly what/where has to be changed in the BIOS to enable it.. And will having write cache on have an effect on the Vista Rating or benckmarking? Thanks..

Just change Sata Mde from AHIC to IDE and try to uninstall Intel matrix drivers, and restart laptop. If You don't have AHIC driver installed in Your Hardware manager it means that You can enable Write cache. I do it once and it worked for me but I use ITM and I must have AHIC in bios enabled.

I reformated like 5 times to try ad resolve this issue. All i can confirm is that i not related to the robson drivers as far as i see. After fresh install i checked the option and it was still unavailable :((

I have a T61 which has turbo memory. Vista 64, latest lenovo drivers. I am able to enable write caching.

I have not enabled "advanced performance" though which is the one that is sensitive to power loss.
