As of a couple days ago, my optical drive in my laptop stopped being recognized. It's a Toshiba TS-L802a, the drive that shipped with the notebook. Device manager shows the "!" icon next to the drive and states in the device status: "This device cannot start. (Code 10) Click "Check for solutions" to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

I've clicked the "Check for solutions" button and had no results. (Click, computer sends some data, nothing happens)

I tried "reseating" the optical drive. No response. The drive is getting power and will spin up when a disc is placed in it. The only software that was installed recently was Print Shop 22, which should be totally unrelated.

I generally use the laptop for gaming and DVD Burning, as far as I know, it hasn't undergone any trauma.

Any suggestions? I've submitted my case to Acer, but figured I would bounce it off the brains here.

    Thanks!

First test: Does the BIOS info list the optical drive. If so,

Second test: Find your Windows installation / recovery disc and see if you can boot from it.

If the answer to one or both of these is no, then it's a hardware problem. If you can boot from a disc in the optical drive then its a software problem.

Actually, I did a little more searching before reading your response and found this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

The upperfilters registry entry was there, so I deleted it as instructed. The lowerfilters entry wasn't. I rebooted and VIOLA! It was like cookies and pie were placed right in front of me! It worked.

Thanks for the really quick response, John. Your awesomeness is appreciated. :)
