Hi Folks, im new to these forums but was pointed in this direction after a google search. So hoping someone may be able to shed some light on this issue.
So last night the fan on my aspire 6920g started making a wierd noise, (i do try to keep all vents and exhaust as dustfree as possible) I Then proceeded to open the back cover and carefully remove the fan and while the fan itself looked clean/dustfree the actual grill where the fan attatches at the exhaust was really grubby and the dust was caked on there...I removeed the dust and sprayed some compressed air around (to make sure none got to other components.
I then reseated the fan and screws, powered up the notebook and the difference was night and day and it is just so quiet now...even the speakers sound better lol. So all good i hear you say![]()
The problem i have now is that my CPU temps seem very eratic. Before the cleanout i was idleing at around the 30c mark but now i seem to be in some sort of Loop/Cycle where my temps wont register any higher than 35c (at load) then the fan kicks in and the temp drops to 19c...Fan goes off and istantly creeps back to 35c....and so on like this. So my fan is comming on every 2-3 mins or so to drop the temp back to 19c.
This happens even when the laptop is just sitting doing nothing with no programes open. ie' Idle.
Sorry if im confusing matters but its hard to explain.
I am using RMClock along with HWMonitor to measure temps and they both show around the same. I also ran Orthos for 40 mins and the temp only got to 43c max which i though pretty low on blend test
So far my notebook seems to be running smoothly but i am concerned about the cycle of fluctuating cpu temperatures as there now seems to be NO IDLE temp as an average(always between 19-35c). Also the fan every 2 minutes is begining to wind me up
So sorry folks for the long post but im just hoping anyone can convince if its good, bad or even just ok.
ok thats me finished now...Promise

Welcome to the forums, con100!
Sorry to hear things with your 6920G have been going wonky. The fan's been making an odd noise on my machine too, so I think a replacement will soon be in order.
Can't say I've heard of an instance where the fan temperature's are going wonky like that. It almost sounds like the thermal diode on the CPU got damaged somehow. Try a few other CPU temperature monitoring tools to make sure that the system is misreading the temperatures, then run through the usual due diligence - rule out a Windows problem, possibly try a different CPU altogether, etc. -
Thank you Tehsuigi for your response. Can you recomend a temp monitor i used RealTemp last night and it showed slightly higher overall temperatures but the rise and drop cycle is still ocurring every few minutes.
I tried a virus scan, also a performance and stability test (within Vista) which both showed nothing to be an issue. I Also defragmented the hard drive...just to be sure.
Finally i flashed my BIOS from v1.16 back to 1.14 (from Acers site) Still the same thing is happening.
Tehsuigi i am interested in your theory that some diode within the cpu may have got damaged, Is there a way of checking the diodes? I Also considered maybe the thermal paste may need replaced as although the laptop is NOT overheating as such....It is like it is TRYING to overheat but the fan is working all the time to keep it in check. There just seems to be NO Idle temp value anymore (If that makes any sense lol)
It now feels like i can count in my head to exactly when the fan will come on without even looking at the temps (2 mins 20 secs then temps go back to 19c then cycle begins again)
Sorry to hear your fan is playing up, hope you are able to get a fix for it...incedentally after the clean my fan appears to be running very quiet and efficiently. Just a lot more than i would like :-0) Thanks so much for your input it is greatly appreciated -
CoreTemp and HWmonitor are the other two I can think of. Best of luck!
