So I removed a broken lcd and installed a new 1366*768 replacement, same resolution as the original. I had put the laptop into hibernation before replacement, turned the laptop on, and got a rainbow screen. After a short while, the laptop came out of hibernation and the screen came good and everything worked great. I used the laptop for a few days without cycling power. Then I restarted the laptop to complete the installation of Windows Upgrades. Now the laptop boots to a rainbow screen and I can see the rainbow patterns changing as the OS boots (Windows 7), but it never clears up. Took the laptop apart and reseated the lcd cables, no change.
Any ideas what could be wrong? Is there a magic new screen setup step I missed?

Maybe its the graphics card? When my nvidia 8600m gt reaches 90+ celcius I start to see rainbow sparks and triangle lines.

Rainbows are not big deal, you should get scared only if you will start seeing unicorns.
But seriously, make sure to check all the display connectors. Is there any chance that opening and closing the lid after the installation got any of them loose?
Aspire 6930-6235 new LCD, worked, then rainbows?
