Since a couple of days ago my laptop has been shutting down randomly, ranging from right after the Acer screen to hours into use.

I've noticed that when plugged in with the battery, the power light and the battery light will flash on and off. Sometimes the screen will go darker then brighter; I've set the screen darker when not plugged in. Which leads to the fact that the battery icon on the screen constantly goes from "Plugged in" to "Not plugged in". My battery will be dead even if I am plugged in for a few hours. I noticed that taking the battery out will cause my laptop to shutdown minutes after.

I cannot help but suspect something is wrong with my battery, as I have been using it today without putting in the battery for 3 or so hours, and then trying to put the battery in to see if anything changes, and the above problems came up. After taking it out, it shuts down and now it won't go as far as the Acer screen.

If indeed it is the battery that is causing this, do I send it back to Acer? Are there retail stores that would sell or even fix batteries? I live in Canada if that matters.

Thank you, please post any questions and I will try to answer them regarding my laptop and/or problem.

I'm guessing if no one replies after this, I should contact a retailer.

Yes it sounds very much like a battery issue to me, the only real way to find out is to buy a replacment from your retailer or maybe ebay or somewhere online

send an email to acer if it's still under warranty
they should be able to give you a replacement if they believe its faulty
