    Hi there,
I have a refurbished aspire 6930G, fairly new, and for some reason it will not play my GTA IV disc. The drive just makes a whirring noise as it tries to autoplay and nothing happens. I've tried the disc in other machines and it works fine, and my computer has no trouble playing other CDs, DVDs etc. It's just that particular one. Does anybody have any idea why that might be, and what I could do to fix it?

I'm running vista home premium and I have service pack 2.

    Thanks

GTA IV is pretty big, is it DVD DL?

There is no drive out today that would play DVDs but not DVD DLs.
Have you tried disabling autoplay, browsing to the DVD and clicking setup?

Agreed but dying drives tend to have problems like that. I have one that reeds/writes DVDs (most of them) but doesn't even recognize CDs.
That's why I asked- if GTA IV is DL that check if other DL launch on this drive.

Hi, I had the exact same problem. The reason that this is happening is that for some reason SecuROM sometimes plays up. To fix it you must re-install the game or go to program files and then your GTA IV directory and right click on "LaunchGTAIV" and click "Run as administrator".

I tried disabling autoplay, but it didn't help. Seems just not to be seeing the disc. It's on a DVD rather than a CD. Don't know what you mean by DVD DL.

Don't know about SecuROM, haven't even got as far as installing the game yet...

DVD DL = dual-layer DVD = more data on it.

Will try and lay my hands on another DVD DL and see if that one works...

If it turns out that no DVD DLs will play, is my DVD drive just broken? Any advice on fixing it?

Thanks for all the prompt responses btw.

Check in device manager. It's highly unlikely that drive doesn't work with DVD DL by default. More likely it's just dying on you.
Have you tested it with other DL media?

Did a quick Google, and came up with this.
Make a System Restore point just in case, then give it a whirl.

Hard to find anything about that particular model but this series supports DL for sure. Check if it reads other DVD DL- as I said it may be dying on you and not read DL any more.

I had the same problem but with different DVD disk (Call of duty, I think).
What I suggest is to ship the laptop to Acer, I did it and DVD drive was replaced. No issue now.
