Hi!
Are Acer laptops one's that I could rely on for 3-4 years to come?
I've been planning on buying a new laptop this month or at the beginning of December. I was considering Dell's new XPS, when they come out, but so far no luck on that front. The Acer Aspire 6935 has caught my eye, but it seems dangerously cheap for the specs. (T9400 CPU, 9600GT GPU, Blu Ray, FullHD screen etc - and that for only 1299.- euros).
If users who have the 6935 could post their opinions (I realise that it won't be after a year or so of usage, but still) and maybe some benchmarks, or gaming results?
So all in all - is the quality up for it, is it up for 3-4 years, with out me going to the warranty service every now and then after a year or so?

i was seriously considering this model or the 18 inch version because after i got spoiled with the wuxga screen on my inspiron 8600 i just couldnt bear to get a lower res screen, and it limited my options quite a bit.
the other units i was considering were the dell precision m4400, vostro 1710, and asus g50.
the 6935 is very good value for money! but just like you i had doubts of its build quality after handling it in the store. the comments on the forum seem quite positive however...
anyway just thought it might be helpful if i noted down which alternatives i was considering at the time
oh, and one more thing, you cant generalise the quality over the whole brand. some brands have great quality but just one or two models have issues... and some brands have crap quality but ther is still one or two models that are great.. -
Cool man, thanks!
I've also looked at M4400, but it's almost double the price!
Still comments from current users are welcome! -
check out the as6920 owners lounge, if im not mistaken its the same chassis. can probably get a good idea of the issues with the model.
yea the m4400 cost me about 2000usd, but i upgrade every 5 years and am somewhat of a road warrior. consumer grade stuff falls apart on me pretty quickly -
thanks, will do.
And also, does Acer have international warranty?
I'm planning on ordering it from Germany, but I live in a smaller EU country - Estonia. Is the warrant valid outside Germany if I buy it from there? -
-
Still waiting on some comments from owners of the 6935. I'm mostly concerned about the keyboard... -
-
if you want a laptop to last 4 years, you need to look at business class laptops. consumer grade ones are designed to last about 3 years. so by the middle of your second year they are gonna show signs of wear.
im very disappointed that acer's business class offerings, the travelmates, are no where near as good as even the budget offerings from other manufacturers like the ideabooks or vostro's.
read the HP 8530 review: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4631
it will give you an idea of what kind of spec business grade notebooks are built to, vs consumer grade ones
having said that, if you dont move your laptop much (i.e use it as a desktop replacement) and use an external keyboard and mouse, you can expect a consumer grade laptop to last 4-5 years as well. -
apparently, the build quality of this model is alright. i know some owners of this new model who hav said that temperatures go up to 70 deg celcius when stress tested, which isnt half bad.
acer seems to put more effort into their higher end laptops -
Thanks.
I've looked at some business grade notebooks - I've considered T500, new Latitude E's and Precision's. Latitude E's don't have enough GPU power for my needs, T500 is so far the best option, I think. But the price and even better specs than the T500 got me thinking. For some reason I'm not too fond of HP's....
I'm still kinda hoping for a Dell XPS update before the second half of December... If not, then I'll take a very critical look at my options.
And also, I'm mostly gonna use the laptop plugged in and on the desk. At work, at home etc. so the notebook should last a little longer, compared to a person who would take it everywhere. Then again I use it quite often, and it's turned on for long periods of time.... -
im not sure when dell will release their xps updates. should be soon though. a lot of their product line is looking somewhat aged now. T500 gets my vote. its a pretty good machine for the money.
the reason i said used with an external keyboard and mouse is that the finish tends to come off, the mouse button tends to get "soggy" (no more click, feels odd) and the keyboard gets worn out, especially if you play games that may make you....well...a bit enthusiastic...
so even if you do not move it around much these things may wear faster than on a business grade notebook. -
Yeah, the Dell line is now the only line that is outdated, and it's kinda pissing me off, that they're waiting so much.
To be fair, I don't have experience with a very good quality laptop, since my first and only notebook, wich is the one I'm typing on, is a Toshiba Satellite M100, wich is quite aged. I bought it a little over a year and a half ago. It's been holding up fairly well, been to the warranty service twice.
Some of my friends (and both of my parents) have thinkpads, wich feel extremely solid, also the latest XPS systems feel very nice also.
Thankfully I have til the first half of December and then I can't hold off anymore and need a new notebook. I sincerely hope that Dell gets their act together and release those XPS's on time.
But a question to some of the new GemStone Acer owners:
How is the quality compared to other, more well-known consumer laptops like Dell, Sony, Toshiba , HP (wich has to be crappier then Acer, cause as far as I've heard from my friends, the Pavilions suck big time)? -
My first Notebook was a Toshiba and got many problems with. It was an entry model (Celeron CPU), during the first year, it has been sent many times to the customer services, at 1 year and 2 months after (warranty wasn't effective anymore) I had to change the light for the screen, 2 months after, the mainboard died... I think my notebook spent around 3 to 4 months at the customer services...

Oh well....
My Acer 5684LMi has served me well.
When I purchased it there was nothing around to touch Acer in terms of "bang for buck".
I never even knew NBR existed in those days.
In spite of what I have learn't on NBR , if I had to do it all over again I would still choose this lapppie I am typing on right now. Namely my Acer 5684WLMi.
It has just been such an absolute pleasure to own and use.
And to work on. Even after almost two years of solid use...
Cheers,
Theo -
Ok.
Thanks to all for the feedback. I'll check out some reviews and try to make a hard decision of buying a 15.4-16.4 inch laptop.
Cheers guys! -
whats the 3Dmark06 for this laptop?
-
In some review's that I found (via. notebookcheck.net, wich were german reviews, but google translate does miracles
)there the 3DMark06 score something with 5000. Like between 5200-5600 or something similar - anyway, a very nice score...
-
Not easy to find 3DMARK06 but I got it. I never really use this software
The Score at native resolution 1366x768 is 5690
The Score at resolution 1024x768 is 6390
With Cinebench, my score is 5472. Quite low comparing my desktop(~13000)

er, actually, 3Dmark06 is recognised universally at the resolution of 1280X1040 i think. what watever, 5000+ is a nice number, thanks so much for replies
i went to check this notebook today, it feels pretty solid, tested the screen, keyboard and chasis. pretty sturdy in my opinion. dunno how durable though.and one thing to note is there is heat ventilation at the bottom left corner of the LCD screen, might affect the screen
actually, hp is a pretty renowned brand for its build quality and service. i duno how your friends got the impression. in fact, it is acer which has more issue with build quality.hopefully, the new gemstone series might be able to resolve that.
dell has pretty good build quality as well.based on my personal exprience(my dad has used it for almost 2 years, totaly no breakdowns at all). but thats becuz he only surfs the net on it lol
acer is basically bang for your buck -
Ahh, my 8930 wont score above 5600 with a 9700M GT.
I've even overclocked.
.... -
wow, you should be getting around 6200+
did you run this test on the highest 1900X1080 res? or are your drivers optimised? -
8930 must use 1920x1080, so it maybe why the score is low.
-
yeah ,well, run it at 1280X1024 and see the new score.
how is your 6935G holding up darika? i heard dust gets stuck in the speakers very easily and its impossible to clean out -

I just bought this Acer 6935g and I cant move the touch controls which light up. I tried to do a lot to move the media controls on the left which light up but I can t operate them. If I try to increase/decrease volume via the volume icon, then I can see the light on the media control increasing/decreasing but I am not able to use it via touch. I even tried using the hold button on the media controls but in vain. Any help would be appreciated.

Unplug the mains and battery, wait a couple of seconds and put the battery in and mains then start her up, that should have reset the touch panel.
My config runs very cool =)
When I ran the t9600 I got just over 6000 in 3dmark 06. -
totally agree, higher-res ftw
Aspire 6935 build quality
