    Hi ..

i am very new to here so please dont flame me if this is a retarded question....

i have done a search but cant find exactly the answer i need..

    my Acer aspire is a 7720 T7300
    it came with 2gb of ddr2 ram ( 2 banks of 1gb)

    i recently upgraded to 4gb

the pc knows it is there but only appears to recognise 3gb?
is this a vista os ram limit issue or is there anything i can do to get the laptop to recognise all 4gb's?

system info screenshot included to provide info

    many thanks

Probably the reason would be that you are running a 32 bit operating system. It may see all 4gb, but it can only address between 3 - 3.5gb unfortunatley.

i had a feeling you may say that...

shame as lots of memory upgrade sites state it can max at 4gb...hence why i went to 4gb...

The motherboard will support this, hence the memory upgrade sites saying 4gb. What they don't know is what operating sytem you are running, and this could be different for each Laptop.

It will run just the same as it is addressing 3gb. I think if it were me i'd leave it, may come in handy in the future.

Herts aswell, nice, don't see to many people from our part of the world around here :D

the difference is minimal so leave the 4gb in the laptop.

That way, if you want to upgrade to a 64-bit operating system, you can use all 4GB right away.
Look up the 64-bit guide here on NBR!

No, but then again I'm still on 32-bit. :3
The supposed benefits are more RAM available to be used and that programs coded for 64-bit will run faster - but the downside is that you'll need to find 64-bit drivers for ALL of your hardware.
Since your machine is relatively recent, shouldn't be a problem.

    Hi
I would recommend updating vista to sp1. In my case when I did that system was recognizing full 4gb memory. (vista x86 BTW)
    Cheers

Boruta, it may recognize that you have 4GB installed, but it can't utilize all of it. There is no way to get around this limit of the 32-bit architecture.
