right click the volume control icon (speaker in taskbar) click ADJUST AUDIO PROPERTIES...

then go thru the tabs testing all settings... under AUDIO,,, in SOUND RECORDING,, click VOLUME, RAISE VOLUME to MAX and make sure SELECT IS CHECKED... then check ADVANCED and uncheck MIC BOOT..

    if that doesn't solve it..

    do this...

double click the speaker icon in the system tray...
click OPTIONS.,, click MIXER DEVICE down arrow.... and click (realtek) AUDIO INPUT....
then cick adjust volume for RECORDING,,, and then click MIC VOLUME and STERO MIX...

now the mic HAS TO WORK!

i have a similar problem. i have a 5920 and have just put xp on it. my mic input (at the front, pink jack input) does not work but the two mics above the screen do. i'd like to turn them off and just use the the plugin jack one. when i put my headphones in it asks what it was i put in (ie headphones), but it doesnt say anything when i put the mic in.

    edit:
after checking the realtek site for drivers i found some updated only last week. installed and now it works (when i plug my mic in it recognizes it and i can use my external mic). perfect timing of those drivers being posted.
