I have a one week old 17" Aspire 7720-6708. Has the Centrino Core 2 Duo T5250. Actually came with 3GB RAM and Vista Home Premium. Has the Intel 965 Express chipset and X3100 Intel graphics using up to 380MB system RAM.

I have my Logitech cordless LX7 mouse (had on my old 17"HP laptop). Running on Windows drivers, like I always choose to use, rather than install Logitech drivers. (I've encountered more trouble over the years installing the "right" drivers). I never have issues with my other systems and mice.

I have made no real changes from factory, Just setup screen saver, etc, like that.
And I am just using it a while before starting to uninstall the bloat ware etc. That way I don't get a load of trouble from removing stuff and trying to figure it out.

    So far its run great.

But once in a while, whilst still on AC power, it will be in standby and the monitor will have gone off, maybe 20 minutes since I last used it, not in Sleep or hibernating yet. Just in standby with the monitor gone off. Well I will sit down and move the mouse to use the laptop and the screen will come back for a split second and then go instantly blank, black. The laptops still running, fans and lights normal. I can't get anything on screen, not even CTRL-ALT-DEL. Just remains totally black, dark, not on.

I have to hold the power button to turn it off, loosing any pages or programs I had open.

I use the User logon and password screen, not that I expect that to cause trouble.

Windows Update is all updated. I even downloaded the latest Intel graphics driver from Intel, no help.

Its only once in a while as I come and go and use the laptop every evening as I do other chores around here.

I have no idea what it could be.

I have Vista Home Premium on my desktop computer for 12 months and no issues like this - I was about to say maybe its a Vista issue with the laptop?

I build my own desktop PCs, so I know those inside out. The laptops got me stumped.

I should add I look in Event viewer and nothing shows up under any catagories. The last event will be perhaps an hour before, then the next events is the start up successfully events after I have to shut it down.

This laptop runs great and surprisingly fast considering I have not turned down any performance features in Vista and Aero is on. The 3GB RAM must help.

What should I even start to look for.

    Thanks.

I believe this is a known Vista bug that is not yet fixed (unless SP1 will fix it). What happens is the Vista event service doesn't properly register the resume from standby event and so it never wakes the screen.

One fix is to enable 'Hybrid' sleep mode.

Another, depending on the video chipset, is to check and see if there is an 'Intel External Event Utility Service' or something similar. For ATI chipsets, it is "ATI External Event Utility Service". Not sure what it is for Nvidia chipsets. Set this service to 'manual', click apply, then reboot.

Not sure if this will fix your issue, but give it a try.

It might be worthwhile to install the latest INTEL drivers for the X3100 embedded video, I was having issues with my Acer Extensa 5620-6830 laptop until I installed them.

    Windows XP Pro (32 bit):

    Windows Vista Home (32 bit):

If either of you is running 64 bit Vista or XP, use these instead.

    Windows XP Pro x64:

    Hey;

I have the same laptop - aspire 7720

The issue was bios related - reset your bios and then the video issue works. I spent a few days looking through event viewer and stuff -

The screen isn't "off" - if you shine a flashlight into the screen, you can see the text on the screen - the video card is still working correctly. The issue is the backlight not turning back on..

Anyway... To fix this: (I run server 2008, not vista, but I assume its the same issue :)

    Install your video drivers,

    Shutdown the system

Remove the power cable and the battery

Hold the power button down for 45 seconds (its officially 20, but I know 45 or more works)

Plug everythign back in and your good to go.

As Asdlkf said: The screen is still on. Its the backlight thats still OFF.
To remedy this, simply press 'Fn'+'F6', the next time this happens, then you will be able to see your screen again. I have the same model laptop, and this happens to me all the time. If my soloution works for you, then you can simply add to my rep power.

I seem to be having the same black screen on wake from sleep mode. Can anyone else confirm the fix quoted above me fixes it? Do you have to install new vid drivers or can you just remove the battery and hold the power button?

I did not reset my bios but I fixed the problem by shutting off the screen saver.
