To my knowledge, Acer does not use any 'Advanced BIOS' key combinations to display more sophisticated and detailed BIOS settings and allow them to be changed (like some of the overclockable ASUS, DFI, Abit, etc desktop motherboards).

Having said that, almost any BIOS is 'moddable' by hacking the BIOS to reveal hidden settings and unlock hidden values. However, this is very complicated and definitely not a task for beginners, especially on laptops. One bad hex edit or change, and you've got a dead laptop that needs a new BIOS or sent back to the manufacturer - unlike a desktop which has other options (like dual BIOS, replaceable chip, hot flash, etc).

A good forum for information on BIOS modding is here:

Whell, i heard some of the older models had "Alt-F4" like combination to enter advanced settings. Usualy, i would´nt try changing anything in it. But i have this sound stuttering issue. It is not solvable from inside windows, i tryed every single thing... still got the problem. I guess shutting my HD audio modem should do the trick, ´couse i dont need it anyhow.
If nothing, it´s worth a try so... i´ll study your page, thx.

    Hi Van Capri

I have your SAME problem (stuttering sound and general slowdown for instants). I´ve tried everything and still no solution at all, also shutting the modem, and nothing. I have updated BIOS from 1.19 to every version till 1.29a, and nothing. Yerterday a new version has been released (1.31), it state to solve "BOBO" sound when playing music (don´t know what "bobo" means). Tomorrow I´ll try it.

Let me know if you find the solution, the same goes for my. Excuse my English

    Kind Regards

Yep, elbubi if you can get your money back do it... i tryed updating to 1.31, it doesent help, even when "improved bobo sound" there is (what ever the heck that means)...
So all the latest drivers, bios etc. still no help.
I had an issue with svchost.exe on xp, it was sucking a bit of my cpu usage so it kinda stoped the sound issue :)... nevertheless i now use vista ultimate.
Curious, i still havent heard that anyone with orig. vista home premium that came with the laptop has the issue?!?

    Regards

    Hi Van.

Tought you were using Xp as me, never heard of someone having this problem using Vista. When I was using the original preinstaled version, this problem did not exist, it started with Xp.

I allways do "Dos Flash" for updating BIOS, it gives more "security".

    Have you tried this solution???:

"Go to the HARDWARE part under the SYSTEM options (Control Panel). Under the IDE Controllers part there must be a PRIMARY IDE and the INTEL one. Right click and select UNINSTALL on the IDE one. Reboot"

Let me know if that works or your new BIOS flashing :)

PD: Dear Acer SAT, what the f*** does "BOBO" mean?!?!?!?  :p

I´ve done that now, deleted two ide channels... now i have two ata channels :). Not sure how that helps, the issue is still not noticable, i´ll have to try some movies and music out to let you know if that fixed it.

How do you do dos bios flash anyhow? I tryed burning the thing on cd but it aint a bootable cd so i can´t boot from it.

P.s. as a member of "www.acer-userforum.de" the german acer community i know there are loads of people having the issue on any other OS but Acer´s.
Windows XP, Home Premium, Ultimate, you name it.

Maybe "improved BOBO sound while playing music" should be some kind of a joke or whatever :D

    Hi again Van :)

Hope that fix you´re problem, please let me know how it goes ;)

For doing DOS flash I use Nero Burning Rom, select the "Boot Cd/Dvd" option and after I add the files for flashing (obviosuly unziped). Then boot from cd/dvd, and execute "bat" for flashing.

One little doubt, you have "only" sound problems, or like mi it´s more a "general" slowdown problem which also afects sound playing?

    No comments about "BOBO"... :p

Btw: Do you know if is there any specific driver for the CrystalBrite LCD screen? Or do I have to stay with the default PnP driver?

    Hi elbubi,

I´ve done dos bios flash, just like you suggested with ner CD-Rom (Boot) and flashed the bios from v1.31 to v1.31 :)...
After deleting the two present IDE channels i got two ATA channels instead, but still am experiencing sound probs.
Im not sure how my overall performance effected is but still sometimes when sound popps there is some overall stuttering to see, that is why it is so annoying :(

    Any new ideas maybe? ;)

God... I really don´t know what else to do to solve this f****** problem...

All I kwow is it´s driving me CRAZY  , and ANGRY

For what you tell me, it will not be gone by returning to Vista, well, that is kind of "hope devastating" :p . You told me you were member of Acer´s German Community, no new ideas there??? :(

¿¿¿Where the hell is Acer for helping their customers???

I´ll keep trying and trying to discover what the problem is. Any new finding, we´ll post them here ;)

    We´ll Keep In Touch ;) . Kind Regards :)

I´ll try it now... interesting thing is, when i was on xp pro, i installed this thermal analysis tool from intel. There you can monitor your temps etc., the prog has also some option to start a workload on a cpu to see how high those temps go. If you start the workload, the sound prob. dissapears. as soon as you stop it, the prob. comes back.

I would recommend if you have a recovery dvd from your original OS to use it, i think that would resolve the issue... I am not that lucky ´couse i did´nt make one :(

I´ll report back as soon as i try this "microcode reliability" stuff.

P.S. Acer UserForum.de, they just install the empowering technology with performance settings set all to max, that minimizes the issue and they are happy with it. I´m not, dont like empowering tools, and want my laptop to work at it´s full potential.

    Hi Van :)

First of all, excuse my "silence", I was absent this whole weekend.

I also "hate" Empowering, so Acer´s UserForum.de´s solution doesn´t apply for me neither. It´s almost "insane" having to depend on that to be able to fully squeeze your machine´s potencial

Luckily I have done Recovery Dvd, but I still refuse returning to Vista  . Besides, as I bought my Acer in Italy, it came with only the italian language available. Despite understanding that idiom, I want to have an OS running my language (Spanish), and I want it to be XP :p

No good results with the "microcode reliability" update?

Btw: Do you know if there's any "specific" driver for CrystalBrite LCD Screen?. I have the doubt if using "Generic PnP display" really "exploits" the benefits of that panel

    Once again, kindest regards :)

    Hi guys.

Ive noticed you all have audio issues on ur laptops.
Ive also had the same problem with my 7720g.

The newest Bios V1.34 has sorted the audio issue on mine finally.
apparently, Acer is aware of the problem. Its something to do the actual mainboard and how the bios handles all the various processes and interupts.

Flash the bios using a bootable disc using the latest bios version V1.34.

The only downside is that the fans spin up more often. But this can only be a good thing, faster fans = better cooling.

    Hope this helps. :D

I´m still waiting for v1.35 to solve this issue, but no news so far...

In my humble opinion, this have 2 downsides:

    1. Faster Fans would probably mean more heating (hence more cooling needed)
    2. Faster Fans would DEFINITELY mean less battery stamina.

I don´t want to downgrade to v1.33 cause I prefer this to sound problems, but this is still no heaven :p

    Kind Regards :)

PD: Now with sound problems solved, I can finally enjoy and stop hating mi Acer :D
