I have a 5 day old Aspire 7741G laptop that 1 USB port went out on in the middle of the night sometime. I had a Western Digital external drive plugged in the port last night and when I woke up in the middle of the night the drive had disappeared and now anything I plug in won't show up. The plug is still providing power to devices but they are not showing up in Windows when plugged in. I'm running Win 7 64 bit Home Premium. Any ideas?

I did Google a bit but haven't had too much time yet to troubleshoot. I tried upgrading to the latest BIOS and un-installing the USB devices in Device Manager and letting them re-install but that one port still doesn't show up. If the port managed to get fried somehow just sitting idle would it still power devices?

I think the data lines on the controller chip is dead. New motherboard/USB extension board (depending where it lives).

I've Googled and found mention of it happening with other Acer laptops but never a definitive answer. Is there any chance it could be a driver or software conflict?

my first Aspire 7741G had a broken USB Port on the left side right beneath the HDMI port

mine never worked, but possibly you are "lucky" enough to still got working USB power, but broken data pins

as i just tested, the left USB Controller seems to be separate to this USB port, a plugged in mouse is shown as only device in the device manager, on the right USB port seems to hang the web cam too, i think, as there is another USB device, or the card reader, maybe

but a partial problem with resume / suspend seems a bit silly too me, think it is hardware malfunction
