Hi there all, I may come across at points as a noob which tbh is the case.

I have a Aspire 8920 and I run World of Warcraft and I had terrible problems with low fps, when I check my cpu monitor thing in windows side bar when the low fps happens I see that its maxed at 100% so I had sent my machine back to Acer to be repaired and they have aparently replaced the graphix card.

I have the machine back now and Im still having major issues trying to run WoW, the only way I get a steadyish frame rate is if I have to have all settings down to min which obviously makes the game play a little naff. With any increase in setting raiding is an inpossibility, its just unplayable.

Is this machine of capable spec to be able to run it effienciently or should I get a big hammer and smash it to bits? or is there more of a underlying problem that acer may not of picked up on at the time? or is there something that I can do to enhance it performance.

My partner plays SIMS3 and even with that installed on here its really jumpy.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appriciated and feel free to ask me anything to help you in err helping me )

    Many Thanks )

    Hi maxwild, welcome aboard.
Can you give us full specs of the laptop? Make a list and try to find these Processor, Video card, RAM, Hard Drive, Windows OS (Service Pack), Resolution of the screen. To find them follow the route: Windows Orb > Search box type 'Performance information and tools' (without the '') > Press enter on the program > A window will pop up, middle of the windows press 'view and print details' > write them down somewhere and let us know.

Don't tell me that you play at high resolution. :D
Your card is very similar to mine. By overclocking my card, I can play maximum settings with no AA and low shadows at 1366x768 and my CPU is higher than yours. I would suggest you to lower the resolution settings. Very few cards can handle full HD (1920x1080), especially with high graphic settings and they are very expensive.
So what kind of settings are you using for the game? and what sort of frames per second are you getting (Ctrl + R will display the fps on the screen as you play)?
Also try to update the video drivers from Nvidia, that might help.
It must be very good to watch full HD videos though, right?

I have been playing in 1920x1080 wide but have just tried lower to what you use but will be unable to tell properly untill I get into a raid. Within Dalaran that gives me a not very steady 15 fps but it isnt even at its busiest time and if t was it would be a unplayable 4fps. Now Im using your res Im still getting only 15 fps in Dal.

Its strange coz I have had all setting to min but I kept max res and I seamed to get exacty the same results.

Other settings currently are: View Distance High, Enviro detail 50%, Tex res High, Terrain building low, Ground clutter density 25%, Textrure filtering 25%, particale density 50%, Ground clutter radius low, weather intensity low, shadow quality and player textures both low and all 4 check boxes are checked and I dont play in windowed mode.

If you were getting 15 fps in Dalaran before at Full HD and now that you lowered the resolution you still get 15 fps that means is the CPU that has the problem and not the graphic card. Generally if you change the graphic settings and you don't see any progress then the problem (low fps) is CPU dependent. There is a thread here about CPU throttling observed in your laptop as well or here. The CPU problem started here, just for you to know. Another member reported a similar problem to you here, so you might find a solution there.

Before you go there though, in the video options don't check the ''reduce input lag'', this option needs a really fast CPU, I think, and leave the V-sync out.
Also check the power option in Vista is in high performance and not in balance or power saver.

Can I just give you HUGE thank you nlkive you star! the problem I had with the fps dropping making the game unplayable has been resolved by using RMClock and the low fps I was getting generally not including the huge drop is probably going to be managed by just changing a few settings.

The hours of tearing my hair out over this issue and the weeks of waiting to have my laptop returned seams worth it. I raidied last night without having switch to the PC or even having to relog.

    So thanks again :)

I am glad that I could help maxwild. You can always overclock if you like in the end by using Nvidia's System Tools. You don't have to overclock much but it might even more helpful.
If you have any problem again, there are many peoplle that can help you or you might help other people as well. Remember our forum is not only for solving problems but also for tweaking, mobbing, sharing opinions, making our laptop more enjoyable overall.

well that seams to be short lived, is seams to be throttling meh all the time now, can't even watch a film without it becoming unwatchable  think I should go back to the big hammer and smash it to bits idea :(
