OK, I just re-installed Vista it only asked for a Modem driver (which updated successfully) and a driver for a "Mass Storage Controller" to which I can't find. I downloaded all the Drivers on the Acer site for the Apsire 9420 and used that disc, without luck.
If this is for the 5 in 1 card reader that was built into they system, wouldn't the drivers all ready be on the disc that I downloaded from Acer?
I do connect an external HD to my laptop, I tried the drivers that came with that, and no luck. I don't know what this Mass Storage Controller is, or how to update it's drivers, anyone else know?

the microsoft tech centre said you must obtain the drivers from your board manufacturer.
sorry but the lads are working on it for you.

That's it... I'm installing XP.
Now.. I just have to find a way to format this thing. Last program I tried booting from CD/DVD did not open on my laptop, it's as if Vista was blocking it cause it knew there was a chance I wanted to format and go back to XP.
Any hints as to how to format my C: and go back to XP?
Vista locks my C: from being formatted. -
in my brothers pc we just used a windows xp disc.but i have the feeling with a laptop and the D2D recovery partion.sounds like trouble. -
to try and boot off the XP CD, change the boot order in the BIOS
also, that is almost def the 5-1 card reader you need the driver for, but even if you install XP you'll probably need to get the driver - i did for my 3680
ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_9420/vista/Drivers for vista or ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_9420/driver for XP -
change boot order first.
if your going over to XP. stay away from anything with the words vista on it -
Try install intel chipset driver first. The driver on Acer site was old version.

I know this is an old issue, but I came across this thread while I was experiencing the same problem.
I fixed this one, it turns out the 'mass storage controller' refers to the 5 in 1 card reader on the laptop. You can pick up drivers for XP and Vista here:
