OK, I just re-installed Vista it only asked for a Modem driver (which updated successfully) and a driver for a "Mass Storage Controller" to which I can't find. I downloaded all the Drivers on the Acer site for the Apsire 9420 and used that disc, without luck.

If this is for the 5 in 1 card reader that was built into they system, wouldn't the drivers all ready be on the disc that I downloaded from Acer?

I do connect an external HD to my laptop, I tried the drivers that came with that, and no luck. I don't know what this Mass Storage Controller is, or how to update it's drivers, anyone else know?

That's it... I'm installing XP.

Now.. I just have to find a way to format this thing. Last program I tried booting from CD/DVD did not open on my laptop, it's as if Vista was blocking it cause it knew there was a chance I wanted to format and go back to XP.

Any hints as to how to format my C: and go back to XP?

Vista locks my C: from being formatted.

I know this is an old issue, but I came across this thread while I was experiencing the same problem.

I fixed this one, it turns out the 'mass storage controller' refers to the 5 in 1 card reader on the laptop. You can pick up drivers for XP and Vista here:
