In the run up to Computex Taipei, Acer head office just officially announced the Aspire 9510, with 17" LCD (dual lamps), GeForce Go 7900 512MB, Centrino Duo, dual 120GB HDDs, and up to 4GB RAM:

    Ummm... "cough" MeroM "cough"....
Whatever happened to that? How come still the Yonah?

This Aspire 9510 will cause havoc in Dell (1710). I trust Acer will stick to their usual low prices on this one as well...

All of these are Core Duo. So far the only new AMD notebooks that Acer has announced for Computex are the Ferrari 1000 and Ferrari 5000 described in another thread.

The Ferrari notebooks announced separately are rumored to ship from June 27th. Not sure on these Aspires, but I'm guessing within the next 6 weeks would seem reasonable for first shipments.

If I were you, I'd write down what needs and requirements you have of a notebook, then compare the Ferrari and others, see which meets those needs best.

That'll make your decision for you.

Let's all not forget that the first shipments are almost always a bad batch. The 8204 is infamous for being poorly built for the first two months after its release, hence why i waited until it became free of issues. I am sure that things wont be much different with thie two Ferraris or the Aspire. Give it a rest, see what other people say after they buy the laptops and then decide. It is never too late but it can definately be too early in this case. You REALLY dont want to end up sending your laptop to Acer for minor repairs...

...and equally don't forget that the people who post in forums are the ones with problems or are excitedly anticipating a notebook they don't have yet - which tends to give some people the impression that "the first shipments are almost always a bad batch" when most customers are likely mostly or completely satisfied, and any remaining issues are likely fixed with firmware / driver updates.

To believe that "the first shipments are almost always a bad batch" implies that you believe companies like throwing away their money on returns / replacements (and losing good will / repeat business with customers) deliberately rather than doing a little testing.

Well... ive read a lot of forums on the net and it seems to me like there is a trend with certain laptops. Some are never free of issues. The 8204, for example, came out to be a lemon for far too many people. I see where you are coming from and i agree with you for the most part but still, one can never be too careful when investing more than twenty five hundred dollars.

I dunno, eight or ten people complaining, and only two or three of those very vocally at all, doesn't mean "lemon" to me.

I'm about to buy as soon as I see a benchmark of the Ferrari 5000 vs. the TravelMate 8204WLMi (and presuming nothing better catches my eye in the meantime) - and I'm going to be buying with confidence.

Either ZipZoomFly have gotten the specs wrong (it wouldn't be the first time a retailer did so), or Acer America have decided to cut costs a little. The press release is from Acer headquarters in Taiwan.

Above is the first picture I've seen of the 9510, courtesy of DigiTimes.com.

First thoughts: Why is the touchpad *so* far off center???

Oh, and by the way - kudos to us, Engadget.com linked to this thread! :)

The touchpad looks on-center with the spacebar. Tough to tell for sure from the photo shown, but it looks like the 9510 has a full numeric keypad on the side - which explains the off-centered-ness of the touchpad W/R/T the laptop chassis.

I'd say it'd cost around $1800,considering the fact that the Toshiba has a 7900GS for $2000.
